Squillaci Will Be Okay!!!

By: Inara | July 17th, 2007

totos.jpgThe football gods must have heard my prayers because I woke up to the wonderful news that Sebastian Squillaci’s probable ligament damage in his right foot turned out to be nothing more than excessive soreness. So instead of missing the expected 6-8 weeks, he’ll miss a week or so.

It was a scary moment for the club last week when he began limping after the game against Shimizu and had to leave Korea on crutches in order for a proper medical examination in Lyon. His injury had brought up many criticisms against Lyon’s Peace Cup participation, most notably from Cris, who was taking his new captain duties quite seriously when he accused Aulas of choosing marketing over the team’s welfare.

You would think that this good news alleviates the urgency in recruiting another central defender since neither Patrick Muller nor Sandy Paillot are able to fill Squillaci’s shoes. However, briefly inserted into one of their daily updates from Korea, the website says that Cris may have pulled a muscle in his right thigh and will be undergoing a scan tomorrow to verify the severity of the damage.

Hopefully it’s nothing more than the same soreness and cramps that a few of his teammates were suffering a few days back. Because it would be awful if both of Lyon’s main central defenders were out at the same time. Yikes.

CURRENT INJURY LIST:

Fred - broken fifth metatarsal in his left foot – Out 4-8 weeks
Juninho - pulled quadriceps in his right thigh – Out 2-3 weeks
Squillaci - inflammation of a tendon in his right foot – Out 1-2 weeks
Grosso - lumbago – NEARLY RESOLVED
Reveillere - fractured metacarpal in his right hand – NEARLY RESOLVED
Cris - pulled muscle in his right thigh – TBD

Milan Baros, Kader Keita, and Jeremy Toulalan kept to light exercise last week due to muscular stiffness and cramping but are now back to normal fitness levels. Anthony Reveillere’s hand injury still allows him to play (with his hand carefully bandaged, of course), and Fabio Grosso may take the field against River Plate.

Juninho and Fred are both recovering in Brazil right now. Juninho should be ready before the start of the season while Fred won’t be back until mid-August, possibly September. The severity and duration of Cris’s injury isn’t known.

Do you think he’s worth picking up fantasy wise? I got him and Toulalan very early last year and outside of the EPL, my Ligue 1 was the most impressive finish.

I would pick him up, if he stays healthy he does really well. Id also pick up Jimmy Briand, he will be bagging goals this year.

Brian: I can’t speak from a gaming perspective because I’ve never played a footballing video game so don’t know how it works. But from what I’ve seen on a (real) pitch, Squillaci is a very good buy. He doesn’t make late tackles, picks up one yellow card every two years, and does his job so well he often outplays Cris!

Corey: I’m surprised Lyon haven’t tried to pick up Briand, but I guess they feel that they already have Benzema as a youth star and don’t need another.
