Frederic Piquionne is Lyonnais, No One Really Cares
By: Inara | July 31st, 2008Right. So Frederic Piquionne is a Lyon player. He was nabbed for €4.5m on a four year contract from Monaco. Everyone is excited. Really.
*tumbleweeds*
Or maybe not. Umm…

A new player? What? When did this happen?
Normally there is a lot more excitement - or at least discussion - when Lyon sign a new player, but compared to their other transfers, Piquionne has received comparatively little attention. I haven’t received any google alerts in English confirming this transfer. Even his wikipedia page hasn’t been updated yet!
Read on for the deets of the transfer.
Name: Frédéric Piquionne
Age: 29
Position: Striker
Previous Clubs: Nimes, Rennes, St. Etienne, Monaco
Many of you will remember Piquionne from two seasons ago, when Lyon tried to sign him in the winter of the 2006/2007 season. He played for St. Etienne back then, so the transfer was doomed from the start (only 20 players in the history of the world have ever worn the jerseys of both Lyon and St. Etienne). Since Gerard Houllier had his heart set on Piquionne, Aulas did his best to bring him without being held to ransom.
But St. Etienne didn’t budge, and when Piquionne began applying pressure on his end, Les Verts responded by sending him to the reserves. That prompted his infamous “I’m a slave” comment, which caused quite a bit of furor in France.
Eventually, St. Etienne became so hostile for him that he was forced to leave. Since Lyon wasn’t a possible destination, he eventually ended up in Monaco on loan (they eventually bought him for €7m).
Up until his transfer to Monaco, Piquionne was well rated. He wasn’t very prolific as strikers go, but his technical ability and speed meant that he often opened up the defenses for other attackers. When Lyon registered their interest, Piquionne was also attracting the attention of Raymond Domenech, who called him up a few times to the NT.
Unfortunately, his move to Monaco turned out to be a stumbling block in his career. He failed to adjust to his new team and then later, he fell out with the coach. He’s managed 12 goals in 42 league appearances for Monaco, which is pretty good considering he didn’t start most matches. That’s way better than Milan Baros at any rate.
Puel has been a fan of Piquionne for a while, so I guess he has his reasons for bringing him to Lyon. During today’s press conference, Bernard Lacombe confirmed that Piquionne was at Lyon precisely because he was a different type of player than Karim Benzema and Fred.
However, I’m slightly concerned with his attitude. He’s a known troublemaker - he fell out with his manager at Rennes, then at St. Etienne, and again at Monaco. He’s coming to Lyon with the knowledge that he’ll be #3 striker, at least right now, but I have to wonder how long his patience will last. To me, his arrival indicates that Puel will continue with the one striker formation, which means that it would be impossible to accommodate a higher profile signing alongside of Benzema and Fred.
Piquionne has acknowledged the fact that most Lyon fans don’t care for his transfer, so he has vowed to prove his worth to them. I suspect part of the reason for the apathy was because his transfer was so anti-climatic. After hearing names like Samuel Eto’o, Luis Fabiano, and Diego Milito, we end up with a player that no OL fan wanted. Even I thought the Piquionne rumors were a smokescreen for a bigger signing. Never in a million years did I think Claude Puel was serious about this guy. But he’s here now, so all we can do is hope that he is useful to the team.

i would have been happier with Diego Milito, but thats just me. Hopefully Puel knows what he’s doing.

Awful. Id prefer we not spend money to make a lateral move and just keep Baros. Piquonne sucks, lets face it, and this was the first in many miss-steps I fear. I will give Lacombe credit, he very rarely makes a mis-step with transfers, something Puel, like Le Guen, is all to good at.

Lacombe didn’t want Piquionne. He actually pushed for Milito. This was totally Puel’s signing.

Puel doesnt know much about foreign players. Lacombe knows a lot more about them because of his scouting.

cant see the point of this signing
i prefer remy or tafer over him any day
JMA talks on and on about the champions league, well, you cant win it with just benzema, hopefully fred will finally show his true potentialPosted from

Well, Tafer will also be available. But I guess the club felt that he was too young to be a reliable option (he’s so young he’s never even played for the reserve side yet).
The thing I like is that Piquionne is 29. Most of Lyon’s players are really young - the club’s average age is 23.8. I’m all for older players (though I would have preferred someone with a more impressive resume - I’d love to have Pauleta, since PSG don’t want him) because I think they bring so much more to the table than just raw talent and speed.

Also, Lyon are making it known to the world that they desperately want a LB. Lacombe said that Armand was unlikely because the season is starting in one week. He also said that they wanted someone to be Grosso’s backup, not necessarily someone to push him out of the pecking order.

I know Lacombe didnt want Piquonne, and I lament the fact that Lacombe no longer has the power over transfers that I once campaigned against him having. Its a double edged sword I guess, but in this case, Puel has downgraded the team. Tafer would have been the preferred option, and after seeing him play a few times, I dont think he needs the reserves to be ready for Ligue 1. His physical conditioning needs improvement, thats all.

I think Tafer would have been great too, though I think Puel would rather him spend a season or two with the CFAs..

Guys, it’s not like Tafer is going anywhere. But Puel can’t automatically give him a spot on the bench when he hasn’t done anything to earn it. He’s done well in the preseason, but those are friendlies. Puel has really only seen Tafer play three times.
This doesn’t mean that Tafer will stay in the CFAs for long. He could do what Benzema did, which was start out in the CFA, but be so impressive that he makes the jump to the pro team (Benzema didn’t play in many CFA matches either). For now though, I think it’s good that he remain #4, at least until he gets his feet wet.

This transfer will unfortunately be a mirrored-image of Santiago Ezquerro’s career at Barcelona.

Seriously, guys.
I CANNOT believe what I read everywhere, since Tuesday.
If I had never seen Piquionne playing, I would think that he is the worst striker on the world !!!
I think you are ALL losing temper with this guy !
I agree he’s not Eto’o or Drogba, but, seriously ! Let’s face it.
He’s our #3 striker ! And we even have Tafer has a number “3 bis”. He really do not deserve so much hate.
I’m scared about what I read on olweb forum. People are like saying they will whisttle him when he’ll get on the pitch !! But who is he ? Oussama Ben Laden ?
Nobody let him just ONE chance to prove he has his place in the team (I REPEAT, as a #3 !!). That’s not like if JMA selled Benzema to buy him. He cost less than 5 millions, that’s like nothing for us.
What do we have to lose ? Except Baros ? Seriously, is Piq’ really worst than Baros ? He’s at least the same player, surely stronger.
When Piquionne played with ASSE, I remember OL’s supporter wanting him so much. Now, that’s the same player, he’s not a 42 yo guy who cannot even run ! He had a bad year with Monaco, all right. Each players have that kind of problems.
Piquionne always wanted to play for OL. How many player have you heard wanting so much coming here ?
I read supporters complaining about players who prefer money than shirt loving. So ? Know what you want !I’m really TERRIFIED about everybody’s reaction. He’s a kind of striker we don’t have. Physical, and like Inara said, older than everybody else. That’s important in our so young team !
Please, please, please !!!
Just wait to see what he can do for us !
Did you really expect Eto’o as a number 3 here ???I don’t know if he will help us this year. The only thing I know is that if he feels anybody like him, anybody trust him… he CANNOT be as good as he used to be.
So please, you can be sceptikal. But don’t be narrow.
Help him. Help OL.Posted from

I think he’s an alright signing. A good tactical sub for benzema in some physical matches. He, in my opinion, is a better back up than Baros.

alright JO, i’ll give him a chance, plus im a patient person lol. But he’s gonna have to earn my support :).

I agree with you Jo. It is funny to see how we were all eager to see him come to Lyon 2 years ago, and now we just don’t want him near Fourviere.
I find it strange you all say that Tafer is 4th striker now. Did we transfer Baros???? I actually believe we could still have the option to play in 4-4-2 If we have Baros (who plays so much better alongside another striker). We could almost make pairs (Benzema - Baros) and (Fred - Piquionne). We have soo much quality in depth. I mean look at the two first teams we could have:Lloris
Clerc - Cris - Boumsong - Grosso
Govou - Toulalan - Juninho - Delgado
Benzema - BarosVercoutre
Reveillere - Paillot - Mensah - ???
Keita - Makoun - Ederson - Kallstrom
Fred - PiquionneIt is scary to see I couldn’t even fit in Bodmer (although he could have gone in defense in the 2nd team), Pjanic and Santos.
We definitely have a too crowded midfield.Posted from

Yes, I was thinking to myself that I never saw so much bad comments for a player who has just signed with Lyon.
And by the way, Fred Piquionne is born on 8th December ! That’s for sure a sign he had to be lyonnais

I’d like to clarify that I didn’t want Piquionne back then either. Not because of his qualities as a player, but I’m worried he’ll be a locker room cancer. He has like the worst history when it comes to getting along with his managers and fellow teammates. Lyon have so many problems in that arena that I’d like a player who would sit on the bench and keep quiet, at least for his first year.
As for the Tafer thing, Lacombe said that Lyon would be trying to find Baros a new club. Assuming they don’t bring in any other strikers, it looks like Tafer has to be #4. He’d be the only other striker on a pro-contract since none of the other CFA kids are pro yet.

I didnt want Piquonne back then either. Ive never wanted him. He is a trouble maker, and his goal totals never impressed me. You say he is older then most of our players so he will bring experience? What experience? Has ever played in the CL? Has he ever won a title? He has played for Nimes, Rennes, and Les Verts semi-succesfully and Monaco very poorly. So maybe he has some Ligue 1 experience, but is that what we lack? We need more CL experience, and he does not bring that. So it is a poor signing, because even though he is the third striker, Baros has more CL experience, and experience with the team.

Piquionne is our 3rd striker. He probably will never play.
We don’tr car he hPosted from

(sorry…)
We don’t care he has no CL experience. I was talking about LIFE experience, something Lloris, Ederson, Benz… don’t have. It’s important in the locker room. More important than CL experience for a player who will not play.
You really think we could have a 3rd striker with CL experience, who will be quietly sitting on the bench ??Posted from

-

Piquonne could be a posion on the locker room, so I would hold your judgement on his life experience. And yes, we could find a 3rd striker with CL exerience, if you want a calm older head that wouldnt be to hard to find. A 30+ year old with CL experience, hmmm maybe a Crespo or a Pagis or Saha (a little younger then 30) would be just fine.

(Hello everyone, im a long time lurker and, since this is my first post, i wanted to tell you guys that i really enjoy reading your comments. Inara, your blog is the best place to get information on my favourite club, thank you for that, you trully are doing an amazing job.)
I think we shouldnt be dissapointed that the club bought Piquionne instead of some world-class striker, atm this investment doesnt make sense since we have a one-year contract with Fred, a great player who has no transfer value for us. Id rather see Lyon use Fred one more season (he didnt exactly gave us a choice there)and then look for a real long-term solution alongside benz.Posted from

Thanks so much for the kind words, Muco! We’re always happy to have another OL fan around here, and I hope you drop by with comments more ofen!
I’m sure the club will use Fred, in fact, I think that’s why they also got Piquionne. That means that Fred is still the #2 striker. Lyon got Piquionne because he would be seeing mostly bench time as the #3. I’m still pissed at Fred about his contract though.

I think that you are right about Fred being the obvious second choice this season, i didnt mean to imply that Piquionne would have that spot. Im just saying that the contract thing puts the club in a horrible situation: we cant afford to have fred+a world class striker and we cant sell him either. Keeping him and adding a cheap, ok-striker is the best we can do imho.

Corey : You really think Crespo or Saha would have accept to be benched all time, as a 3rd striker in LYON ?
I don’t think so.
And concerning Pagis, to me he is far not better than Piquionne.Posted from
