Juventus Offer Player+Cash for Tiago
By: Inara | June 14th, 2007
Never doubt the negotiating powers of Jean-Michel Aulas. Only he could possibly sell Tiago for €20million.
I briefly talked about this yesterday, but now that details have leaked out, we can decide if Juve should be shown the door the way Barcelona was.
Despite being a Chelsea reject, Tiago has his pick of clubs, with Barcelona, Milan, and Juventus trailing behind him (so is Fiorentina, but I’m going to ignore that one).
Purchased from Chelsea for €10million, Tiago came to Lyon, and not only was he able to replace Michael Essien successfully, he gave Lyon’s midfield an elegance that it had been lacking. He was one of Houllier’s favorite players and could be trusted for his tidy performances every week.
While this type of player (read: boring) doesn’t exactly capture the imaginations of the fans, it does make him very appreciated by managers across Europe.
So let’s go over the offers so far, shall we?
Barcelona want Tiago, but due to their screw-up with the Eric Abidal situation, I imagine Lyon aren’t that keen to negotiate. And unlike Abidal, Tiago doesn’t have a hard-on to play for them.
Milan are also interested in Tiago, but due to the congested nature of their midfield (Pirlo, Kaka, Gattuso, Seedorf, Ambrosini, Gourcuff, and maybe Ronaldinho and Emerson), Tiago would be really stupid to go there unless he wants to play for Milan’s B team.
So in come Juventus. Tiago has stated that his preference is for Juve, with Claudio Ranieiri also saying that he wants Tiago at all costs (when will people ever learn? Do not say “at all costs” to Aulas). According to various media reports, Juventus don’t want to meet Lyon’s €20million fee, but to bring the price down, they are willing to offer a player + cash.
Which players, you ask?
Either David Trezeguet or Mauro Camoranesi, both of whom nearly signed for Lyon last summer until Juventus forced them to stay, thereby causing an entire season of bitterness for the pair.

You would think the first option is the most appealing. After all, Lyon’s lack of a star attacker is one of the main reasons they don’t get respect on the European scene, and despite Lyon not being able to match his current salary with Juve, I feel like Trezeguet would sign for Lyon anyway as long as the salary cut isn’t too big (for Trezeguet’s other options, Laurie has more info).
However, Aulas stated today that Lyon aren’t interested in Trezeguet or any other striker. But you should take his words with a grain of salt - rumors are floating around that Lyon might loan out Baros in order to free up space for another attacker.
The second option is to offer Camoranesi, who is hella pissed at Juventus and wants to leave. I thought Camo was heading to Roma (I’ll have to rely on Chris for further clarification), but he may agree to come to Lyon instead, where he’ll get the contract he feels like he deserves. Also to be taken into consideration is that unlike Trez, Camo doesn’t have a lot of options at the moment.
Which do you think is better? Trez+cash or Camo+cash?
If Baros is loaned out, then I wouldn’t mind having Trezeguet. If Baros isn’t, then I’d rather just have the cash, as opposed to having one more player Lyon don’t really need.

The only people who have mentioned interest in Roma bringing in Camoranesi are he and his agent. Totti wanted him last season and I can’t imagine Perrotta and De Rossi wouldn’t wanted to be reunited (Perrotta and Camo were great together on the wings in Berlin because they could defend while the fullbacks overlapped) but I don’t see it happening. He makes 3-3.5m now with Juve and asked for more lira, the Bianconeri aren’t ready to open up the checkbook for him. Roma’s salary cap is 2.5m per season. Simple mathematics say it won’t happen, even though he supposedly said he’s OK with that cap (I don’t buy it for a second).
Also, even though he was born in Argentina he chose to play for the Azzurri for “football reasons,” and after the WC stated he still felt “Argentinian” and dedicated the victory to his buddies back home. He seems like a perfect Aulas-type. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him at Lyon. At this point I’d say it’s likely - especially if Malouda goes(he can play either wing), because I don’t know of anyone besides Juve who might pay off his demands in Serie A.

I’m having a hard time with your question because I can’t figure out what scoring 15 goals in Serie B is equivalent to. Will Trezeguet step right back into playing and scoring against upper-echelon teams, or will he struggle the way he’s struggled for France?
There’s a huge risk in taking on Trezeguet and all his baggage. If at 30 he can still be the Trezeguet of old, by all means sign him and loan out Baros. But if not…
The thing is, there’s no way to tell. I’d guess Camo would be more of a sure thing.

To me, Camoranesi would be a better choice. I really believe in our Fred, Benzema and Baros… so I don’t want a loan for Baros, and I don’t want Trezegoal because of Fred’s capacity of being angry about that, and so don’t play well…
And Camo can play on the left, even if he prefers the right side… He can do a turn over with Keita like Govou and Malouda did this season, during the match.Posted from

If Tiago leaves, Camoranesi could replace him in a 4-3-3 and there would be a turn over with bodmer.
As said Joffrey, if Trezeguet come, it’s not Baros who will have to leave but Fred who can’t stand to share time. And what about Benzema?
In my opinion, Camoranesi is a good choice however, what about Jonathan Zebina? We have only 3 central defenders and Zebina could have a turnover with squillaci-cris. Not sure that at thirteen Zebina would accept to share the time.

I dont want any of them, take the cash. Camo is a moody winer who always wants more money more playing time more tang whatever. Thats not Lyon’s family like team. Trez cant be alone, he needs a del piero to run around him and make him space, which in Lyon he would not have, unless Ben Arfa does that, which means switching the entire formation into a 4-4-2 which would see either Juninho or Bodmer on the left. Seeing as how Keita is more of a stiker then Govou, like wise for Ben Arfa with Malouda, I think we should be content with what he have. If you loan out Baros and get Trez I would say fine, but Fred and Benzema deserve to play more then Trez does right now.

Wait, can Camo play on either wing?
In any case, I’d rather have the cash as well, though I don’t see Lyon getting the full amount. It looks like Lyon really aren’t interested in Trezeguet. I’m glad to see that Perrin is being careful not to overload the manpower (which Houllier did too frequently).
However, I do like Trezeguet and wish we had space for him. As for Camo, I like him too, but only if he’s as good on the left than on the right. It also depends if he can handle coming to Ligue 1.

the cash. you may wonder what OL is going to do with all the plunder they’ve amassed already… the answer is build a stadium. 10M€ may not seem like much for a project like that, but go about buying real estate yourself and you’ll see that every little bit gives you more leverage. and getting OL-land built with a maximum of their own investment will put OL into a different orbit, where they will finally have the budget to play with the fat cats.

I’ve always wondered, France not being as hot for soccer as England and Spain, and the Lyon region definitely not a cauldron like Marseille, will Lyon be able to draw 60000 people every weekend? Let’s hope so!
Arsenal’s new stadium is always filling up, though they are still quite saddled with debt and can’t afford to spend much (Wenger has been downright stingy!)

Lyon is one of the top clubs in all of Europe, and it is only a matter of time before they win Champions Leaugue. We all know that Aulas’ goal is Champions Leaugue, and adding a player like Trezeguet would be a significant acquisition….however, with developping player such as Benzema, you almost come to the point if adding a player like Trezeguet is necessary. He has experience but his he worth it. Lyon is in a bind because it is now they need to make a serious run at Europe.

After Benzema’s performance this year, he’s more than ready to take on the responsibilities of playing for Lyon. If anything, I’m more worried about Fred and Baros delivering than Benzema!
But if there’s one quality that Trez has that OL’s other forwards don’t, it’s that he’s a poacher and is comfortable about the goal. He won’t create opportunities for himself but he’s great at finishing others. It’s the opposite with Lyon players. They create tons of opportunities but lack the composure to get the ball into the net.

That’s right… but Maybe that will come for Fred and co with their experience !
