Aftermath: Arrests, Lasers, and Very Expensive Players
By: Inara | February 22nd, 2008Normally I do an extensive post match review of all Champions League games, but lab has been crazy. Forgive me? In lieu of a review though, here is an assortment of news related to the game:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is worse than a laser attack if you ask me. Stolen from Nick.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To all those dumbasses who thought that Karim Benzema was just desperate for a move out of Lyon this summer, think again. Before last Wednesday’s game, Lyon had already laughed at €27m offers for their young star. Now, after making Alex Ferguson drool on public TV and having him stalk Benzema in the tunnels to “greet” him, the price has more than doubled to €60m. And anyway, Benzema wants to go to Spain and basically told Manchester United to f*ck off. At least we know that Benzema will be welcomed in Italy.
Assuming Benzema continues to improve and perform well on the big stages, this price will only increase, especially if he has a good showing at Euro 2008. As things stand, Benzema will be extending his contract by another year to 2013, and his release clause has been set to €100m. Benzema is becoming so expensive that soon, only Bill Gates will be able to afford him (which makes me wonder why the hell Aulas isn’t bringing him on as an “investor”).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perrin has explained his reason for starting Francois Clerc instead of Hatem Ben Arfa. According to Perrin, Ben Arfa’s offensive movements as of late have been wasteful (ie selfish), which Lyon couldn’t afford against MU. Clerc was a better choice. But Perrin has said that Ben Arfa could still play in Manchester if he becomes a team player again. Ouch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We all heard about the “laser beam attack” on Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s typical that the English press ignored the fact that 47 fans were arrested before the game as well. Lyon police haven’t identified whether they were home or away fans, but considering that since 2000, there have only been something like 5 or 6 arrests total at the Gerland (not counting the 47 from Wednesday night), I think we can make an educated guess about the nationality of those arrested.

Just to piss the English off, Aulas invited Dr. Evil to the game.
United however has complained to UEFA because they were concerned that such lasers can cause damage. I’ve been reading different reports, some saying it was from a laser pointer and completely harmless while others saying it the laser could have had something attached to it. UEFA thinks the situation is “peculiar” and doesn’t seem to concerned about it. At most, Lyon will be slapped with a fine for having a particularly stupid fan.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t know about you guys, but I thought Jean-Alain Boumsong came out of the Twilight Zone last Wednesday. He played solidly, made very timely and efficient tackles, won all his headers, and was the pillar of our defense - to the utter disappointment of Manchester United, who were hoping that Boum Boum would be their 12th player. Instead, he was one of the best OL players that night, right after Jeremy Toulalan and Karim Benzema. So the question is, where did the old Boum Boum go, and can we keep the new one?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
According to the latest survey by Sport+Markt, a German strategy and monitoring group, the most popular club in Europe is Barcelona, with an estimated 50 million fans. Only two French clubs are in the top 20, Lyon and Marseille. Lyon is 13th with 10.4 million fans while Marseille follows closely behind at 14th, with 9.7 million fans. That makes Lyon the most popular French club in Europe (but not in France, which is a different matter).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, and Benzema plans to kick Manchster United out of the Champions League. But Perrin thinks Lyon is already out of the tournament.
seriously Perrin is so pessimistic can he be fired already so lyon can have a coach that inspires them to play well it’s like he is just along for the ride at times when he is on the sidelines
Technically, as the way things stand, Lyon ARE OUT of the competition as Man U have the away goal. Maybe Perrin’s forgotten about the leg at OT though. Oh and Ben Arfa shoul d start at OT. Seriously, Ben Arfa would destroy Wes Brown on that left side. If it wasn’t for Govou’s bad finished and useless left foot, we could of scored twice in the 1st half.
About the laser thing. I would like to add something that appears very important.
During the game, I saw (and you can believe me, I’m sure of that !) the laser just next to Juninho, before he shoots a VERY important free kick. The “Laserman” took aim at him, but didn’t suceed, surely because he was too far away.
THAT proves that we cannot be sure the man who made this laser things is a lyonnais ! Why would he take aim at Juni if he was ???
But nobody saw that on TV, because it was on the grass, and not on the player.Posted from
Yes that away goal is definately HUGE, however I must disagree with you “Jao” Lyon is not out of the competition just yet. OL will be attacking hard knowing full well they need at least one to stay alive and have any hopes, and we all know that MU defense is not known for being STELLAR STELLAR. If they do score lets just hope we do not see another episode of what happened back in ‘05 with AC Milan. Allez L’OL !! Like Benezema said: Lets fuckin’ go to OT and do this…send them snob bastards home !!
Rooney is a dirty player, expecially when he’s on his own up front and didn’t finish that chance he had. He gets frustrated, swears and fouls people. Boumsong *pause* AMAZED me! He was brilliant all game, throwing his body into tackles(something Rio Ferdinand NEVER does). Laser “attack” is a poor excuse for C.Ronaldo yet again not being able to perform against decent opposition, he was ineffective start to finish.
Manchester have luck. Lyon were better team, and they will prove that at Old Traford. Benzema will destroy Vidic and Ferdinand. Man U - Lyon 1-2 Benzema Juninho will be the heros
Daly, I think you need to read my post a little more carefully. I was agreeing with Perrin when he said, “WHERE THINGS STAND, we are out of the competition.” The key words being WHERE THINGS STAND meaning where we are CURRENTLY. You get where I am going with this?
Gotcha “Jao”
got a little excited, just upsets me when people (like my pals) tell me its already over.
Allez L’OL !!
anyone who can blame govou for OL not beating MU needs a checkup. sidney was walking on water. the left-footer he missed looks easy in slo-mo…
a W at OT looks a lot more possible to me now than a draw at gerland did the day before that match. i’d been reading a lot about the dynamic duo of rio & vidic… pure redtop hype for a change. scoring twice is do-able, and puts the shoe on the other foot.
OL will have nothing to lose and everything to win. no one will consider getting eliminated by MU on two tough matches as the end of the old era. but if we DO get by them, it just may be the START of a new one!
details about the “47 arrests”, the best i can make out…
all but 10 were for fake tickets.
in the afternoon there were some objects thrown by 4 young lyonnais at a group of manchester supporters outside a bar in the center of town, 3 mancunians who riposted were also arrested. there were other incidents between about 200 english supporters and a couple of dozen lyonnais near the place bellecour. no arrests you can see from the photo in the 20min article (taken in the rue de la barre) that it wasn’t exactly a smackdown between top boys.
between 6 and 8pm, 3 other MU fans were arrested for “assaulting” a law officer. as everywhere, it takes very little to incur this charge, even verbal abuse is sometimes sufficient, though this is generally termed “outrages” in france, not “violences”.
hmmmmmmm, i think i remember saying something like this after the Saint-Étienne, when benzema won it with a free kick. As a matter a fact i think i even said 60m. I think i derserve some kudos for that prediction lol :^)
