The “Rock of Gibralter” In Lyon.

By: John | July 22nd, 2008

My second favorite signing of the season- and I’m sure Cris’ favorite- was realized on Monday. John Mensah is officially Lyon’s new left-center back. After weeks of waiting for Sebastian Squillaci’s transfer to FC Sevilla to be finalized, Mensah is Lyonnais. The ex- Stade Rennais FC and Ghana National Team captain’s deal is reported to be 5 years and worth 8,4mill Euro.

I’ve come to realize that alot of our readers don’t read French and OL’s official site didn’t offer the press conference article in English. Add to that the fact that Google Translator turns texts into “Mandarin Chinese” instead of English, I thought I’d just offer an approximate translation of what was said by the main “players” at the signing and let you guys discuss what Mensah’s arrival means to the club in the comments section.

At Monday’s press conference, club president Jean Michel Aulas, Manager Claude Puel, and club advisor Bernard Lacombe showered Mensah with there usual words of praise for new acquisitions. I’ll go form order of least important comments i.e., Lacombe, to most important, Puel.

Bernard Lacombe offered the fewest words of the conference. He said about Mensah: “I spotted him during the CAN (African Cup of Nations) in Egypt where he performed very well. He’s a player with characteristics that resemble those of Cris.

Jean Michel Aulas lofted heavier praise on Mensah: The objective was to attain the best defense, with Cris, in the Championnat. It’s done! Michael Essien, who is also Ghanean, told us that [Mensah] is even stronger than he.”

Mensah later shared his thoughts on joining L’OL: “Signing with a big club like Lyon isn’t easy. I had offers from other clubs, but my agent convinced me to join Lyon. Playing alongside players like Cris is a big challenge. When I played against OL last season, I was impressed by the supporters and with the city.”
John also spoke about his Ghanean predecessors, Abedi Pele and Michael Essien: They were big names at Lyon, and I hope that I will accomplish more than them.”

The most interesting words of the conference were spoken by Claude Puel. Puel gave an insight into the “pecking-order” for the CBs, talked about the flexibilty of the players at the position, and of course praised John Mensah:
“He’s a real defender, physical, explosive, smart, fast, and handles his responsibilities, as he did as captain at Stade Rennais. I’m very happy to acquire him and thank the president for having granted our request.

Puel went on to talk about the chemistry of his new stable of CBs:
In central defense, with Mensah, Cris and Jean Alain Boumsong, to them I have to add Mathieu Bodmer who can happily compensate for any absences, we are done[with recruitment] for the season in this area of play. There are no “subsitutes” and no one “position holder.” They are versatile players who can play on both sides. Therefore, there is no problem with them complimenting each other. I expect that we will have many matches to play, matches that are very close, perhaps with suspensions and injuries. Three central defenders won’t be too many to be succesful throughout the season and in all competitions.”

Yikes Claude! Three should be enough? Apparently no on filled-him-in on Lyon’s CB injury curse. Five was actually the majic number last season.

I was watching the press conference, and wow, Mensah is huge. Literally and figuratively, he’s a rock.

He was looked insanely happy. So did Puel. Lacombe, not so much.

I thought the objective was to make further progress in Europe. So you got the best defense in the Championnat. So what ? You already have had the best team for 7 years you didnt need the best defense every year to win it.

your right SportBoy, but also have to realize that every move that Jean-Michel is doing is for the champions league. The thing is, he isnt going to go out and say that. He’s gonna be ” jean-michel ” about lol, he’s that cunning.

the fuckin’ “rock” is right; i’m confident (barring injury) that Mensah will make us forget Toto in a heartbeat.

Inara has posted this pic before, but I think now that the transfer is finalized, it’s worth taking another peek.

He better make us forget considering he cost two million more than what we sold Toto for.

Also, I take back what I said about Lyon not looking for another LB. Apparently Puel has reconsidered.

“Réveillère can play in that position, but that’s something I’ll have to consider in the following weeks. Fontaine is still too young to play at this level. Youth are good, but they still have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to tactics. Another LB should be considered because we have obligations at the highest levels. At Lille, youth were often a solution, but in Lyon’s case, where far superior financial resources are available, I prefer to trust in more experienced players.”

No word yet on who he’s looking at, but Jeremy Mathieu is a potential target. He wants someone good enough to give Grosso some competition.

Tomorrow is Lyon’s friendly with FK Partizan. I’ll be liveblogging the game, even though it’s a friendly because this is the first game that will feature our internationals who are finally ready to start playing again. Their website tells us exactly when and where Lyon will be staying in Belgrade (the Hyatt), so if you are a stalker and want autographs, you should head over.

Partizan will be making this a party, with prizes for the fans. They’ll also be busting out a special all black kit (which means we’re probably wearing our white).

It sounds like manager buzz talk. I watched every game of the CAN and the Ghana players that stood out were Essien and Muntari, and to a lesser extent Junior Agogo. Best defense in the league, I’m not nessacerily convinced and its far from the best in Europe if he’s thinking about the champions league. Bodmer ain’t no centre half.

Another thing that seems to be forgotten here is that effective centre back defenses is about partnership. Cris is usually the ball winner and Squillaci sweeps. Having two ball winners is not good balance. Look at some of the better defenses. Vidic ball winner, Ferdinand sweeper. Terry ball winner, Carvalho sweeper, etc….

Alright, I’m off to see the game, it should really be a very interesting match. To Lyon, it’s only a friendly, but for Partizan, who have a good team at the moment and very high hopes to reach the CL, it’s a challenge that they will not take lightly. Anyway, I really don’t care who wins, I’m very happy to attend the game and just want to see some damn good football that Lyon are known for. Whatever comes out of this, Lyon’s popularity here increased drastically, and if they put some good show tonight, number of OL fans in Serbia will definetely skyrocket, espacialy because the game is not competitive and there are only feelings of respect, not animosity, towards OL. And about the stalking, well, my girlfriend lives next to Hyatt, and I’m bringing her to see the game, so I’ll definely be passing by. Who knows, I might really take a peak… :)

P.S. There are rumors that even Lenny Kravitz, who has a concert in Belgrade tommorow, would sing during half-time. Allegedly the players wanted to bring him… :)

3 center backs? Is he nuts? We have Paillot as a 4th, and Bodmer was pretty bad as a center back last year, which was partially the reason Squillaci hated life at Lyon last year. I agree with Puel that Fontaine is to young to play, while Gassama is not an alternative on the left, so that area needs strenghtening. What I dont understand is he eagerness to use Valdivia, Beynie, Pjanic or Mounier as first teamers but not Paillot, Faure, Seguin, Fontaine or Gassama? I agree defenders often need more time to learn their position, but it seems silly that because Lyon have money we do not use the best generation of defensive players we have had since Santini was in charge with Sarte, Gomez etc.

All of you seem to think bodmer was bad at center back…he wasn’t very good in midfield when he played last fall either. He just needed to adjust to the squad. From what I saw he was better than Anderson most of the time. He has good clearances and is fairly good at sweeping. Not a Cris or a Mensah playing wise though, not good at one on ones. As for the youth, I think Puel just wanted to see how they faired in a real match with the rest of the team. The other generation has already proven they can.

He does look like the rock of Gibraltar. So I guess he is an upgrade over Squillaci. I’m wondering has Puel ever seen Boumsong play?
