Valenciennes vs Lyon : trouble, trouble

By: Megame | January 25th, 2013

After what has to be the worst OL game this season (vs Evian, 0-0), Lyon now travel north to meet one of the teams they fare the worst against: Valenciennes (not once in their last four encounters did Lyon manage to win). Now is a good time for a euphemism: Lyon could be in a better situation.

Granted, Lyon are still at the top of L1, only second to PSG due to a lower point difference. But with only two wins in the last 6 games, it is obvious Lyon lost pace, therefore losing ground and loosing faith in their strength.
The defense, who displayed a welcome strength since the beginning of the season, started showing complacency and lack of discipline (4 goals conceded in the last 3 games), like when the amateurs of Epinal kicked us out of Coupe de France and couldn’t believe how easy it was to come unmarked and score from a cornerkick; and as if this wasn’t enough, the traditional offense is sterile, and the last 3 goals have been scored by Fofana, Gonalons and Umtiti. Quite telling.
Some players lost the stamina and efficience that helped Lyon propel themselves atop L1; Gomis started being transparent most of the last games; Lisandro, the shadow of his former self, started doubting. Rejecting the armband to focus on himself, he is said to have complained about his position (he wants to play as the peak, which Garde normally grants to Gomis) , and talked about leaving if he doesn’t get satisfaction. And, even worse for Lyon’s effectiveness, Malbranque’s form dropped, and Gourcuff, just back like Grenier, are far from their best. The same holds for Lacazette, so that few players actually maintain a high standard.

This, plus the transfer talks and Aulas insisting on several players leaving this winter (most probably Bastos, possibly Lisandro, Gomis, Gourcuff, Briand), instilled doubt and unsettled the team. So will the same Lyon as in the first half season show up tonight? Will they display the right mindset? I cross fingers.

Allez l’OL!

Lyon :
Vercoutre – Réveillère, Bisevac, Lovren, Umtiti – Gonalons, Fofana – Lacazette, Malbranque, Ghezzal – Lisandro.

Valenciennes :
Penneteau – G. Bong, Rose, Isimat-Mirin, Mater – Nguette, R. Gomis, Sankharé, M. Dossevi – Le Tallec, Aboubakar.

    LATEST TRANSFER NEWS AND RUMOURS

11 hours to go before the winter transfer window officially closes. It's a nail-bitting wait as we know Aulas wants to save on salaries, and possibly get a few millions from - heavily discounted- sales..

So here's the picture so far:

    - Monzon left for Fluminense on a free loan until 31 december 2013, unless a club wants to purchase him in the summer transfer window.

    - Bastos left for Schalke 04 on a paying loan (2M€) for 18 month, with a 4.5M€ purchase option, plus bonuses of up to 0.7M€. (Wow, I mean wow. We purchased him 18M€...)

    - Sidy Koné left for Caen on a free loan for 6 months, without purchase option

    - Jimmy Briand is pushed hard by OL towards Monaco for a 6 months loan with automatic purchase option if AS Monaco makes it to Ligue 1 at the end of the season. But... He attended OL's training session this morning, so the deal could finally be off!

    - Bakary Koné could be loaned with a purchase option to Shaktar Donetsk or Zenit St Petersburg

    - Yohann Gourcuff apparently rejected a loan with purchase option to Atletico Madrid.

    - OL and Juventus apparently couldn't agree on Lisandro, but he seems to be on a Tottenham wishlist of strikers ... In which Bafe Gomis could be an option, too.

    - Also, among the OL youth, Harry Novillo left for 6 months for Gfc Ajaccio in Ligue 2. With Defourny and Yattara gone earlier, we're approaching the quota of 7 players on loan...

Gulp... If it goes on like this this afternoon and evening I'm not even sure we'll have enough players to field a team...

  • pierrot

from what i can tell, it's just monzon, bastos, s kone, and novillo from the above list who's definitely gone or on loan.

    anyone else??

  • Megame

No indeed, Gourcuff, Licha, Bafé, Jimbo, Baky are still in Lyon. Half of Aulas objective is met...

  • Megame

The reason why Brand is back in Lyon is because he could find an agreement with Monaco. So the deal is off.

Sucks to see Bastos go but if we can hold on to the players we still have on our squad, we will qualify for the CL. We have enough in the Arsenal, and this will bode well for when we open OL Land
