The Milan Baros Conspiracy
By: Inara | July 28th, 2007When will the football gods lay off? It’s not even that Milan Baros goes looking for bad luck. Misfortune just finds him. Who else out there would be suspended four matches for making an innocent gesture at a player?
The latest notch on his bedpost of mishaps is being denied a rightful goal during today’s Trophée des Champions. This is the second time in two weeks where he scored a perfectly valid goal only to have it declared inadmissible (he also scored a goal against Lille that was denied). He also is always on the receiving end of fantastic opportunities and creates some great plays, but for some reason or another, is unable to actually put the ball into the net. I’m now convinced that Baros is the best non-scoring striker out there.

He tries. He really does.
Anyway, about the match. The answer to the question I asked yesterday was indeed a yes. I didn’t see the game yet, just a minute long highlight, so I just have the bare minimum for you guys (though Jo promised to come back from the game and share his impressions!).
Lyon won 2 -1, though Sochaux scored first thanks to Valter Birsa. Lyon were quick to rebound seven minutes later, thanks to Karim Benzema setting up for Sidney Govou (who had an amazing game…for once). Right before the first half ended, Kader Keita took a corner, which Benzema headed to Cris, who scored and put Lyon in the lead.
The second half was rather uneventful. The only thing of note was Fabio Grosso’s first moments in an OL jersey – he came on during the last ten minutes. There were also a lot of missed opportunities throughout the game, so that’s something else that needs to be worked out…like always.

Second First trophy of the season.
On Lyon’s official forums, Keita and Govou were voted by fans as the best two players today. They were dangerous the entire game, and with the Jeremy Toulalan – Kim Kallstrom pairing looking better than ever, and with Grosso showing some promising moves, it doesn’t look too bad for Lyon. This is the sixth Trophée des Champions that they’ve won, and each time a successful title campaign followed. I’m hoping it’s a good omen. As for Alain Perrin, so far so good. He brought home the Peace Cup trophy for the first time in three attempts, and he’s continued OL’s traditions so far.
Some observations: I’m really not liking the red numbering on the home kits. The blue color from last year stood out more. Also, from looking at the pictures, it looks like Lyon is close to regaining it’s family mentality. Grosso, Keita, Baros, Belhadj, and Mathieu Bodmer have not only slotted into the team like they’ve been there forever, but they are really enjoying themselves (I’m especially glad for Baros – when he first arrived at Lyon and was lonely, it broke my heart). And take a look at Kim Kallstrom – he does not look like an unhappy man. Phew.
In fact, the only unhappy players are Juninho, Govou, and Sylvain Wiltord, three oldies. Let’s hope they work out their problems.
Very Short Recap (I’ll find a better one when it’s posted):
Match pictures (stolen from Getty Images, so bear with the watermarks):

Second First trophy of the season.

So far it’s looking like that 18 million for Keita is paying off.

Cris Force 100.

Trophyyyyyyyyyy.

The Police Officer and his shiny new toy.

Does Kallstrom have the look of a man whose heart is at the Mestalla?

Group hug!

What ???????????? It WAS in. And everybody there knew that. I’m posting because I too feel bad for Baros. How is it possible to be that unlucky….and 2mn after the refused-goal he was alone in front of the empty nets and missed the ball….such a shame !

That WAS in, I confirm. I was just next to the goal, on the right side, and I CANNOT understand how the 2nd referee didn’t see the ball enter in. All my friends and I saw that was IN. That really is a shame for Baros, who need to score. But with what he has done today, I still BELIEVE in him (more than ever), as an EXCELLENT offensive player. He really do hard work. He just needs a little more confidence and to work in front of the goal, to score each time he has the opportunity. You, Inara, wrote exactly what I’m thinkin about him : “Baros is the best non-scoring striker out there”.
I haven’t so many things to say about the game.
The first half was very impressive, with some very goods actions for Lyonnais. One big score failure for Baros, and one for Benz, but with all the things they’ve done, I cannot blame them.
In the second half, Lyon was decided to protect the ball, and the score, so that was less interesting.
We can really see that the team is very talented, with an excellent spirit. The only lack I have noticed, was sometimes about replacement (for sure because of the 4-4-2… that will come), and about the automatism between some players, which, for the beginning of the season, worried me more than the capacities of the team to be as good as last year’s one.
But when all this very good players will find their way to play with each others… and with the very good complicities that seem to born for now… that will REALLY be something good. Believe me
Last stuff : We were more than 30 000 persones at Gerland, today. Cool for a “little” match.
And it was … so hot. Hard to play in these conditions.
That’s it

it was in, FSW report clearly showed it cross. Anyways, great win, glad to see Govou is starting to prove you wrong Inara, haha. Did i see fred in the background of the first picture???

No link, but it seems that Reyes is going to the Athletico Madrid…is it not the club which just bought Simao ???
I think Willian would be the next arrival, even if I would prefer a pure striker: indeed if OL buy Silvestre (yeah that is the other big rumor), Belhadj does not need anymore to be a pure substitute as LB, but can be the substitute of Ben Arfa…
Anyway great win, and most important great to see the team happy to be together again..maybe Reyes would have been a new Diarra problem, so let say that we are lucky

See Sam, it was in. You’re outnumbered!
Bad news if true. According to this report, Kallstrom and Valencia have agreed to personal terms, and now it’s up to the clubs to agree. I thought Kallstom was happy at Lyon, but he never came out and said that he wanted to stay, so if true, I’m depressed now.

Corey, Fred is still in Brazil. The man you can see in the background of the first picture is Fabio Grosso.

Definately in. The replays and photos are really clear. Baros also seemed to come very close to a yellow card just before this and seemed to be on last warning from the ref. It seemed like the injustice of a disallowed goal would really provoke him. Yet immediately before kick off for the second half Baros and the ref were sharing some private joke – it was good to see that he had the level of maturity to move on from the first half.
L’Equipe made Govou man of the match ( 7/10), with Kallstrom just behind at 6.5/10. Keita was only a 5/10 which seemed harsh I thought.Great to be starting the season with two cups already in the cabinet.

Corey: Fred? Who’s Fred?
Jo: Thanks for the match recap. I’m glad that so many people went to a friendly. Let’s hope that for the league matches, the stadium is packed every time. I confess I’m always jealous of Marseille’s fanbase. It’d be nice if Lyon could approach that.
Storm: I hope that Baros doesn’t get infected with the same frustration that hit Fred last year (and which he is still suffering from). Hopefully he’ll discover his scoring roots again. I refuse to believe he was a bad purchase.

Holy shit, Grosso looks so much like Fred in that picture.

Thank you Sam! He does look very similar, with the nappy hair and all, but im starting to forget who Fred is, other the the Flintstones of course. I will never forget that everyone Ged bought but Toto and Toualan was a bad buy Inara, he is terrible at buying players. Look at all the crappy buys he made at Liverpool. He is not a club coach, stick him away in the LFP office building where he cant make decisions on players. Then again Mr Perrin makes some strange buys, usually with a sprinkling a Eastern European nobodies, so pretty much Sporting Lisbons entire transfer window.

Oh, poor Milan. Has ANYTHING gone right for him in the last two years?! I heartily agree with everyone here who still believes that he is a quality player–I’m so sick of fighting off comments like “what the hell, you still like Baros? He’s a piece of shit!” Ridiculous–he’s a top-class player who’s had the worst run of bad luck in living memory. Let’s hope he breaks the curse before Euro 2008!

Sam: At least Grosso is showing up for practice. Though when they are on the pitch together, they’ll be hard to tell apart from the distance.
Corey: Paul le Guen also made some pretty bad recruitment decisions.
Houllier did preside over Kallstrom’s signing as well. And don’t forget Tiago and Fred. To his credit, Houllier never wanted Diarra. That was Aulas. Though I’m not sure how much responsibility Houllier had at Lyon. The way the club is run means the managers don’t get much say in player recruitment. More like he tells Lacombe what he needs, and Lacombe does the finding.
Mara: Amen. I’d love to see the resurrection of Super!Milan. But you’ll be happy to know that he’s been fitting into the club quite nicely. He’s made some friends (he’s particularly close to Kallstrom), as well as Cris and Patrick Muller, and he must have picked up some French because I always see him talking to someone.

Le Guen had more power over transfers the Houllier did. Lacombe is the chief scout, and the coach will recommend a position he needs covering, tell Bernard the characteristics and then Bernard finds a few players. The coach can veto them unless Bernard and Auluas are positive about the guy. Houllier made terrible signings at Pool, Le Guen id disagree. He made some okay signings, but not to many bad ones. Seeing as how he inherited a strange looking squad from Santini id say he did pretty well. His signing of Didier Digard and Gregory Bourillon just shows he can find young diamonds in the rough.

Hey Inara, youre doing a +great job with this OL blog. Keep them posts coming. The pictures are great too but I would be a little careful about posting the Getty photos too often. I used to work for them (got laid off those greedy bastards) and I know they have a strict policy for enforcing penalties to people that knowingly use their photos without permission. Its more of issue for any type of websites that are using the photos for promotional use but the editorial images could also be monitored as well, I’m not sure. Just a heads up.

Welcome Lefutur!
Thanks for the warning about the pics. Normally I try to avoid watermarked pictures in general, but there absolutely no pictures of the TdC anywhere else. Let’s hope those folks at Getty Images don’t read my blog though. *crosses fingers*

they actually have software that scours the internet looking for illegal usage. its called Picscout. like i said i dont think you’ll have a problem because your not using the photos for promotional use but i wouldn’t rely on them too heavily either. they’re like the Microsoft of the media world and are pretty ruthless.
