There’s a New Sheriff in Town…

By: Inara | July 17th, 2007

policecris.jpgSay hello to Lyon’s new captain.

In honor of this occasion, I thought I would take this opportunity to do a profile on Cristiano Marques Gomes, otherwise known as Cris.

He began his career at Corinthians, going next to Cruzeiro, which was broken up by a brief stint at Bayer Leverkusen. He came to Lyon in 2004 and has won three titles with the club so far. He has 22 caps (and 1 goal) with Brazil, and also won the Copa America with them.

He’s known as “The Police Officer” because of his absolute authority in Lyon’s back line and the strict way he marshals Lyon’s defenses. It’s not an exaggeration to say that he is the most feared player in L1. A hothead, he’s the closest thing Lyon has to a badass and sometimes gets into scuffles with the opposition if he feels one of his teammates were unfairly fouled. With Sebastien Squillaci, Cris forms the most effective CB pairing in France and one of the best in Europe.

He’s an aggressive defender but is also a goalscorer, unafraid to help out in the attack if necessary. He’s scored some valuable goals at crucial moments for Lyon - he’s particularly good with headers.

Unlike most other Lyon players, Cris may end up staying at the club for the rest of his career. Like Juninho, he has been subject to more lucrative offers but has so far preferred personal happiness to material wealth and recognition. Last year he was heavily courted by AC Milan, and just one month ago, he was subjected to a very big offer from Juventus, who offered a hefty increase to his salary and a starting spot. Instead, Cris extended his Lyon contract until 2011.

Thanks to Sidney Govou and his big mouth, Juninho turned down next year’s captaincy for the sake of team harmony. So after a few weeks of consideration, Alain Perrin has decided to award Cris the armband.

So perhaps his captaincy is partially a reward for his fidelity and in recognition for all he’s done for Lyon.

He’s not calm and soothing like Juninho, and he’s more apt to inflame tempers than to soothe them. But he’s a warrior and has a lot of fighting spirit, and maybe that’s just what Lyon needs to wake the players up from mediocrity. He can also be relied upon his sense of humor, is quick to take new recruits under his wing, and is a cheerful presence in the locker room.

Who’s the boss?

Cris follows the tradition of Brazilian leadership at Lyon. The previous three named captains were Sonny Anderson, Claudio Cacapa, and Juninho (though Sidney Govou held the armband temporarily under Paul le Guen).

Here is an interesting interview of Cris, taken just before the game against Reading. In it, he talks about why he chose to remain at Lyon, his faith in Fred’s abilities, his relationship with Juninho, and his wish that the club recruit Willian using his soon to be vacated non-EU spot.

Interesting facts:

* His first stint in Europe with Bayer Leverkusen was a failure, and he returned to Cruzeiro afterwards.

* Cris prefers to play in the right position in central defense, which is the spot he occupied when partnered with Claudio Cacapa (whom Cris adores as a brother). But in order to accommodate Squillaci, former OL manager Gerard Houllier forced Cris to move to the left, which caused lingering tensions between coach and player.

* His wife, Tatiane, already has a blog post dedicated to her.

* During Lyon’s search for a successor to Edmilson, Lyon were contemplating Phillipe Mexes. But Bernard Lacombe, convinced he had found a “pearl” in Brazil, persuaded Paul Le Guen to take Cris instead.

* Right before he signed for Lyon, he got into a fight during Cruziero’s game against Atletico Mineiro (see the video below). He was suspended for six months, but after extensive pleading from Lyon, the Brazilian Football Federation decided to keep his suspension from applying overseas.

*During a France-Brazil match in 2004, the physical duel between him and Thierry Henry gave Cris the reputation of a tough, rigid defender.

* Out of all the opponents in all the teams he has ever come across, Cris considers Emmanuel Adebayor (when at Monaco) to be the only player who gave him serious problems.

FIGHT!!!

Cris scores against Lens.

Cris will be a good captain.
Juninho is the playmaker, but he doesn’t have a big enough mouth on the pitch… Lyon need a man leader as captain, and I think that Cris is by far the best for that. He can motivate troups for big games, and never loses hope of coming back into a game.
Actually, when Lyon is behind on the score sheet, that is when Cris is the most dangerous, and he rushes forward as if his life depended on it.

    Good choice!

Cris is a really great guy. More interested in familial stability than in money. I really love him :)

Definitely the best choice. I am very surprised Muller was considered, as he will play one game out of 4 at the most. Govou would have been a mistake because of his row with Juninho. Squillaci was an option, and he might be the next in line.

Too bad Juninho turned down the captaincy, but it might be best for the team, as it will relieve him of an extra pressure and tone down his “star” status.

Govou’s comments were correct about Juninho. He is not a natural born leader, and that made the stress of the armband unbearable. His performances dropped significantly and his relationship with team mates was strained. Cris is a better selection, while I firmly believe that Govou should be a vice captain along with Coupet, but since Perrin prefers to have captains on the field Toto Squillaci will be a vice captain probably. Govou thrived with the added responsibility, and he has played well the past two games because he knows Perrin will give him a shot, especially with Keita being tried on the left. Keita will have to adapt, he didnt play a single with his left foot while out there which is a huge negative, but he has the speed and skill to get around it occassionally. Very off topic, anyways Cris will do well as a captain.

Also, Remy Riou had a parting cheap shot for Lyon:

The Lyon-born player, who first joined his local club eleven years ago, appeared in 22 Ligue 1 games last season, covering for the injured Fabien Audard at Lorient. Auxerre have paid a reported €800,000 for the player, with coach Jean Fernandez saying Riou will “will initially be considered as the No2 at his position” behind former AS Nancy-Lorraine goalkeeper Olivier Sorin. “Lyon do not really trust young players,” said Riou. “They currently have two very good custodians - Grégory Coupet and Rémy Vercoutre - so I preferred to leave.” Auxerre missed out on a place in European competition after finishing eighth in Ligue 1 last season.

Dont really trust young players, who are you kidding. Good bye to you, you arent as good as Hartock or the kid at Nice, good luck a Auxerre, they love to pick up our scraps.

For now, I think Cris is the best choice. Govou has been captain before, but his role in the Juninho business was handled pretty badly, and he might have lost the confidence of his teammates. Because no matter how bad things are going, a captain doesn’t criticize his teammates without confronting them about it first.

I noticed that when Cris was captain against Reading, when we went off the pitch, it was Muller who was vice captain. With the messed up formations, I guess we don’t find out who that will be for a while yet.

In the future, I’d like to see either Toulalan or Squillaci…assuming they stay, of course.

Toulalan will have to speak up more, he seems pretty silent on the pitch, and as my dutch youth coach always said, “talk to each other on the pitch like you talk to you girlfriends”. This is also the man that suggested when we needed to create space fo ourselves on set pieces that we tap our opponent in the naughty bits and run away, then told us to practice this technique on each other… didnt hapen.

Toulalan used to be captain of the Espoirs, wasn’t he?

Yeah, I think he is kind of shy, but I’ve noticed more and more he’s not afraid to speak up - I remember his insane pleading when Juninho when off, and during a PSG match when there was a miscall. Perrin himself said that Toulalan needed to be a little more extroverted, or he’d make a great captain, so here’s me hoping!

I agree that he would make a good captain, and yes he was captain of the Espoirs. If he becomes more vocal and puts in solid performances again this year. One of the things with being a good captain is stability, you need to be a consistent performer. You also have to be a personality within the dressing room, which he may be, its only his second year. I will assume that he is not as shy and timid anymore and that other players are starting to look up to him, so the captaincy is in his favor as long as he doesnt leave for a bigger club in a year or two.
