Is Barcelona on Crack?

By: Inara | June 8th, 2007

abidalThree years ago, Lyon purchased Eric Abidal from Lille for a fee of €8.5million.

Three days ago, Barcelona submitted a €9million offer to Lyon for Abidal.

Were Barcelona’s directors smoking something when they submitted their offer? If that’s the case, I want some of what they’re having.

Is Abidal worth Aulas’s €20million price tag? Probably not. But umm, hello! Abidal is a starter for one of the best national teams in the world, has tons of experience in Europe, is one of Lyon’s most consistent performers, and was a World Cup finalist.

I don’t think paying €13-15million for his services is unreasonable. Barcelona’s valuation of Abidal - that his value went up only half a million euros in three years - is offensive to both Lyon and the player.

Obviously, Barcelona aren’t really interested in Abidal. First they offer Saviola - a free agent - in exchange, and then they offer pocket change.

Barcelona can’t even guarantee Abidal a starting spot. So if they’re trying to get a back up LB, then why in the world are they trying to get Abidal? If they want to be cheap, then they should shop accordingly. And if Barcelona have better options like Daniel Alves, they should sign him instead and stop pissing off Lyon with offers they know won’t be considered. In fact,
I dare Barcelona to find a player of Abidal’s caliber for €9million.

Abidal wants to leave the club, but there are other suitors who will pay the minimum transfer fee. Aulas won’t take a loss on one of his best players.

Barcelona really lost my respect here. Especially by offering an exchange between one of the best left DF players and a player ending his contract.

Barca prolly thought they had the transfer “in the pocket” after Abidal showed his interest, but really acting such a foolish way is ridiculous.

Barcelona hope that after how Abidal showed he absolutely wants to go there, Abidal and Lyon began a “bras de fer” like Essien or Diarra… for such this ridiculous price.
But Abidal understood it, and chose Milan. That really a lack of respect for OL and Abidal.
    9 million !!!

I hope Abidal goes to Real just so that he can play against Barca and their team of idiotic management.

Abidal was stupid when he ran his mouth off in the press, which showed everyone how he wanted to leave so much. That definitely subtracts from his value. But even considering, nine million was too low.

Malouda is being a lot smarter about his transfer because he didn’t commit himself publicly to any club. So Lyon can afford to ask for a higher fee for him.

I really think it’s one of those “we’ll throw some crap up against the wall and see if it sticks” type offers, because they’re going after Chivu very hard now - they’re already having contract talks. So I think they made that offer as a way of seeing if Lyon are dumb enough to take it and they can get him at great value.

I hope so. I don’t want to see Abidal in Barcelona at all. I’d rather he go to Milan or *gasp* even Real.

That’s a fact. Abidal is a WONDERFUL player… but not very smart.

Barcelona have a superiority complex here, they think that because he plays in France he wont cost much, but look at a majority of the players lyon has sent overseas, they have been over valued probably but still, expensive. Barcelona’s technical directors are stalling cause I think Frankie R wont have a job if he looses the title. That and they are incompetent when it comes to players. Ronaldinho was l ucky, Messi was a gem, but letting Fabregas, Pique, Merida go and possibly loosing Krkic Dos Santos etc. because they are too stuborn to promote them to the first team, now thats just retarded.

Barcelona need to work on their people management skills. They’ll be lucky if they can hang onto their star players this summer.

And let’s be honest here. Other than Abidal, what other talented player has been making noises about going there recently?

No one because the “magical” two years(really they never had much of a challenege from anyone) are over with and Barcelona will do well to keep hold of their key men and sign others. I cant wait to see were Barcelona u-20 is playing in the next few years, they all look promising. Then again, how many Barcelona youth teamers make it to the first team.

There are crazy rumors of Henry signing up with Barca, but I won’t believe it until it’s on ESPN.
