SM Caen vs. Lyon
By: John | December 20th, 2008
Hopefully we’ll see some of this from our “bread-and-butter” offensive machine
Dec 20, 2008
Stade Malherbe Caen
3p.m.(21:00CET, 20:00GMT)
After last week’s match between Lyon and Marseille, which would have put the most avid L1 viewer to sleep, OL travel to Le Stade Malherbe Caen to take-on SM Caen. It will be a “clash” – well, maybe more like two castrated rams rubbing horns – between two squads whose current form mirror one another. But seriously, hopefully Lyon will shake-off their lethargic form, play some attacking ball and put some goals in the back of the net.
Caen is currently 11th in the table and they have the #6 ranked offense- Lyon is #7- with (23) goals scored vs. (22) scored by Lyon. Their defense is ranked 12th with (20) goals allowed. Lyon have been in stale form lately, picking up two points in their last four games. And the wolves are lining up behind OL, as PSG, Marseille, and Bordeux are all tied for second place in the table and are just three points behind Lyon.
Caen is in a similar rut as OL: They have one win in their last six matches and Lyon is winless in their last four. All this seems like a recipe for a very boring match, but I think it’s time for one, or both of these teams to break-out of their malaise. Caen’s offense is lead by the fiesty old dog and former Valenciennes striker Steve Savidan. Savidan by the way, is rumoured to be a highly sought-after target of Marseille during the upcoming winter transfer period. Caen’s second highest scorer is ex-Troyes midfielder Benjamin Nivet, who’s netted a respectable five goals this season.
History:
Suprisingly Lyon have a losing record in total games vs. Caen. In (9) games, Lyon have won only (1), drawn (2) and lost (6). Lyon haven’t won in the last three matches, with their last victory coming in a
1-0 victory in Febuary of ‘05. The last nine matches:
2007/2008 12/8/2007 SM Caen 1 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais
2004/2005 3/4/2005 SM Caen 1 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais
1996/1997 8/24/1996 SM Caen 1 – 1 Olympique Lyonnais
1994/1995 2/8/1995 SM Caen 0 – 1 Olympique Lyonnais
1993/1994 12/3/1993 SM Caen 1 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais
1992/1993 9/2/1992 SM Caen 3 – 2 Olympique Lyonnais
1991/1992 1/18/1992 SM Caen 1 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais
1990/1991 11/10/1990 SM Caen 1 – 0 Olympique Lyonnais
1989/1990 3/24/1990 SM Caen 1 – 1 Olympique Lyonnais
Injuries: The usuals, Clerc, Reveillere, Bodmer and Pjanic, but Faure, Kolo, and Hartock are also out. Most of their injuries are coming-along very well. Clerc is continuing to progress in his rehab, Bodmer has begun running and should be back during the last week of January, and Pjanic has even started to participate in light ball work sessions on the practice field with the rest of the group.
Ederson was questionable after picking-up an ankle contusion in one ankle, and a sprain in the other ankle against Marseille last week, but looks good-to-go. Grosso is out due to suspension.
With Grosso out, it looks like Kallstrom will be filling-in at LB- well, at least it’s not a CL game. Mensah looks to get the start at RB again, where he has been putting-in decent performances- much better than his play at LB. I guess this game is too important to Puel to play the youngling Gassama, who is probably going through intensive pshycological therapy after being viciously “raped” by Ribery in the last CL match. Govou will also probably not see the field after his bone-headed antics- arrested for drunk driving- last weekend after the Marseille match. It’s also good to see Yannis Tafer in the squad, hopefully as #3 behind Piquionne, with Fred being relegated to oblivion.
Le groupe: Lloris, Vercoutre – Cris, Boumsong, Mensah, Gassama – Toulalan, Källström, Makoun, Fabio Santos, Juninho – Govou, Delgado, Ederson, Keita, Mounier, Fred, Tafer, Piquionne, Benzema.
Lineup:
France Football’s got a 4-5-1.
Lloris
Mensah-Cris-Boumsong-Kallstrom
Toulalan-Makoun
Keita-Juninho-Ederson
Benzema

Even goal.com must recognize true genius:

Great article.

I read an article. They said that Lyon will buy some guy named Faubert, and, the best part, Lyon will sell Delgado. Come on. Delgado was our best player against Caen. He is har-working player. We need that kind of player. In first I didn’t love him, but when I see that he really wants to play for OL, I said to myself, he is the man who really love OL.

And I can say for myself that I love Lyon more than people who lives in Lyon and go to games at Gerland. I hope that I will next year come to Lyon’s football academy, and that I will fight for first team. That will be for 2-3 years, but I will give my life for playing just 5 minutes with Juni, Bnez, Govou and others. Kiss for Croatia. Lyon I love love love love you.

Sidney G: You probably read that goal.com article. I thought it was garbage. The writer is good, but that article wasn’t. Why would we get another offensive mid like Faubert, with an achilles inujury on top of it, right now? And he’s not a real right back either. He may have a point about Delgado, since he hasn’t been getting alot of playing time, but his salary is large, and he hasn’t made any statements about being unhappy/wanting to leave. There were some rumors about Boca Juniors being interested, but that was a while ago.

Yes John. That was goal.com article. But if we buy Faubert, we will not have space for Gourcuff. We have Toulalan, Makoun, Santos ( DMC ) Juninho, Ederson, Pjanic, Keita, Govou, Bodmer, Delgado, Kallstrom ( AMRLC). We have 11 middlefielders in all position ( defensive, attacking, left, right and centre) we don’t need Faubert. If sell one of them, ore when Juni retires, we must buy Goucuff, and our problems are over. Well if Milan will want to sell. I hope that we will see Gourcuff in Lyon’s shirt.

signing Faubert would be a joke he is a mediocre player who is crap at right back and average at right wing,do you really think a player who isnt selected by WHUFC is a good signing for a european club with stature-No. as far as midfield goes we need a left winger/left back(Bastos). And a striker id love Vucinic and of course a few defenders (Luisao,Antonini)and then we are sorted.

Ronan: I pray that we can land Gourcuff. He’s my second favorite player. The Faubert signing makes no sense, and I really hope Lyon aren’t entertaining the idea. We need a side back that can play on the left and right, like Reveillere. I also think some midfield inventory has to be unloaded. I would think it would be Kallstrom, but he hasn’t been getting enough pt to produce the kind of play that would get anyone interested. I wish there were some way to unload Keita, but I’m afraid that that massive salary will keep him at Lyon until he retires, like Govou- not that I’m complaining about Syd. And if by some miracle we did get Gourcuff, there would be a tiny exodus of midfielders, including most definately Pjanic. And I think Bastos signed an extension and decided to stay on with Lille. Those Pocognoli rumors are swirling around again too.

Well Bastos said that Puel create a good player from him, and that he want join Lyon just because Puel is coach. So we have chance for Bastos. Reason – Puel.

Merry Christmas to you too Ronan. Hopefully Santa will fill your stocking with one or more of your wishlist transfer players.

I’ve also recieved a Christmas gift from Santa, and it’s a rather good one! The channel that broadcasts German, Dutch, Belgian, Portuguese and FRENCH league has finally become available to me on cable (I think my cable operator was actually the last to have it, with the whole damn city having it before me), and as a standard part of cable operator’s offer, it’s even free. So, from next year on, I’ll finally be able to watch a Ligue 1 game on TV, something I couldn’t have done up until now, and yes, they’re broadcasting Lyon games pretty frequently! I’ve already watched Monaco – Bordeaux on delay, and it’s excellent to see French football without the blurry chinese/arabian streams!

Lyon will bring Gilardino next summer. Everyone say that we will lose Karim, but Gilardino is perfect choice to replace our best player. Gilardino is very good player, we all saw that, two game against Lyon 3 goals.

Lyon will offer 25 milion for Italian destroyer.

From a source close to Arsenal, I have discovered that Gilles Sunu will sign for Lyon this summer. He will be added to the CFA squad to contend for a left wing spot. Good news, as he is a promising player who never really got a fair shake at Arsenal.

I think Lyon should sign Kolo Toure.

WTF ? Fabio Santos is joining Monaco and being replaced by Romas Perrotta ?!
Posted from

Ummmm, are you sure your not confusing our Fabio Santos with Monaco’s Fabio Santos Romeu
cause i see where the confusion would be ( im lying )

Fabio got back from Brazil late and Puel didn’t include him in the squad while they are training in Dinard. One of the clubs he’s been linked to is Monaco and Bordeaux to an extent, but Puel doesn’t want to let him go to a rival and title chaser.

I’ll have a preview for tomorrow’s game, and I’ll also get everyone up to speed on transfers. Sorry it’s been so slow around here, but things will get back to normal.
