Jean II Makoun to Lyon Would Be a Dream Come True

By: Inara | May 14th, 2008

jeanmakoun.jpgOn my list of players that I want transfered to Lyon, Jean II Makoun is #2 (you all know who #1 is). He’s a midfield beast who has his share of technical qualities, and he scares the shit out of any player.

He’s so awesome. I love watching him play. I love his name. I even love his crazy hair. Actually, I just love him, period.

But you know what I’d love even more? Makoun in a Lyon kit. And I know that I’m not the only one.

Word on the street is that Lyon will be moving for Makoun this summer. The club learned (the hard way) that one defensive midfielder isn’t enough (Jeremy Toulalan is practically divine, but not even he’s unbreakable). In fact, Lyon were interested in Makoun for the last two years, but Lille were unwilling to part with him. He’s an integral part of Claude Puel’s team, which is why, even with the loss of other important players, they may end up in Europe anyway.

Makoun could have moved to better pastures last year, but he is extremely loyal to Puel, and knowing that Lille would not be able to survive without him after they lost all those other players, he put off his own plans to stay. However, Lille are now willing to listen to offers. Given that Lille’s owner, Michel Seydoux, is the brother of Jerome Seydoux, one of Lyon’s biggest shareholders, they’ve learned enough foot business from Jean-Michel Aulas to know when to sell a player.

makounlyon2.jpgOf course, Makoun is an established talent and has his share of suitors. Juventus want him, Manchester United and Barcelona are long time admirers, and Arsenal have targeted him as a potential replacement for Mathieu Flamini. Additionally, other EPL clubs interested are Tottenham, Manchester City, and Newcastle. Within France, Monaco and Marseille, along with Lyon, are also keeping tabs on him.

But apparently, Makoun wouldn’t mind moving to a bigger French club (which almost always means Lyon). In a recent interview, he said that he spoke with Lyon officials (which means that Lille must have given him permission to do so) and that he thinks that this transfer is a very real possibility.

The media are reporting that his transfer fee would be around €14m (Makoun’s buyout clause). But since Lyon always pay Lille extra (the brotherhood connection), I’m guessing it will be around €15m. That’s a lot of money, but Makoun is quality and definitely one of the most underrated midfielders around.

He had this to say about Lyon:

“It would be a great pleasure to join a club of that standing. I’ve been in contact with them and they have also talked with my agent. It’s a really great option for me. I love that club, and it would be really wonderful to play for that team.”

Just imagine Makoun and Toulalan playing together. Oh the beauty.

Although, if Makoun does come, and if Lyon also sign the #1 player on my list, we might have to change the name of the team to Olympique Lillyonnice.

Yeah, it’s hard to say what he’ll choose. It might also have to do with how much playing time and money these clubs offer. But at least he’s willing to consider a French club, which is a huge step in the right direction. Even two years ago, his answer would have been totally different.

I’m going to cross my fingers. :)

And congrats to Anthony Mounier making the Toulon squad. Going to be a great tournament. I went in 2002 when I was 16 when England and Brazil were in it. Nice to see the world’s future stars. Hopefully, Mounier can show off his potential.

    Bye Bye Kallstrom then.
Lille have the est midfield today with Makoun, Cabaye and mavuba in my opinion. But damn Lyon would have the best midefield on paper inEUrope next year with Juninho, Keita, fabio santos, Makoun, Bodmer, Toulalan, etc…
    This would be insane!

    ^LOL, witty.

I do agree with Magnusson though. If we sign Makoun (and with Ederson arriving), I definitely can’t see Kim starting anymore. But will definitely make a much stronger team, no doubt.

Salieri, your team is very exciting. It is interesting to see that many of us would like to see a formation without proper wingers (we rarely include Govou or Keita in our starting line ups).
I do think Lyon has to use players who can play both center and wing (Ben Arfa is perfect for that). But then again who am I to talk about tactics while there are some professionnals in charge.
Still, your line up is very exciting.

Anybody else not entirely convinced by Ederson?? Seems like he’s been over shadowed by Wendel for most of the season.

Ush: You can look at it this way. Wendel has never played so well as he has been these last six months while Ederson is definitely not in good form in that same time frame. But prior to that, I thought he was playing really well and one of the reasons (the other being Lloris of course) that they were likely European candidates in the first part of the year. But since he signed his contract with OL, his mind has been elsewhere. Regardless, he’ll do well for us. Playing amongst better players would be a good thing for him. I think he’s terrific, but some think he’s overrated. We’ll see though.

Also, L’Equipe are reporting that Pjanic’s transfer should take place in the next few days. Estimated price is 7 million for a five year contract.

Except that Ederson was excellent in his 3 last games.
Don’t forget in scored 2 times in a row and made a decisive pass :)
Ederson is back, my friends !

POL you’re absolutely right, but despite Hatem being able to play on the left wing (and Honorato on the right wing, I think he did so many times) I am afraid Pjanic will be bought to compensate Ben Arfa’s departure.

By the way Kadlek could be a very interesting buy, he has just been selected in Czech Republic’s Euro’s list of 23 players.

Salieri, I think many of us have lost all illusions on Ben Arfa. Inara wrote posts about the possible transfer from Lloris or Makoun to Lyon, but she could also have written one about Hatem Ben Arfa…
I can already imagine her post : “Because of the baboon leading the team, we are going to lose a wonder kid… aka devolution”.

Pride of Lyon, have you been peeking at the draft of my next post? :P Because there are several mentions of Perrin and primates, often times linked together.

I did write a Ben Arfa post a few days ago, but since then, the rumors seem to have gotten more heated. I am tempted to write another post, but I might as well wait a few more days when we’ll know more.

I admit, I’m a Ben Arfa fan to the point where you could accuse me of being blind to his faults. I can get very critical of nearly every other player on the team, including Benzema and Juninho, but Ben Arfa I’m always behind 100 percent, right or wrong. Don’t know why that is, but I would be devastated to see him play for another team, even though I know Lyon can survive without him.

Also, am I the only one who feels like Lyon will be married to the 4-3-3 forever? We’ve had three different coaches from very different backgrounds and experiences come in and use that formation because despite their efforts, the players couldn’t - or didn’t want to - adapt to another system. Not that I want the 4-3-3 forever, but besides Benzema, no other player seems to like even something as simple as a 4-4-2.

Because 4-4-2 wouldn’t work. No matter how they play, Fred and Benzema will never be able to cooperate with each other. It will be forever 4-3-3 or 4-5-1. Also, another reason for the 4-3-3 is because we have never been able to establish a potent strikeforce. Other than that year with Anderson and Marlet. It’s just been one great one and that’s it. Caveglia, Anderson, then we went dormant for awhile with the likes of Nilmar, Carew, Baros, Frau, Elber, and Luyindula (he did have one good season). Now we have Benzema (no disrespect to Fred). Also the 4-3-3 is beginning to become synonymous with football. Chelsea’s been using it since the Mourinho days and even Man U are adapting to it.

I’m kinda hoping we get him at Barca, Toure could use some help. But him and Toulalan would make a solid midfield for you guys.

You know, I heard that Lyon were interested in him. Not surprised to see him refuse though. Nowadays a man would have to be insane or supremely self-confident at taking over Lyon.

I don’t think there is any other option that to move to a 4-5-1 or 4-2-2. There will be alot of disgruntled players, especially if Ben Arfa stays/Pjanic is signed/ Makoun is purchased, and/or if Remy comes back.
Lyon is in an akward postion as a club: it is attracting very talented players; will be loaded with talent next season, yet it is not at the level of a Real Madrid, where talented players don’t mind sitting on the bench. Lyons must advance higher in the CL in order to insure that talented players will still come even though their playing time may be limited.

Lloris about to sign to Milan. That’s a shame. How can we be so dumb and try to extend Coupet’s contract again and again, while an incredible young goal keeper could play?
