Muller is starting for Switzerland today in the tournament opener against the Czech Republic.

He’s playing next to Senderos. While Muller obviously doesn’t have his physical presence, you can tell that he’s more of a thinker and is the guy responsible for keeping things calm at the back. He’s the ultimate example of brains over brawn, aka the intelligent baller. I really wish Lyon had given Muller another chance and kept him. Who knows, if he has a good tournament, maybe Lyon will reconsider.

Pjanic, Lloris and Ederson all three seem to be very smart boys, all of them appreciated by their former teammates.
I’m sure if Reveillere (Mr I-never-show-any-emotion) and Ben Arfa (Mr I-think-I-am-the-best) are given the right to leave, there might be a reason.

Nothing to compare with Govou and Coupet, who have been with us for so many years.

Anyway, the board specifically said they wanted to hire a coach for a longer contract, so I guess they are really looking for the right one.

I am surprised at Toulalan’s comment. Ok, he plays for France, but I would have thought that they would at least have been given a phone call to say that they had a new “classmate”.

The age thing is great and bad, it is one of the main reason I love Grosso. Old players are more hungry for team titles than personal glory. Grosso is very good for the team spirit. We need a very experienced right back, and Cris would be happier (??? – Squillaci – Cris – Grosso). I am all for youth up front, but I think that the defense is an “old men’s” job.

That’s why I would have prefer Coupet to stay, he was a charismatic figure.

I don’t know about you, but it is always hard for me to know if I’d prefer Govou and Juninho to stay or leave. It seems that every day I have a different opinion about it. They are just sooooo important, and push Lyon up. But sometimes I also have the feeling they slow the new team building down because of their nostalgy… Ah, I am so undecided…

Good point Inara. And that’s why I feel that Lyon should really spend time hunting a good manager who will stay for at least 3-4 seasons and of course deliver the results. Not V Luxembergo though.

Also, this is what Toulalan had to say about Lyon’s coach hunt:

“We asked Robert Duvern to keep us updated, and we read the newspapers. I saw that Lyon signed Lloris, which is great for the future. If Lyon get a new coach, that will be my third one in the three years I’ve been at Lyon.”

He makes a good point. For Lyon to have a different coach every year is bad in the long run because the squad needs to gel together – and that includes the manager.

I saw that Cris interview, though to be fair, in the original interview in French, he didn’t pissed so much as sad. But I think that’s to be expected. So many of the “old guard” are gone and have been replaced by newer players, who haven’t been around long enough to forge those kind of familial relationship. But give it time, it will happen once again.

Also, good point mikep. I actually am writing a post about the age of the squad, Right now, Lyon have only three players 30 years and above, Juni, Cris, and Grosso. Most of our players are 25 and younger. And I’ve also noticed that Lyon tend to sign young players. I for one would like our next recruit to be older and more experienced as opposed to a prospect. Arsenal is not the route I want Lyon to go.

Megame, thanks for the info. I’m not surprised that Lyon haven’t decided yet, and I’d rather they take their time. I always felt that last year, they rushed into picking Perrin.
