Latest Transfer Humors

By: Inara | June 18th, 2007

The “June 30th” deadline is fast approaching, which is when Lyon are supposed to be finished with their mercato.

So here’s the latest in Lyon transfer funnies.

OUTGOING:

malouda* Both Chelsea and Liverpool have submitted offers for Florent Malouda. Liverpool is willing to spend €15m while Chelsea topped that with €21m. Take this with a grain of salt though - I can’t imagine Chelsea making a move for him unless Arjen Robben leaves for another club. Also, a Spanish club is interested in Malouda as well (Aulas didn’t specify which one - probably Madrid).

* Eric Abidal’s “open and shut” transfer to Spain has stalled. After Barcelona’s two failed bids, Abidal’s file is now closed. Aulas would prefer to get him to sign a contract extension since there is no better LB for Lyon than Abidal. However, Barcelona’s indifference was a ruse, and it turns out they are still interested. Barca could probably get him at €14-15m, which is actually a fair price (totally not Lyon’s style).

* Juventus are hot and heavy for Tiago (and so is Gigi Buffon). It’s not exactly clear what sort of deal they are hoping to make with Lyon (cash or player+cash), but Aulas has stated that Tiago can leave for €15m. Milan and Barcelona are fighting to sign him, and the deal could happen in the next couple hours.

* Though Werder Bremen and Juventus have been linked with Alou Diarra, Portsmouth is “in the driving seat” after offering €9m. I’m not sure why he wants to go to Pompey, but apparently he likes the EPL (and the paychecks). UPDATE: Diarra does not want to go to Pompey. He only wants to leave for a bigger club (that is, bigger than Lyon). Yeah, Alou. You’ll get sooo much playing time at Juve.

* Juventus also tried to pry away Cris until they realized that two to three transfers from Lyon would drain their entire summer budget.

* Lazio would like to fill the vacancy left by Massimo Oddo by poaching Francois Clerc. Keep dreaming, Lazio.

* Sylvain Wiltord will be leaving the club. I mentioned the Nino Ruckus a few weeks back (Wiltord and eight of his teammates had a hotel orgy party…that, and he got into a fight with Gregory Coupet after macking on his wife…but it’s all just idle gossip, and I have no confirmed sources whatsoever).

Says Jean-mimi:

“Sylvain will leave. He crossed the yellow line. We are not discussing a transfer with him but a departure. We could even cancel his contract.”

Ouch.

I feel like Wiltord’s partying ways are more of an official excuse to get him out of the club than anything else, especially since it hasn’t affected his performance on the pitch. If something did happen between Coupet and Nino, it explains why Coupet took an awfully long time before signing his contract extension (he “nearly” signed for West Ham). I’m not surprised that Aulas is pissed off. About ten years ago, Pascal Olmeta and his BFF Jean-Luc Sassus got into a fistfight after Sassus slept with Olmeta’s wife. End result: both got transferred the hell away from Lyon.

I don’t think Lyon will get rid of Wiltord the way PSG got rid of Vikash Dhorasoo, but it’s obvious that Aulas doesn’t want him on the team next year. It’s unfortunate because Wiltord has been an immense player for Lyon since he arrived from Arsenal. He’s one of the club’s most decisive players, and he’s a leader both on and off the pitch for Lyon and for the France NT.

* For today’s non-Lyon transfer rumor that’s too good to pass up, Juventus and Roma are in the race for Liverpool’s Craig Bellamy. Apparently, Roma are even willing to offer Stepover King Mancini in exchange. Haha, I guess those writers on Fleet Street had a little too much fun playing drunken scrabble. As if either of those clubs would go for the waste of space that is Bellamy. Bellamy would be a good signing should Juventus want the Serie C title to go along with their A’s and B.

INCOMING:

With three new players in the ranks (Belhadj, Bodmer, and Keita), Lyon are pretty much done with their mercato. However, there might be one more signing - THE MYSTERY PLAYER. I asked my readers who they thought he could be, and everyone had different suggestions! Aulas’s tactic of confusing us with 100000 fake tracks has obviously worked. Lyon’s been recently linked with midfielders Mauro Camoranesi and Renato Augusto, and now with an assortment of full backs - Sylvain Armand, Bakari Sagna, and Patrice Evra!

I don’t even know where to start guessing. So I won’t even try.

Oh!Oh! Patrice Evra to Lyon?!?! Be still my heart!

Ignoring the fact that there’s no chance that this could happen (Patrice has worked his butt off to be “costaud” enough for the EPL), it’s kind of exciting to think of Evra replacing Abidal. He’s the only other French leftback who makes my heart go pitter-pat. Unless we bring Escude into the equation, but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

I thought it was too, but it turns out it was Coupet’s. But it’s all just gossip (a LOT of gossip), and there’s no way to be really sure.

Though there were problems with Fred’s wife too. Not that she cheated on him but that she didn’t get on with Juninho (though now they’ve made up).

I sooo wish French tabloids ran this kind of stuff.

Ha im not that concerned about it, i just dont want coupet to kill wiltord because i would if i was him. Anyways, Tiago’s departure is imminent I guess, so we should hope Ederson is not already at Roma, or even Renato Augusto is still a decent price. Also, has anyone considered some of the Portugese youngsters, such as Manuel Fernanded, Miguel Veloso or Joao Moutinho. All three would be solid midfield signing. Veloso is a DM but he can pass and take free kicks, Fernandes is box to box with a scoring touch and Moutinho is absolute class, a Juninho type but despite his size can get his foot in. I would approve of any of the three.

Wiltord is like Derek Jeter, he’s very VERY popular with the ladies. He loves to party but he doesn’t drink so his performances don’t suffer. I mean he’s no Lilian Thuram but you have to respect his work ethic.

I think Lyon were linked with Manuel Fernandes two or three years ago, but I guess nothing came of it. Joao Moutinho has a 20 million euro release clause in his contract, so he’ll be an expensive buy. I don’t know enough about Veloso.

I would LOVE Ederson. If Lazio/Roma haven’t poached him, I would be thrilled to see him at Lyon. Though it does make our midfield rather crowded.

Milan announced two months back they were going to loan out Gourcuff, which got me excited, but they’ve now reversed their position and plan to keep him.

And Sam, I’m thrilled about the Lille Offside! We need more French team blogs on here.

I saw the Lille blog! I’m thrilled!! It would be fun to get a Ligue 1 contingent here to match EPL. (With Sam continuing to provide the overview, a la Martha for Italy.)

If we also got a PSG and a Marseille Offside, I think that would be great (Madsear said he’d consider it if he can find the time to commit).

Lille, OM, PSG, and Lyon are the French clubs best known outside the hexagon.

What’s this “Ligue 1″ you speak of?

I’m thinking Ederson is still in play. Fab Quag’s just had an interview in which he said his dream is to play for Roma over and over and over (I loved every sentence of it) and Roma will break the bank for him - they’ll have to. Lazio had Jimenez commit so they have to shell out big bucks for him. Me thinks Ederson has lost his Italian suitors.

Le Progres announced that Pepe could be the “mystery player”…gosh more than 15ME for a defender :-O!!! and it means moreover that Squillaci would be on the bench… Finally I have no clue about the left side for next year…but Aulas declared to Le Parisien that Ben Arfa should be the “One” for next season on the left: “he is the french C. Ronaldo”..yeah, yeah, but for all the games, I don’t really believe it, and I don’t even want to think about the CL??!!! so Bellhadj and Kallstrom as backup of Ben Arfa????
Otherwise on many french blogs, the big rumor (/hope/dream) is Elmander…do they really want play in 4-4-2??? I cannot see Juhnino in such organization???
Definitely weird what is going on …

Chris: Ligue 1 is the same of the French top division (like La Liga, EPL, Serie A, Bundesliga, Eredivisie, etc). And wow, Roma getting Quags would be huge. But where will he play?

Mat: You know, I am not thrilled about Pepe because I love Squillaci. He’s my favorite player for this season (more on that later). And there is Cris too, of course. Or maybe getting Pepe is indicating the Cris might leave too - a lot of clubs have been sniffing around him. IMO, having one of Cris, Squillaci, and Pepe on the bench is stupid.

I don’t know about Ben Arfaldo. He’s talented but still raw, and it’ll take some time before he’s ready to handle the left wing all on his own. I would prefer someone more experienced to be the starter, honestly.

As for Elmander…I really don’t see the point. I mean, yeah, the guy is talented, but he’s no better than what Lyon already have. What’s the point? If Aulas is going to splash the cash on a striker (Elmander would be expensive), he might as well go for someone bigger.

Juninho can play in 4-3-3 and in 4-4-2. But that’s true a 4-3-3 is better for the way he’s playing.
I’m still thinking Perrin will try 4-4-2 this season.
Zinedine Zidane said this week in an interview to a Chile’s Magazine (What the Hell Is He Doing There ???) that he is sure about ONE thing : In a couple of year, the “number 10″, who creates and lead the game in a team will disappear in World’s football… Juninho (though is number 8 ! lol) will probably be one of the last real one. So I think Perrin know that, and is organising it.
OL’s recruitments this year is probably as a consequence.

In a 4-4-2, Juninho won’t be able to play as often or for the entire duration of the game, so more time for Kallstrom.

Also, is Ben Arfa strong enough to play as a winger in a 4-4-2? He lacks Malouda’s bulk and I worry that he’ll get run over by huge RBs. I would like to see him as a shadow striker, to be honest.
