Tiago the Mercenary
By: Inara | June 20th, 2007
I love Tiago.
He always makes my heart flutter in a totally non maternal fashion. But blinded as I am by long distance stalkerish adoration, even I have always known that Tiago is a mercenary at heart.
However, his kind of mercenary is much easier to stomach than the kind of Ribery and Ballack, because at least Tiago isn’t selling his soul for money, just for pride.
I can totally deal. Besides, Tiago has never been at a club for more than two years, so I guess I’ve been expecting this divorce.
Today’s Le Progres had an interesting article on these qualities of Tiago, though since the writer isn’t chained to him by love like me, his tone was, how shall I say, more accusatory (Le Progres being one of the few papers which doesn’t hate Lyon).
Some excerpts (in google):
Without protesting it on the roofs, the Lyons leaders well quickly understood that it held in the man that they had unearthed in Chelsea, by also putting Essien in the balance, a player rather of mercenary type. Very pleasant the daily newspaper, to professional, but little rocked by the love the shirt, Tiago had made the turn in Lyon.
Discrete with the press, not very interested to invest itself in the Lyons life, Tiago will undoubtedly turn the heels with out of pocket its two titles of champion of France.
At 26 years, excuse little, Tiago already passed by Braga, Benfica, Chelsea, Lyon and is perhaps on the point of slipping on the shirt of Juventus Turin. “A career is very short. Since I left Braga, I always functioned with the instinct with the desire for discovering several horizons, it am a way of progressing”
Tiago, I will always support you wherever you go, and I will root for Juventus for your sake (unless you come across Lyon, that is). I’m sorry to see you go. Well, not too sorry.
Some details on his transfer: Lyon Communications Director Olivier Blanc said that Tiago is practically a Juve player. The transfer is rumored to be around €15m. I’m a little disbelieving about the price, as AC Milan offered €18m, and reports were that Juventus wanted Tiago desperately enough that they would have gone for the full price. So either Aulas is getting a player in exchange or there are some really sweet clauses in favor of Lyon in Tiago’s contract.
Also in the same article was Lyon’s obligatory denial of the day. Officially, there is no agreement between Florent Malouda and Chelsea, and Lyon turned down Chelsea’s swap deal two weeks ago.
That basically means that Lyon is holding out for more money. According to Le Parisien, Chelsea have offered €22m, but Aulas wants the full €25m. But expect the deal to be done in the next few days.

Tiago is a quality player, had my eye on him since he was at Benfica. And he did pretty well at Chelsea under the circumstances. But I think Lyon is the best team for him, and I don’t think he’ll do as well at Juventus, Milan, or any other club. Lyon fit him like a club, and I think his moving his bad for him and for the club he’s going to.
This is unrelated, but is Lyon interested in Yaya Youre? Barcelona might bid for him, but I don’t trust French players that Lyon aren’t interested in. Since you guys do get the cream of the crop, and if a player in France doesn’t come from Lyon, it makes you wonder how good he really is.

I understand Juve’s move. He’s much better than Zanetti and could replace Camoranesi easily. What I like about him is that he doesn’t invest himself much in the clubs he plays for. Kinda like Rivaldo

Ciao Tiago !
That was a great player, it’s true. But I don’t think he will miss so much to Olympique Lyonnais. We have very very pleasants substitutes.Posted from

Jamie: I believe Lyon were interested in Toure last summer, but for whatever reason, Lyon chose not to pursue their interest, as they had signed Toulalan and wanted to get Makoun also. But Toure is a very good player, with lots of progression ahead of him, and he won’t mind being a squad player at Barca.
I’ve had a while to prepare myself for Tiago’s departure, so I’m more accepting of it now. Plus Bodmer is a really nice consolation prize. I hope he does well at Juventus, I really do.

Wiltord is being linked with Palermo since Rennes think his wages are to high. Adios Wiltord

Wiltord is also interested by PSG, but I don’t think they can afford him either. Same with Govou. They are both to expensive for French clubs outside of Lyon. PSG has a huge salary crisis in having to pay Pauleta so much money after Lyon drove his wages up, and Cisse’s salary is partly covered by Marseille.

Yeah but Paris have two solutions:
- The Yepes solution that also works with Luyidula. Give a player a floor salary of 150000 euros a month and give him thee times the normal bonus depending on his personal performance, the club’s ranking and the competitions they get at the end of the season.
- The Ronaldinho solution that worked for Heinze, Worns, Pochettino and many players before. Get Nike to pay for half the contract.
When Wiltord was in Arsenal and wanted to come back in France he did anything to make Paris understand he wanted to come back home. And Vahid majorly dropped the ball. Since he’s here at least once a week, he might as well stay in the area.Posted from

Yeah but Wiltord will not shy away from his wages demands, and might think Italy may be better suited for his age.
