Marseille vs. Lyon: The One We’ve All Been Waiting For

By: John | December 13th, 2008

Ahhhh…the Good Ol’Days….
December 14, 2008
Stade de Gerland
3P.M. EST(21:00 CET, 20:00 GMT)

This Sunday, the match that most of us have penciled-in on our calenders since Hatem Ben Arfa’s defection to Marseille this summer, is finally upon us. After a dissapointing mid-week loss to Bayern in the CL, Lyon look ready to do battle with a second place OM club that looks to take the top spot from OL. Marseille currently have the first placed offense(Lyon are 6th) with (33) goals, compared to OL’s (22). OM have the 12th ranked defense in the league(Lyon is 1st), having allowed (21) goals, to OL’s (12.) A loss will see Lyon even on points at (34) with Marseille, but behind on goal differential.

The biggest brightspots in the Bayern match were the offensive flurry-for Lyon two goals is a flurry- that put Lyon back in the match with a chance to equalize after being three goals down at the half and Karim Benzema looking in top form after his injury layoff. And with the additions of Cris and Juninho- well rested after their suspensions for the Bayern match- and Benzema, who, despite what he might say to the contrary, should be pumped-up about his clash with Ben Arfa, Lyon should be well up to the task of taking-on Marseille.

Recently, both Benzema and Ben Arfa have made comments about each other and the match-up in the press. They both basically claimed that they are not friends, but claimed mutual respect for each other, but Ben Arfa went a little bit further in criticizing the players and staff at Lyon as bieng “classless” and “not willing to attempt to understand his personality.” I’ll have a complete translation of the Le Progres interview in the next post.

History:

I found it interesting that Lyon had a winning record against a club with such a long-established winning tradition as OM. Lyon have 16 wins, 16 draws and 6 losses vs. Marseilles. Lyon haven’t won against Marseille since a 2006 (2-1) win at Gerland. Last year saw Lyon lose at the Velodrome (2-1) and in the prior season saw a (1-1) draw.

Injuries: The usuals: Clerc, Reveillere, Pjanic, Bodmer, and Faure. Piquionne picked-up a knock in last week’s “Neutering” at Nantes and will be out. Both Fred and Kallstrom picked-up slight injuries against Bayern but they are ready for Sunday.

Le groupe:

Lloris,Vercoutre – Gassama, Mensah, Cris, Boumsong, Grosso, Makoun, Toulalan, Fabio Santos, Juninho, Källström, Govou, Ederson, Keita, Benzema, Fred, Delgado, Mounier, Tafer.

Lineup:

L’Equipe’s Probable Lineup:

Lloris
Mensah-Cris-Boumsong-Grosso
Toulalan-Makoun-Juninho
Gouvou-Benzema(or Fred)-Ederson(or/Benzema)

Sad and poor game for Lyon side. Puel why you pull back Ederson and put Makoun in game???? I mean Ederson is attacking middlefielder and Makoun is DEFENSIVE middlefielder DEFENSIVE DEFENSIVE. Good damn, we try to win gave by pulling back Ederson and Juni??? Come on. We are crazy. People, what will happen if we get Barca in CL? And Puel pull back Ederson and Juni, and give chance to Fred and Makoun who is DEFENSIVE type of player. We become very funny team, with lot of brilliant ideas, wich we provide during game, and not at trening. We must win next match against Caen, or we are in deep, deep, deep problems. Allez Lyonnais
Even you didn’t win I still love you, my only Lyon!!!!

Ronan, believe it or not, although Makoun is a defensive mid, he’s our third highest scorer!!! But I agree. Take Juni off? Crazy. And Fred, what a waste of oxegen. Keita would have been better. And Benz became completely invisible on the wing. And I think Delgado has to play on the left.

It’s a pity we haven’t used Delgado or Fabio Santos in this game. Delgado is a true warrior and battles hard for every ball he could take away, while poor Santos didn’t even have the chance to remind us what a beast of a player he actually is! I’m saying this about those two players, because I have a feeling we lack motivation in the last several games (with the Bayern game as a noteworthy exception) and sometimes seem lost and tired. I say we should give those players the chance: start playing Delgado regularly on the left-flank and give as much playing time as possible to Fabio Santos. It’s a long season ahead, and we should really start utilising all of our manpower.

hey this is funny, speaking of racism… from
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/dec/14/1

“£13,400: Amount Uefa fined Lyon’s Cris last week for getting deliberately booked during their game against Fiorentina.
£9,800: Amount Uefa fined Croatia during Euro 2008 after fans used Nazi salutes, white supremacist banners and ‘gross racist chants’.”

    heh.

    this is funny, from http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/dec/14/1:

“£13,400: Amount Uefa fined Lyon’s Cris last week for getting deliberately booked during their game against Fiorentina.
£9,800: Amount Uefa fined Croatia during Euro 2008 after fans used N@zi salutes, white suprem@cist banners and ‘gross racist chants’.”

heh. so i thought that was funny, then the first time i tried to post that quote, the server blocked it. so it was offended by my post, and let Ian’s through? nice.

this is funny, from guardian football’s Said & Done column:

£9,800: Amount Uefa fined Croatia during Euro 2008 after fans used salutes, white suprem@cist banners and ‘gross racist chants’.”

heh. so i thought that was funny, but what’s really funny is that i tried to post that quote 4 times. the server kept blocking it as i had to keep obscuring the abbreviation for a certain national socialist party. so it was offended by my language, and let Ian’s through? nice.

and even just now my clever phonetic substitution for said abbreviation disappeared, probably because i used the wrong brackets for it.

    (hint: it was “knotzy” salutes)

Will: That’s amazing that it allows profanity, and that it blocks certain words even though they are used only in a descriptive context. Anyway, I found your comments “awaiting moderation” this morning so I approved them.

what a frustrating game. I’m starting to lose patience with Puel’s substitutions, Govou wasnt having a good game and he pulls Ederson instead who was one of the best on the field. And pulling out Juninho made no sense either, considering Fred is not at all in form. uggh. we need to get rid of him and buy someone like Hoarau.

lefutur: I was left confused also, but Puel might have had a good reason to pull Ederson: http://www.francefootball.fr/FF/breves2008/20081215_165538_entorse-pour-ederson.html
Ederson looked to be in agony, it didn’t look like just a painful tumble.

Wait, 2,6 grams, how much is that above the legal limit? In Serbia we express the level of alcohol with percantage, with 0,05% being the legal limit. If my math is correct, and 2,6 grams is in fact 0,26% of alcohol in his blood, then he must have been extremely drunk! Haha, Aulas should really pay these players their private drivers, at first there was Baroš’s F1 trial, and now this… :)

Just for your information, the ambiance at Gerland last Sunday was incredible. Sure, that was not a so great game, but OM and OL supporters were crazy.
That was much better than the Bayern game ! That means OL / OM is beggining a new classico, and more important for the supporters than first rounds of the Champions league !

And I’m really mad about Mr Bre, the referee of the Marseille game. HE HAD TO give a second yellow to Zubar. Now Ederson, one of our best players in the moment, is injured because of him… and the game would have been totally different if Zubar (who played well) get the red he deserved.
A referee is on the pitch to PROTECT the players. That’s the priority. Stephane Bré did’nt.

Did anyone who attended the match see the banner that was supposedly displayed by OL fans, with negative/racist words aimed at Pape Diouf? Supposedly security took it down very quickly. Lyon have posted a denunciation on the website.

Yes I saw it. That was stupid and easy.
It was written “Pape Diouf, tes initiales te vont si bien”
That means something like “Pape Diouf, your initals go well with you”
    “PD” in french means “Gay”.
That’s kind of words we heard in every stadium of every country, but I guess writing it is “worse”.
That’s more a insult than an homophobic comment.

That was really stupid from the Bad gone.

    The other banners was :
Liberté pour… le coiffeur de … Santos.
    (Freedom for Santos … barber)

I have to admit that one made me laugh. I learned after the game that Santos was in Gerland.

And the third Bad Gones banner was :
    “Hatem ça la merde”
That’s difficult to traduce, there is a wordplay with Ben Arfa’s name. Something like “You like shit, huh ?”

Thanks Jo. Except for the homophobic comment, they are no big deal. They made it sound much worse on the OL web site and in the media. I thought someone made a racist comment about Diouf. That would have been shocking had it happened in Gerland.
