Short Transfer Post

By: John | August 26th, 2008

Well, after 30 appearences and 7 goals for Lyon, It looks like we finally found a buyer for the “Blank Czech,” Milan Baros. Phyeeeeew!!!! It looks like it’s official now. Lyon and Galatasaray are said to have reached a verbal agreement on Monday, and apparently Baros was in Istanbul today Tuesday, to sign the contract. The deal is said to be for 3 years and worth 5.5 mill Euros, so JMA’s made a 3 mill Euro profit. Baros’ departure really did come down to the wire. Personally, I didn’t think there’d be any takers, and it really did come close to the closing of the transfer window, which has now been pushed back by the league to midnight Sept 1.
Baros is a real hard-worker and doesn’t lack for effort, although in terms of goal-scoring, Baros has been in a real dry spell lately, and obviously a striker’s worth is measured by how many balls he puts in the back of the net. But, I have to somewhat revise my harsh criticism of the guy after analyzing his stats, especially when comparing him to his replacement in the Lyon striker pecking-order, Frederic Piquionne. When you compare the two players’ goal scoring ratios last season, it’s actually Baros who’s more efficient: By my math, Baros scored an average of 1 goal per 3.4 appearences. While Piquionne scored 1 goal per every 4.6 appearences(7 goals in 32 apps). This isn’t a defense of Baros, but more of a critique of Piquionne I guess. Did we end up getting a less efficient #3? Anyway, we really could have done a better job getting a more prolific scoring third striker.

On the acquisition front, JMA had recently hinted after the purchase of Thimothee Kolodziecziak, that Lyon might not be done for this mercato. Rumor has it that Lyon is inquiring about AC Milan’s RB, Massimo Oddo. It appears that things are just in the “fealing-out” process, but this may be the side-back that Lyon was promising. I don’t know what Oddo is worth or the probability of this taking place, but I think the acquisition of a starting right-back would be even better than than buying a back-up left back, as it would allow Anthony Reveillere to be the #2 at both RB and LB and add experience to those two positions.
Also, according to Mercato 365, Lyon are very interested in Danijel Pranjic of Eridivisie outfit Heerenveen, as Cesar Delgado is rumored to be on his way out of Gerland. Boca Juniors is said to be highly interested in Delgado’s services. Pranjic would fill in as back-up LB to Grosso and can also play all along the left side.
And alas, Alain may be back in L1! After only three weeks of L1 action, the board of Nantes is looking to sack their current coach Michel Der Zakarian. Nantes is currently winless in three games with 1 point and at the bottom of the table, tied for last place with Lille.
Despite denouncements by UNECATEF, the union that represents L1 coaches, Les Canaris’ president Waldimer Kita has admitted to having held talks with Alain Perrin. Supposedly, Perrin is said to be asking for a high degree of autonomy should he decide to take the job.

It’s official: Der Zakarian has been fired from Nantes. We’ll see Alain Perrin across the sidelines this season.

For the moment, we cannot say that we did get a less efficient #3.
Baros has better statistics, right, but I guess it’s far easier to score goals when you play for Lyon, than when you play with Monaco teammates. Ricardo played very defensive last year. Alain Perrin did not. And do not forget that Juni is magic. :)

    Adios Baros !

I would argue that it’s hardest to score goals when you’re at Lyon (in France) because almost every team you play against plays extra defensively.

Almost every ligue 1 team plays each games defensively ! :) That’s not only against Lyon.
Piquionne scored a lot when he was at St Etienne because he had great skills player around him like Feindouno and co. At Monaco, he had to defend every time. All the team searched to not concede goals. This year, Piquionne will have around him great offensive players, and great defensive players. Our team is more balanced this year than Monaco’s last year’s team. That will help our attackers to be more confident when they have to go forward.

Well I don’t think our third string striker is too important since we only play one striker. I think both Benz and Fred are top class and hopefully they will stay fit!!

We don’t need Oddo, he’s too old. We need something younger, between 24-27 years…

It’s official – Oddo is in Lyon for a medical and should be revealed later today. I will second Inara’s comments about being able to drop Reveillere to a second choice on either the right or the left. It just balances our lineup that much more really. As for Oddo’s age – who cares? Will he help us out this year? You bet!

I dont agree, Andy. I think its a good move. He has at least 2 high level seasons left in him. Oddo > Réveillère

This Oddo signing is so random. It came out of nowhere. What, is Lyon becoming the repository for unwanted Italian internationals?

Ush: I think the third striker will be very important this year, since I have a feeling that Fred might become the new Louis Saha- injury wise- so Piquionne might be #2. And I have my fingers crossed that Benzema will play most of the games.

Oddo is actually a direct replacement for Clerc, and he only came to Lyon on loan with an option to buy. My guess is that next summer we will either see Oddo going back to Milan or Revelliere finding an another club for himself. Anyway, I think this is a very good move by Lyon. No matter how old he is, Oddo is a terrific player that was pivotal in Milan’s run to the CL trophy two years ago, and only injuries and a dreadful state of the whole Milan team prevented him from repeating his 2006/07 form. If he settles well at Lyon (and he already proved how good he is at settling in his first five months for Milan), I beleive we just got ourselves a genuine go-for-the-CL kind of player!

john: To be honest I don’t know much about Piquionne. Read his stats, very unimpressive but Baros is definitely tried, tested and proven to be crocked! Very hard to get a quality striker to be third string at Lyon, so if he works hard he’ll be acceptable for now.

As for Oddo, anyone else thuper excited???haha. If Lyon don’t lose anyone between now and September I think that’s an awesome bout in the transfer market! I think our team should walk Ligue 1 and have a squad more than strong enough to challenge the best in Europe. If Keita,Delgado, Govou and Pranjic can help with a few goals along with Benz’s tally, not to mention Juni and Ederson, you’d be hard up to pick a stronger squad or starting eleven in Europe potentially!!!! Allez Lyonnais!! :)

Ush: I totaly agree that Baros is “tired” and God knows when he will score his next goal; wasn’t making a case for him over Piquionne. And you’re right: It’s impossible to get a quality, established striker to play #3 at Lyon.

Finally, Oddo will be in Lyon on Thursday. He has a financial detail to fix with Milan. That’s a shame, we lose one day, maybe he would have been ready for the derby.
That’s important because Grosso is suspended against St Etienne. We have no LB, except Kolodzieczak. But I cannot imagine him to start his pro career as a starter in the derby !
So I guess Reveillere or Boumsong will be our left back. And Gassama (or Reveillere, if Boumsong is the LB) will be our right back. So that could mean no CB on the bench, except the young Faure. What a crap !

Problems are already here… Oddo is really welcome.
Who said we have too much players ?!

I am getting really excited about the draw taking place today… Can’t wait to see who we will meet. Let’s just hope we won’t get Athletico Madrid in the 4th hat… I just want to have 1 easy team (AaB, BATE,…etc). Then Lyon will have to show they deserve to be in the last 16 against the other 2 teams.
When you look at it, Pot 3 may be easier for us than pot 4…
Worst draw possible : Lyon – Bayern – Zenit – Athletico
Best draw : Lyon – Werder Bremen – Basel – Famagusta

But anyway, whoever we meet, we have no excuse… we have to win all 6 matches.

I don’t mind Oddo on loan because if he sucks, we can always send him back. Plus that means Lyon aren’t solely responsible for his salary. I’m actually kind of glad to see an older player, our team is too young, and we could use the experience. Oddo is coming to us like Grosso did last season, we may hopefully see the same progression (though in Oddo’s case, I hope it comes a lot faster this time).

Still, I think this signing is totally out of left field. I’m surprised Oddo accepted it, I thought France was too “little” for him. He’s not going to be the starter, at least not until he proves he is better than Reveillere (which I don’t think he is).

Hmm, I’d rather meet Bayern than Villareal and I’d rather meet Zenit than Celtic to be honest.

I think Oddo played a huge part in winning Milan the 2007 Champs League and he adds experience to the team. I personally think he can offer more than Revelliere, mainly more of a winning mentality.

    Hey John,

Come on man that’s laughable. Milan Baros is terrible while Piquionne is an explosive player that wreaks all kinds of havoc even when he doesn’t score.

Well, if he does “wreak havoc” he should learn to hit crosses and become a winger. We already have another “havoc wreaker,” in Keita who can’t score, but then again, that’s not his job. A striker must score, and neither Baros nor Piquionne are particularly great at that. Now, is it easier to score at Lyon, then Monaco with better midfielders/passers/assist setups, maybe. What were the conditions of both the players in terms of standing in their team, playing time etc…Alot of factors can be thrown in to make the comparison invalid. But my point was: Is Baros all that bad, or is he having a really dry spell as of late? Does he deserve the harsh criticism he recieves? And did Lyon get a better striker in terms of goal scoring potential? The stats say we got a lesser player. Anyway, it’s a mute point. Baros was leaving because both parties wanted out, and I think that Lyon could have gotten a better 3rd option than Piquionne.

    Hey Johnny,

Thats crazy man. Did you see Baros play at Portsmouth? He was absolutely dreadful. The problem with Piquionne is that he is now almost thirty and obviously not the same player, but in his day…wow! He was immpressive. Ask the St. Ettienne fans about wreaking havoc. The guy was always a threat and very overlooked by the national side. Regardless, he is still better than Baros and he should help Lyon.
