The Second Battle of the Olympiques: Marseille vs. Lyon
By: Inara | April 5th, 2008This is it, guys. The clash of the titans, the SuperClassico, the game of the year. But whatever you call this match, it’s France’s two biggest teams facing off against each other in what is sure to be an electric encounter.
Marseille vs. Lyon may lack the history and passions of a derby or the desperation of a title/relegation battle, but if you want to see the best L1 has to offer, this game would be it. Regardless of their domestic destinies, the quality of football on display will take your breath away. Marseille and Lyon are French football, and they won’t let you forget it. So sit back and enjoy the show!

March 6, 2008
Stade Velodrome, Marseille
2:55 PM Eastern Time (20:55 CET, 19:55 GMT)
Obligatory pre-match sniping:
Marseille coach Eric Gerets was a partypooper last week when he asked Pape Diouf not to engage in his usual trash talking before a match against Lyon. Good thing Diouf didn’t listen, though his comments haven’t been as incendiary as they usually are. Even Jean-Michel Aulas, who can usually be counted on to bait Marseille, is being mind numbingly grown up about it, which is disappointing since these two presidents are sometimes even more interesting than the clubs they represent.
However, in a recent joint interview that was published on Lyon’s official website, there are some interesting little comments that bring a smile to my face. Only the first part has been posted so far, but the others should be up soon. My favorite parts where when Diouf said that Aulas was egocentric while Aulas that if he could make a dream signing, it’d be Franck Ribery!
Gregory Coupet is also helping to fan the flames. A few days ago, he said that it was easier to win at Marseille than at Valenciennes, which in turn pissed of Marseille, who essentially promised to make Coupet eat his words. Coupet later tried to calm those very same flames by saying that he only meant that it’s easier to want to win at Marseille than Valenciennes…Sure Greg, whatever you say. Magnusson has more on this matter at the Marseille Offside.
Match background:
The last time these two teams met, it was back in early November. At the time, Lyon were in their usual top spot, but Marseille were chilling in the depths of the relegation zone in 19th place. Fast forward to April, where Marseille are now in fourth place and within reach of a Champions League spot (though Lyon haven’t moved out of first).
Marseille has a whole host of talented players, the most famous being Samir Nasri. He’s been out of form in the past two months, but recently, he’s been improving and had a great performance with the France National Team against Mali, where he scored a goal. There is also Mahamdou Niang, who I think is one of the most underrated players in France. He’s their top scorer with 13 league goals. Djibril Cisse is also in good form, having netted 11 goals so far. And let’s not forget the impressive Lorik Cana, Mathieu Valbuena, and Steve Mandanda. So yeah, Marseille have tons of quality.
Both Lyon and Marseille are out of Europe and are in contention for only one domestic cup (though I have to say that Lyon have yet to suffer the embarrassment of losing to Carquefou). In terms of points, Marseille are 15 points adrift of Lyon and have almost no chance of catching up to them. With 44 goals scored and 33 conceded, they have the third best attack in the league, but their defense is about average.
Lyon on the other hand have scored 64 goals (20 more than Marseille!) and conceded 29, which gives them the best attack and the fourth best defense in the league (after Nancy, Lille, and Nice - see why I’m hot and bothered over Hugo Lloris?).
Another record in Lyon’s favor is the fact that Lyon are undefeated in the Velodrome for 11 years now. Last year, Lyon sensationally walked away with a 4-1 victory. But then again, Marseille are hard to predict, and they are the only team who have beat Lyon at home this season (along with Rangers…grrr). So Marseille definitely have what it takes to make Lyon suffer.
It just depends on which Marseille will show up…
Lyon info:
Alain Perrin waited as long as he could before making a decision on Karim Benzema’s fitness, but it turns out that our star striker will be missing this match. He was injured two weeks ago against PSG when he hurt his knee, and though he’s well on the road to recovery, Lyon don’t want to take any risks. For me personally, I’m glad that Benzema will be given more time to heal fully. Relapse is so much worse, and Benzema knows it better than most, when last year he re-injured his hamstring after coming back from injury too soon.
In other news, Cris will be out because of a sore throat. Nothing to be worried about, and he could probably use the rest as well. He’s been playing nonstop since his return from injury.
Le group lyonnais: Coupet, Vercoutre - Reveillère, Clerc, Squillaci, Boumsong, Grosso - Källström, Toulalan, Bodmer, Crosas, Juninho - Mounier, Govou, Delgado, Ben Arfa, Keita, Fred
On the Marseille side of things, Mathieu Valbuena will miss this match. Thank god. He basically ass-raped Lyon’s left flank last November and was their biggest danger.
Expected lineup:
Coupet
Clerc - Squillaci - Boumsong - Grosso
Bodmer - Toulalan - Juninho
Keita - Fred - Govou
I believe it’s Francois Clerc’s turn at right back, though Perrin may opt for more defensive solidarity by using Anthony Reveillere. In central defense, Jean-Alain Boumsong will be pairing Sebastien Squillaci.
In midfield, I expect Mathieu Bodmer to get the nod because he’s been playing so well these last few weeks, but it’s been a while since Kim Kallstrom had a start, and he’s looked very good in practice. Juninho is a no brainer.
Up front, with Karim Benzema out, that leaves Fred to take care of things in the center. As much as I’d love to see Hatem Ben Arfa on the pitch, Kader Keita and Sidney Govou both scored last weekend, and Perrin seldom drops a player who is in form. But there is still a chance for Ben Arfa though. Perrin’s comments in his press conference seemed positive about him.
Viewing options:
This match will be on Setanta for those of you who have it. If not, you should be able to find tons of streams here. I won’t be able to post working links before the match, so if one of you guys find a good one, I’d appreciate it if you posted it in the comments.
Expected Results:
I can see this match ending in a draw, though if it does, it’ll probably be a high scoring one. Both teams are better at going forward than at defending, so 2-2 is my guess.
FYI, I’ll be gone all day Sunday, so not only will I miss the match, I can’t even make my usual in-game comments. By the time I’m near a computer, it’ll be like ten o’clock at night. Please keep things going so that when I finally do get online, I’ll feel like I didn’t miss too much.

Tough to stomach a match like this. Sounds like they were beaten all over the park. In terms of the title race I don’t forsee a problem at all. Fairly easy run in with a few home games coming in. Benzema and Cris will be back next week which will give a big boost. Today highlights how important Toulalan is to the team. Anyone know the extent of the injuries to Toulalan and Fred?

well those ratings seem right, as grosso was hopeless throughout the match. And niang did seem like the man of the match.
As far as the injuries go, im not toally sure about toulalan, but from what i saw, he could be out for a week or more ( since he looked like he wanted back in the game ). As for fred, i dont know either.

WTF?
I’m gone for one day, and I come back to two disasters? Lyon falling at the velo, and OL Ladies losing out on Europe because of an away goal?
Geez. I’m never leaving my computer again.

Also, can I just say that Toulalan’s injury is a disaster? Not only is he: A) my fave OL player, B) fricking amazing, and C) a six foot tall bundle of adorableness,
But he’s the ONLY DM WE HAVE!!!
Crap.

We can’t take this defeat too seriously. OM were motivated and came to play. Lyon just bent over and pulled down their shorts. Yes, we lost, but we lost to Marseille. So it’s not as hurtful as the 3-0 loss to Lens (now that was embarrassing). It sucks because we broke our awesome velodrome streak, and Marseille are the first team since Lille in 2005-2006 to get six league points from us. We’re still favorites to win the title since we have no truly difficult teams left to play (though there are some potential banana skins).
From what I understand, all our players performed poorly today, with the exception of Ben Arfa and maybe Keita. Everyone else fell pretty flat unfortunately. Fred’s injury blows, but we’ll get Benzema back soon. It’s Toulalan’s that is more worrisome. He’s the one man on the team for whom we have no replacements.
Here’s a thought. Since Fabio Santos is currently suspended at Sao Paulo for one month, maybe he can fly back to France?

One more thing (I can’t believe I’m spamming my own blog):
Judging from the posted ratings, was Boumsong really our best defender tonight? And if so, what does that say about our defensive quality?

Inara - “Judging from the posted ratings, was Boumsong really our best defender tonight? And if so, what does that say about our defensive quality? ”
That Sandy Palliot cant develop fast enough lol. Yea, we’re probably going to look for a young CB during the transfer period.

Inara, from what I saw Boumsong was our best player, which says it all about our defence and team, along with Ben Arfa. Bodmer had an absolute howler, gave the ball away so much. Keita looked lively but alot of what he tried didn’t come off, and he was having to play centre foward for the 2nd half which he ain’t used to.
The thing is, Marseille put it up to Lyon, they played with huge desire and energy and Lyon didn’t match it. If Lyon can’t win domestic games like this, it’s no wonder they get undone in the CL.
We’ll still prolly win the league but I’m hoping as the saying goes, you learn more from a loss. Perrin looked like a lost child, JMA looked pretty annoyed….Posted from

Toulalan and Fred have had an MRI. Bad news for Toulalan who is estimated to be out for four weeks - ouch. Inara I think maybe he needs some special care from you to accelerate the healing.
Fred’s recovery should be just a matter of a few days.Posted from

damn, four weeks. Thats practially the season right there. They shouldnt let him sit out the remainder of it. But then again we’ll have none in the middle. Perrin is gonna have his work cut out for him now, as Benz and Toulalan were basically keeping his job in tact for most of the season in my opinion.

Let’s not be unfair to Boumsong : he got good ratings because he had a good game. Until now he’s been a good surprise, he’s not a leader like Cris but a solid, experienced defender (and faster than I expected).

Toulalan’s absence will force Perrin to do some creative thinking. If Muller were healthy, he could be deployed as an emergency DM, but he’s not, and I don’t believe we have anyone among the senior players who could take his place effectively. Bodmer was a DMish type player at Lille, but he played next to Makoun. We have Crosas, who was trained as a “4″ but seems better in a higher position on the pitch. There is Beynie, who hasn’t played for the senior team since 2004.
As Ronald says, with his two best players out, Perrin is going to finally show us what kind of coach he is. It’s up to him now.

Heard tonight the only good news of the week, on french radio RTL: Cris declaring 1)he was sick in the last couple of days but is now fit, and 2) he seems himself stay at Lyon until the end of his career.
(I just hope Perrin doesn’t emulate him)
OK, the level of insecurity experienced by Brasilian players plays a role in this statement, but he sees with Juni how well we treat our beloved Lideres Brasileiros…Posted from

i made a mistake in my last post. I meant to say that Toulalan SHOULD sit out the remainder of the season if hes really out for four weeks ( to prevent him from re-injruing it and not playing in the EURO )

Funny you should mention that Ronald. Apparently Domenech was at the velodrome last Sunday. He’s probably glad that Toulalan is out for the next couple of weeks. At least he’ll be well rested for the Euros.

As I said to my friend at half time :
“If we win the game, it’s just a miracle”.We played almost all the game without 4 players of our type squad : Benzema, Cris, Toulalan and Fred !
The only type of player we had not on the bench for this game was : a real striker and a DM.
Guess who get injured ? Our striker and our DM.
Plus Marseille was on fire.
That was nearly impossible.I just want to notice, and I think it’s a very important detail, that Marseille scored twice as we were 10 against 11.
Fred was out when Cisse scored, and he was on the pitch but lyed down, waiting for a sub, when Niang scored. That’s surely the fact of the game.
Nasri did an ugly game for the 15th minutes, because Toulalan was here to stick him. And Jeremy did well.
But when Toulalan was out, Nasri could go where he wanted to, and he did a fabulous game.
Grosso is really NOT the defender we need. The two goals in the half time came from right wing, with a LOOOOT of space for Marseille…
Don’t forget Toulalan is very often on our left side to “help” Grosso.
Today he was not. Marseille scored twice. And for the corner, I think it’s an huge mistake to let Kallstrom on a face to face with Niang. But we didn’t have so much defenders at this time of the party…
If you consider that Grosso and Clerc are often making runs on the wing, and that Kallstrom, Bodmer and Juninho are offensive players, you realize that we had only 2 real and pure back players on the pitch : Boumsong and Scquillaci.
That was impossible.

Ronald.
Its a good analogy you made JO. Basically with toulalan out, its was just a matter a time when marseille counter attacked and scored. The only reason we got a goal scored is because of Juninho, other than that Keita was smothered for most parts of the game as he was the only person on the pitch ( besides ben arfa maybe ) who had the ability to make a difference.
Even though it was a tough game, it isnt time to panic. IF we lose the next game……….then, its time to panic.

It’s a mission impossible of course, but it’s nice to see someone from the league actually trying to poach a Lyon player instead of the other way around. Go get’em Pape.Posted from

I was thinking the exact same thing, lol.
From the NT point of view, I also feel bad for Bodmer, whose chances of being selected for the Euros are a lot dimmer now–I mean, it’s not as if they were all that high to begin with, but I was hoping Domenech would at least give him another look, he and Nasri being the only playmaker-types we have available currently, iirc.Posted from
