Grass Roots Recruiting
By: Inara | November 30th, 2007By mid-November, transfer speculation is normally furious as newspapers wonder who will be entering and exiting the Stade de Gerland during the winter mercato. Last year, names like David Trezeguet, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, and Nicolas Anelka were bandied about on a daily basis.
But this year, Lyon are taking a different approach. They aren’t looking for the tested and tried. They aren’t looking for Balloon D’Or candidates. Instead, they are looking for future investments and backups. And this time, they are taking their search to “obscure” clubs such as Cruz Azul and FC Zurich. Not that these clubs are actually obscure, but we French tend to be elitist.
So who is on Bernard Lacombe’s list?
Cesar “Chelito” Delgado of Cruz Azul. Chelito is an Argentine striker who is on the fringes of the national team. From what I understand, he’s considered overrated at times, and at 26, he might be too old to make the jump to Europe. But that was the age Juninho, Fabio Santos, and Cris came over from Brazil, so what do I know.
Cesar Villaluz of Cruz Azul. Villaluz is a star in the making. A midfielder, he’s hella talented and turned in some great performances during the U17 World Cup. Naturally Arsenal have their greedy eyes on him already, but Villaluz could be the answer to Juninho’s eventual retirement. But that’s what they said about Renato Augusto, so I’m not going to get my hopes up.
Rodrigo Palacio of Boca Juniors. This rumor has quieted down in recent weeks, and for that I’m glad. Boca is asking for 15m+, which is too much for someone who will be playing second fiddle to Karim Benzema. This year, Palacio hasn’t done well anyway, so he’s the riskiest buy on this list (plus he’s 26 and has a rat-tail).
Ezequiel Lavezzi of Napoli. I’m not sure if Lyon are still actively interested in this guy. He’s talented and has attracted the notice of other big clubs, and from what little I’ve seen of him, he might not be a good fit for Lyon.
Yassine Chikhaoui of FC Zurich. He’s another young talent, and at 21 years of age, he’s still young enough to be molded to Lyon’s specifications. A striker, he played really well against Toulouse today in the UEFA Cup, and rumors are that Lyon are prepared to offer 5 million euros for his services.
Jaime Gavilan of Valencia. He worked his way up through Valencia’s youth ranks and is considered to be a talent, but he’s having a hard time getting first team action because of Vicente and David Silva. He’s an old fashioned left winger, and Lyon are considered to be the front runners of his signature.
Now, you’ll notice two things from this list. First of all, none of these players are Brazilian. That’s a big shock because I can’t remember the last time an Argentine/Mexican/Spaniard played at Lyon. Secondly, these are all attackers. I would have preferred to see some young, promising defenders, but we have a few more weeks before the transfer window opens. I’ll be patient.
Another thing to keep in mind is that for any of these players to arrive, someone has got to leave. Since most of these players hold non-EU status, either the club is expecting Cris’s Portuguese citizenship to come through or one of the Brazilians will leave. So let’s go over the most likely departures.
Milan Baros - Probable. I think this is obvious. He’s been “injured” quite conveniently for the past few matches, and though both Baros and Lyon are denying a winter departure, it’s looking more and more like it’s on the cards. It also doesn’t help that his speed off the pitch isn’t matched by his speed on the pitch.
Fabio Grosso - Possible. Again, both the player and the club are denying winter movement, but Grosso has failed to impress for Lyon. He is improving, but he’s not the quality we need back there. Word on the street is that he’s having a hard time adjusting to France. Aulas is stubborn and likes the idea of having a World Cup winner on the squad, but I think it’s time to let him go. Valencia are interested in trading Gavilan + cash for Grosso. I say go for it.
Nadir Belhadj - Possible. He’s a good player. Very good. But for some reason, he hasn’t inspired the confidence of Alain Perrin, so he’s rusty from not playing. He’s been unhappy, and given his talent, he has quite a few suitors.
Fred - Possible. He’s been out injured for an awfully long time, and it’s been hard for him to return to his form of early last year. It also doesn’t help that he’s lost his starting place to a 19 year old. But he’s improving, and Perrin has vowed to be patient until Fred starts scoring again.
Sidney Govou - Unlikely. The claims of Govou’s agent that he wants to play for Roma had me raising my eyebrows. We all know Sid. Every year he makes noises about leaving, but he really just wants fatter contracts. He turned down a very good offer from Atletico Madrid last year, and I don’t see him wanting to go to Roma. Govou has been at Lyon for his entire life, and it’s more likely he’ll end his career here. Unless of course a club like Barcelona were interested. But Govou is too inconsistent to get picked up by a giant like that.
Looking over this list, I think I’d be happy to see Baros leave and perhaps a young striker coming in. But that’s it. Otherwise, for the first time in a long time, Lyon are set offensively, and given our means, the club can’t get any better. Our midfield is one of the better ones in Europe, and even if Real Madrid and Juventus offered Mahamadou Diarra and Tiago back for free, I would say no.
Defense is a worry, but it’s too late to bring in a defender because Cris will be ready to return and Gregory Coupet should be fully reinstated by January. I would like to see a better left back come in, however. If Rangers beat us again, we could take theirs. Or we could wait a few more years and get Eric Abidal again, who wants to end his career at OL.
Blegh. Someone tell him that we don’t like whiny bitches at Lyon. Thanks.

Juninho is not taking a EU spot anymore, Cris’ could be solved soon, and Lyon were granted an exception to pick up Cleber Anderson.
So I don’t think the EU spots are a problem for one or two moves.
Lyon need to make a move for offensive players because as we saw this week, once Benzema is injured and Fred ineffective, the only other player that’s a striker (and since Perrin doesn’t use Bodmer there) is Loic Remy. Not CL caliber.Bodmer could leave. But someone I could see leaving this winter is in fact Kim Kallstrom.

Ben Arfa is going to leave Lyon sooner than Benzema. Lyon should try to get Giovanni Dos Santos in place of Ben Arfa. Bodmer should leave, he’s given 0 play time which sucks. Keita needs more time on the field he is the most skilled player out there, he fucked up Barca in the few minutes he was on the field. PLAY KEITA, PLAY KEITA!! GODAMN, is that so hard to do.

I had forgotten about that extension. So that means we have one slot open (or two, depending on Cris). If Fred can pick up his form by winter, I don’t think Lyon need a big attacker or winger. Maybe a backup or a young player.
Ara, Lyon tried to get Dos Santos last year - we offered 20m for him, but Barca wouldn’t budge. I’m pretty sure we’ll see more of Keita because I don’t think Govou’s super form will last much longer.
I don’t know if Kallstrom will leave this winter just because he’s cup tied, and he wants CL football. Plus Lyon don’t really let key players go in the middle of winter. It’s just not their style.
FYI, Milan is now sniffing around Jeremy Toulalan. Why don’t they try to get a DM in their own damn league?

Perhaps this is shameless self promotion but if anyone is interested in learning more about Chikhaoui and, more importantly, seeing some great highlights then check out the links below from offside affiliated Tunisia World Cup Blog. The offensive midfielder might be the best product we’ve ever produced and he’s only 21. I think he could definitely contribute at Lyon. Barca, Juve, and Ajax are also reportedly interested amongst a host of other clubs from Germany and France. I think that price tag will end up being more than 5 million!

Thanks for the links, Rami. Personally speaking, I haven’t seem Chikhaoui play more than a handful of times, so I’d like to learn more about him. Five million is the price quoted in transfer rags, his value will surely have been driven up by the quality of clubs interested.
So he’s an offensive midfielder? I looked at wikipedia (which isn’t always reliable, I know, but it’s all I could find at the moment) and they say he’s a striker. I personally would prefer an offensive midfielder since Lyon will eventually lose either Kallstrom or Bodmer by the end of this year.

Hey Inara, I rely on Wiki at my own peril too sometimes hehe. Fair mistake but its not really a mistake as he can play that position sometimes. He had a pretty miserable game when he was unexpectedly called upon to replace our Brazilian born center forward Dos Santos. So maybe that has a hand in the misconception. I can affirm that his true position is offensive midfielder and this is the position he’s playing in on our national team. Thing about him is, he plays excellent for Club and not so excellent for country (He still hasn’t scored a goal in our selection. mind you, he doesn’t have THAT many games under his belt).
Plus it’s my opinion that Lemerre severely constricts his movements by playing him in a rigid system that gives him no space to run where he wants and create at his will. You’ll see in the highlights what I mean. The kid has a future though. He’s already won almost everything there is to win in Tunis and in Africa (with the Champions League title the only one that eluded him- Etoile du Sahel, his former team, took care of that this season though!)
Thanks for the reply Inara, I’m a big fan of your blog. Enjoy the clips, he’s got some spectacular moves. I read somewhere, I think maxifoot, that Lyon is looking at him as a long term replacement for the amazing Juninho. Big shoes to fill if you ask me, but with time he’ll be up to the task. That if you guys get him of course!

i neglected to mention that the game he played badly in was our first game in the World Cup against Saudi Arabia. God, just thinking of it pisses me off. Anyways, not Chikhaoui’s fault as far as I’m concerned. He wasn’t ready to fill in the shoes of the then injured Dos Santos at that point in his career and I think it was unfair of Lemerre to put him in that position. Anyways, enough from me and my Tunisia musings…

Allegedly, we’re interested in Chikhaoui as well- our manager signed him for Zurich and then left for Hertha. Das Bild says he’s too expensive for us now, though (and after taking Lulu, they aren’t too fond of us, either).

Rami, he looks very promising from the vids you provided. He might play in the Swiss league, but talent is talent no matter where it’s found. Since you are more up to date on his info, what club has been linked with him the most? In France, I believe Marseille is also interested. And do you think he’s ready for a move to a more difficult league? In general, I’m all for young prospects staying at their club until they’re ready to leave.
Abby, if Juventus and Barca are also interested, Lyon probably can’t afford him either. And even if we could afford him, we’d probably lose out to them anyway. Lyon are still small fish in some ways.

You ask some very pertinent questions Inara. In his last season in Tunisia the clubs that were most linked with him were French ones. Marseille featured very prominently and Lens and Le Mans were reportedly keeping tabs. It seemed like he would end up at Marseille but out of the blue we heard that he signed for FC Zurich. That decision kind of blindsided a lot of people in the press who weren’t expecting him to go that route.
The way I understand it, he decided to go to a relatively low profile European league in order to acclimate himself to the continent on his own terms and be under less pressure. It’s not that he’s soft but Massaer and I were talking about this the other day, you know how it is when you get to a club like Marseille… If he had a few bad outings and people underestimated him or started booing him or what not it could have really hurt his confidence and stunted his development in the process. It’s possible he wasn’t thinking this far in depth but it’s how I rationalize his decision.
Anyways, thats the background info. For the past few months the clubs that have been heavily linked with him are Bayer Leverkusen and Ajax and now most recently, your very own Lyon. Leverkusen has the advantage of having one of our internationals in its starting lineup (Karim Haggui in defense) so that could potentially be a a nice selling point. Then I was reading that Ajax is sure to let Huntelaar leave and was looking for a solid replacement. I don’t see Chikhaoui as being able to effectively fill that void since he’s not the out and out striker that the Dutchman is… They might go for Amine Chermiti (a 20 year old tunisian striker who is doing very well right now and will be playing in the Club World Championships next weekend against Pachuca of Mexico). Chermiti is more of a pure striker but Chikha seems more technically adept.
I think that at this point Juventus and Barca are just throwing their name into the mix to indicate that they are following him but i wouldn’t consider them to be in pole position by any means. With their type of money though you never know what will happen… In the tunisian newspapers they seem to be alluding to the fact that Lyon are ahead of everyone because they’ve actually put a sum of money on the table (the 5 million euros you cited in the post). Massaer actually told me that he heard on RTCI that the directors would probably be pissed he played such a good game in a UEFA cup tie because it might raise his price tag. Right now you have a legit chance of landing him but there’s a lot of time from here until the end of the season. It’s very hard to guess how things will turn out. I mean he already made one unexpected decision by going to Switzerland so clearly he’s not just thinking about money or prestige(unlike a lot of players from our country!). All factors indicate that he actually thinks about playing time and a solid career path that will help him achieve his lofty goals.
I struggle to see him in a Barca shirt to be honest. I know he’s good but I think that might be too big of a leap this early. Udinese has been cited as a target also and damn near the entire Bundesliga is dying to get him.
Finally, whether he is ready for a new challenge or not… Well, at the beginning of the season I thought he would need two years in the Swiss league but he’s ahead of the curve a lot of people set for him. Not only is he the unquestionable star of the team and a fan favorite but he’s already been labeled the best player in that entire league by all the pundits. He’s definitely ready for France or the Netherlands at the end of this year. Plus those are two leagues that are well known for nurturing young talent. The spanish league is suited to his style but that might be a few years down the road. Sorry I don’t have real answers just theories! It’s always a guessing game in these matters as you know.
So to summarize, as of right now Lyon has a legitimate chance of nabbing him. Leverkusen are the main competitors as far as I’m concerned. Their fondness for North African talent has increased as they had a strong presence in South Korea during the U17 World Cup this summer where our young boys showed true promise by winning all three of their group matches in astonishing style.
Sorry for my rambling writing style. It’s 3:35 on a friday night and I’ve been drinking a little. Time for me to get some water in my system and pass out!

Oh wow, thanks Rami
Lyon are normally cheap bastards, but they will lay down the money if they think Chikhaoui is the real deal, and it looks like he is. Do you think Chikhaoui would like to play for Lyon? To be honest, Lyon isn’t exactly a favored destination for a lot of players.
It sounds like he’s a well adjusted player who has his head screwed on straight, and while Lyon have no members of the Tunisian NT to offer, there is Hatem Ben Arfa, French born but Tunisian. With Karim Benzema, I think Chikhaoui would make an awesome part of the teen superstar club at Lyon.
Is Chikhaoui looking for a winter or summer move?

I’m not sure how badly he wants to play for Lyon. It’s hard to gauge his interest at this point as he’s not really the type of dude to comment on his situation when he’s currently committed to FC Zurich.
I don’t see Chikhaoui leaving in the winter. I think he wants a solid year in the Swiss league and I’m sure FC Zurich share that sentiment. His stock will only get higher with time. Especially if his team makes a good run in the UEFA Cup.
It’s true you guys have Ben Arfa but a lot of people from Tunis don’t really identify with the kid. I’ve read on some forums that people were really pissed he didn’t choose Tunisia over France. Frankly I think those thought are out of line. Ben Arfa is more French than Tunisian and picking the team with a more illustrious history makes complete sense, especially since he was formed at Clairefontaine…

Let’s see : Ben Arfa is born in France, went to school in France, learnt football in France, went to INF Clairefontaine, went to Lyon, both french places, and for some reason, he chooses to represent french.
Yeah, I think it’s fair to say he’s more french than tunisian.

Evilo, I agree with you but I think what pissed some people off is that when the Tunisian federation offered him a place in the World Cup, he didn’t say “no I’m French” or “Thank you but no thanks because my priority is the French NT” but he said “I can’t make that decision right now, thank you but let me think about it.” So he inadvertently gave some Tunisians (and the federation) hope that he would choose them when in fact he had no intent whatsoever of doing so.
Some people interpreted is disrespectful and wanted him to just be more up front about his allegiances. I’m not with that train of thought… He’s a great prospect and I hope he goes far. Just not as far as Chikhaoui does in the long run

I can understand why some Tunisians would be mad at him, but in all fairness, he was only 19 when the WC came around. Right now FIFA requires you choose your national affiliation by the age of 21, though many think 21 is too young to make that sort of decision. Also, I think Ben Arfa was keeping his options open in case he never had the chance to play in the NT. Kind of like what happened with Freddi Kanoute.
At least Ben Arfa didn’t embarrass your NT coach by pulling a Gonzalo Higuain, who actually used Domenech to further his appeal to big European clubs, and then chose Argentina, which is what the logical outcome was I guess.

Raimi : absolutely true, but then again, he didn’t know if he would be given a chance with the french NT. In that case, playing for Tunisia was for him better than nothing. Classless maybe, but not as classless as a federation approaching a 19 year old phenom struggling hoping he would feel a tiny bit tunisian.

WHAT LYON REALLY NEED IS A DECENT STRIKER[UNDER 26 AND WITH A VALUE OF OVER 7MILL],ALSO A DECENT CENTRE BACK AND GET RID OF ALL THE CRAP PLAYERS LIKE ANDERSON WHO WOULDNT EVEN GET IN TO THE AJACCIO TEAM PROBS

You can add Bayern to the serious contenders for Chikhaoui’s services (l’equipe). According to Eurosport his transfer value has risen to 9 million euros. a good way to keep tabs on him is this unofficial blog someones got going:
