Tiago Deal Complete
By: Inara | June 21st, 2007
It’s been officially confirmed. Tiago Cardoso Mendes, formerly of Braga, Benfica, Chelsea, and now Olympique Lyonnais, is now a Juventus player.
Tiago has completed his medical in Turin and has signed the contract.
Terms are as follows: Tiago signed a four year deal in which he’ll earn a gross salary of €2.5m per year. Juventus will pay €15m to Lyon, as well as usual compensation for Champions League appearances and title wins.
Italian media claim that AC Milan offered €17m, but Tiago had already agreed to personal terms with Juventus by that time and was too honorable to go back on his word (this is totally believable, as Tiago is not a sneaky or deceitful player who holds out for more money).
If you’re wondering why Aulas let Tiago go for only €15m, it’s because Juventus have also agreed to allow Lyon the right to purchase David Trezeguet for €12m. That doesn’t mean that Lyon will, however. It depends on whether Trezeguet wants to stay with Juventus or not, whether Lyon really want a striker, and whether Lyon and Trezeguet can somehow come to an agreement on his salary.
Now that I’ve completed my official blogging duties, I think I’m going to take the rest of the day off from football. I knew this day was coming, and I know Lyon have an even better replacement waiting in the wings…but still, it hurts to see one of my favorite players leave for another team, even if he left in the most honest, honorable way possible.
I need to go nurse my broken heart now.

Good bye Tiago, too bad indeed Aulas did not hire Trezeguet!

It is looking good for juve… Lets say in the best scenario their formation looks like this.
Buffon
Grygera,Milito, Barzagli,CHiellini
Camoranesi/Salihamidzic,Tiago, Almiron, Nedved
Iaquinta/Trezeguet/Del PieroBench:
Mirante,
Boumsong,
Zannetti,
Giannicheda
Marchisio
Molinaro,
Zebina,
PalladinoThey will atleast qualify for Europe!

Lyon will obviously sign another player. But everyone is so tight lipped around there that it’s hard to tell. Aulas said no defender unless Abidal leaves, which is unlikely but still possible, as Barcelona are planning to submit ANOTHER bid (third? fourth?). Can someone give them a clue and tell them to bid 14 so we can get it over with?
I thought we were done with strikers, but the Trezeguet clause in Tiago’s contract makes me wonder, because Aulas wouldn’t have added that in lieu of extra cash unless he really was going to sign Trezeguet.
Also, I would not mind another, younger, midfielder as long as he was an attacking, creative one. It looks unlikely Lyon want Lassana Diarra.
And it seems obvious that no left winger will be coming in. Next year is Ben Arfa’s chance to impress, though I’m worried about CL matches. I don’t doubt his quality in L1, but when he comes up against Willy Sagnol, Daniel Alves, and all those other imposing right backs out there, I wonder…

Inara, the best fix for a broken heart? Tequila. Lots of it.
Until the next day.
Or…um…so I’m told.

I’ll be ordering lots of tequila when I go out after work today. Then perhaps I’ll be able to forget the image of Tiago in a black and white striped jersey. I will instead fantasize about Bodmer in an OL jersey. The tequila will definitely help.
Tiago already has his own thread at the Juventus forum.

I’m surprised he’s making less money in Juventus. I guess he really wanted to play in Italy.

I think he’s still earning a bit more at Juventus. In one of his interviews he said financially, the deal was good too. But I don’t think it’s that much more of a difference. Maybe a few extra thousand at the end of the year. For Tiago, it was never really about the money. He took a pay cut when he came to Lyon, and in fact, Milan offered him more money than Juve this time around. But once again, Tiago chose a club where he could be a starter and contribute. I admire that about him.

Tiago made a good choice and of course i think he did it for sporting reasons purely, which is admirable. Inara, I agree a little about Ben Arfa, he will do well in ligue 1, but in the CL I do worry a little. It depends on what formation Perrin uses though. In the usual 4-3-2-1 there will be alot of emphasis on him beating his man and getting crosses in which he needs to improve, while in a 4-4-2 it wont be the most important thing but still vital, but i anticpate Ben Arfa playing as the shadow striker in a 4-4-2 if Perrin is smart, which i think he is, and having someone like Kallstrom or Belhadj out wide. Not Naturals, but can do the job.

Maybe will Perrin decide to play 4-3-3 most of the time in Ligue 1, and 4-4-2 in CL ?

Its a distinct possibility, and I think in the knockrounds it is a great option because teams like Milan and Chelsea are so strong defensively that it becomes difficult for Lyon to break them down, and they over commit leading to slackness at the back and ultimately goals against. This was not the case against Roma this year, it was just a poor match, the blame rests solely on the players. But in Ligue 1, the 4-3-2-1 (I dont like 4-3-3, we are not Dutch) is very effective because the French teams are not of the quality of Milan so breaking down a team like Auxerre or Rennes is not as difficult, although alst year Valenciennes literally put everyone and there away games bus in fron of the goal (to quote thegreat Vicente Del Bosque).

I don’t think Nilmar will come back (I don’t think he even wants to). He won’t come back to Lyon to be benched again, he made that clear. Though he does want to play in Europe (Benfica were really interested but due to the mess of his contract situation, they don’t even know who to make the offer to).
