Oh Alou
By: Inara | June 23rd, 2007
Alou Diarra is not willing to let bygones be bygones.
Despite the resignation of arch nemesis Gerard Houllier, Diarra refuses to consider staying at Lyon, even though he would get a fresh start under Alain Perrin. So reluctantly, Aulas is allowing him to look at other options.
Options which, rather strangely, Diarra has aplenty. For a guy who’s barely played all year, he’s attracted the attention of many top clubs, including Juventus and Bayern Munich.
Diarra, who’s been feeling wanted for the first time all year, is taking his sweet time as he blatantly ignores Aulas’s June 30th transfer deadline and tries to find ways to inconvenience Lyon as much as possible.
First, he announced that he wanted to play for a club that will be in the Champions League next year. That got Werder Bremen interested, who promptly offered Miroslav Klose in exchange.
But then Diarra said that he wanted to play in England, which caused Portsmouth to submit a €9m bid.
Lyon accepted the offer, but Diarra turned it down, this time saying that Portsmouth wasn’t big enough. Newcastle then entered the picture, Sam Allardyce no doubt interested in acquiring a midfield destroyer that was sadly underused at one of the top teams in Europe.
BUT (and you knew this was coming, right?), Diarra decided not to rule out staying in France, and Bordeaux, who will be bleeding after Julien Faubert and Rio Mavuba leave this summer, also decided they want in. Except Bordeaux can’t afford Diarra and want him on loan instead, which is what Lyon want to avoid at all costs (Aulas doesn’t want to pay the salary of a player who would be playing for one of Lyon’s domestic rivals).
So where will Alou end up? His transfer might turn out to be as drawn out as Mahamadou Diarra’s last season, which was completed on the final day of the summer transfer deadline. So we might have to wait until August 31st to find out where Diarra’s destination (which would be his one year anniversary with Lyon…how poetic).
For those of you needing a recap of Diarra’s one year love affair with Houllier, it goes like this: Diarra, who turned down a move to Roma in order to be the new Mahamadou Diarra at Lyon, spent most of the season on Lyon’s bench due to Jeremy Toulalan’s superb form. After losing his place on the France NT to Toulalan as well, Diarra began to vocally complain about his lack of starting opportunities, and Houllier, who was of the opinion that players should be seen and not heard, lost patience with him as the year went on. The straw that broke Houllier’s back, however, was during the Coupe de la Ligue final, when a very pissed off Diarra overturned a table in the locker room because he wasn’t on the list of players for the match. Houllier then banished him to the reserves (you can read about that here). Diarra, who still hadn’t learned to keep his mouth shut, spoke out again, which promoted Houllier to say some very harsh things about him. Ouch.
P.S. Alou means “potato” in Bengali. I guess that’s why I can’t take him seriously.

Diarra is a good player. He was good during the WC Final despite it is not easy to enter in a such match. But, in my opinion, he was stupid not accepting the fact to be the second behind Toulalan. He should worked his weakness, not really fast in the interception which provoke too much foults, and his relance which could be better. I presume it is not easy to loose his place of sucessor of the great DM(behind mak. and Viera) and his place at Lyon against the same Toulalan. He could become the next Viera if he work, even if the concurrence no is big.(other Diarra, toulalan, Diaby, and i forgottened some ones. probably for the transfer, his ego think he can find a club where he can prove he is the next md of NT…

I was VERY enthousiastic when Diarra signed at Lyon.
I am VERY disappointed of his behavior this year.Posted from

Diarra has undoubted talent but with all the defensive mid-fielders Lyon has at least one had to leave. It turns out that it’s Diarra, and once officialy transfered I will feel relieved.

I don’t really understand why any English side wants him to tell you the truth. He’s not made for the English game. Sure, he was younger when he was at Liverpool, but he was one of Houllier’s little projects and still couldn’t have bribed his way onto the pitch. Plus he was playing behind the Kaiser and I’m pretty sure even if he had poisoned Didi, would still prefer the sickly German to him.

He has been an unwelcome disruption and i say get him the hell out of Lyon.
This is an excerpt from English dominated website foxsportsworld.com look at how stupid, short sided and arrogant the English press is:
Chelsea will spend £18million this week on Brazilian youngster Alexandre Pato, according to the News of the World. The virtually unknown teenager will reportedly become Jose Mourinho’s first cash signing of the summer after the free-transfer deals for Steve Sidwell, Claudio Pizarro and Tal Ben Haim.
Virtually unknown!?!?!? He is incredible, steve sidwell and ben haim are unknowns, they have no visibility outside england. and has anyone ever watch a bayern munich game? pizarro is horrible, he barely ever scores, id say as much as shevchenko. its ok though because i gravely hate chelsea.

Thierry: Actually, I think everyone expected Diarra to be the starter…even Toulalan! When Jeremy came in, no one ever thought he’d be able to take over for Djila (except for Houllier). I think that’s why Lyon rushed and bought Alou while letting go of Pedretti (big mistake). But Toulalan proved everyone wrong, which is impressive when you think that until this season, Diarra was probably considered to be the more talented player.
Jo: The general consensus of Diarra among OL fans seems to be that he’s a decent player. It’s just his attitude that makes him unbearable. We put up with Fred’s because right now, he’s the best Lyon has and because he cost 15m euros (though I imagine he too would be sold if he wasn’t repentant), but Diarra isn’t irreplaceable, and he’s lost the confidence of his teammates.
Of course players have egos, some especially big ones (I’m looking at you, Titi), but in Diarra’s case, he hasn’t done enough to merit the size of his ego. It’s always seemed to me that he feels entitled to play without working for it. Maybe it has to do with being a WC finalist (that is a pretty big honor, tbh), and he was the center of attention at Lens…but that’s no excuse.
Thomas: I think if Diarra hadn’t been injured in the winter and Lyon didn’t buy Fabio Santos, the club would be more unwilling about his departure. But it seems that Fabio Santos is willing to stay (though apparently he too hit out at Houllier for not playing) while Diarra just wants to get the hell out of Lyon.
Brian: I don’t know, it’s hard to tell if he’d be suited for the prem or not. He was at Liverpool but he never played a first team game for them (I have no idea why Houllier recruited him…I’m so glad he was never in charge of Lyon’s recruitments), and so far in his career, it’s hard to determine what style he has (technical, physical?). I personally would like to see him at Bremen, and I think he would complement Torsten Frings very nicely, but apparently, the Bundesliga is too small for him.
But if he is determined to play in the EPL, I can’t imagine a better manager for him than Allardyce. Diarra has a huge attitude problem, and at least Big Sam knows how to deal with that. I think if Diarra can straighten out his head, he’ll make Houllier really regret benching him at Lyon.
Corey: I have to say, English press is probably the worst. And as attitudes go, they seem to think that anyone outside the Prem is a step down as a footballer (I mean, to see the press rate average English players above class talents that play in smaller leagues is mind boggling sometimes. I think it’s why some of the fans get disgruntled when they see their clubs asked to pay high prices for players outside of England. But the more intelligent fans, as well as the club management, know better.
By the way, Corey, Benhamida has been sold to Montpellier. I’m kind of disappointed in that, as he was the captain of Lyon’s CFAs. But I guess he saw that he had no chance of passing either Clerc or Reveilliere to get onto the first team at Lyon, and he needs to play.
Also, Lyon submitted a 12m bid for Renato Augusto. I think the club might be willing to go to 15 for him. I hope so, as he’s definitely a future talent.

Is it really sure this bid for Renato Augusto ??? I am still wondering how OL’s left side will look next year???
Our new beloved coach confirmed that Ben Arfa should be “the one” as substitute for Malouda (nb Arsenal is back in the dance for FM), and declares he was interested in Armand if Abidal leaves (Barca would raise his offer so it should work…)…
I think that everybody is really wondering about the identity of the last recruits…no ru;ors, no declaratin of OL management>>>a good sign????Posted from

I read the Renato Augusto bid on a Brazilian news site somewhere (I will dig up the link), though again, OL have kept so quiet that I don’t know what to think. Aulas gave an interview on RMC the other night where he said that 2 or 3 plays may or may not arrive.
Aargh. Armand is the most obvious track should Abidal leave (which I’m sure he will despite Barca’s shenanigans). People keep on talking about Elmander, which I think is pointless. He’s good but not good enough to overload our manpower again. I’m sure we’ll be getting another midfielder though. I’m also not clear which position Belhadj will be playing in next year either.

Benhamida was unsettled at the club and wanted out, he did play in the centre too but Paillot is ahead of him there. It is too bad, but then again people like Gomez and Sartre were sold off and they have become solid but hardly spectacular performers. Benhamida was a prospect but he never made an appearance which tells you something, although with Ged who knows.
As for Renato Augusto, he will be a good signing if it goes through, but our reliance on brasil is always troubling. Also, he would not be for the left side, he would be for Juninho/Kallstroms role so i dont think this one is right just yet.

Perrin said in an interview that both Paillot and Remy would make the jump to the first team, which is definitely good news. I’m not sure about the fate of Bettiol yet.
It is true, Lyon rely more heavily on Brazil than a lot of other clubs (Perrin doesn’t like it either), but I think we don’t have a choice. Most of our Brazilian recruits were really good - Sonny, Cacapa, Juni, Cris, and Fred. Nilmar was another talented player but for whatever reason couldn’t establish himself on the team. Elber was at the end of his prime, and I think Fabio Santos is the most average out of them. Renato Augusto is definitely not an average player, though I have doubts as to whether Lyon will be able to get him, with clubs like United, Arsenal, and Liverpool interested.
Brazil is the only way Lyon can afford to buy really talented players since we can’t afford to buy talent from abroad. Talent in L1 is becoming more and more expensive as clubs seek to follow the Aulas method and rob us blind (when was the last time Lyon brought in a player under 7 million - besides Belhadj, but he went back to Sedan on loan)? The other thing about Brazil is that players actually want to come here, since even France’s salaries are a lot better than what they get paid at home.
If we didn’t have excellent recruiters like Marcelo and Lacombe, I’d be more concerned. But it’s rare when they make mistakes, and Lyon’s history has few flop transfers compared to even the best European clubs out there.

ELMANDER ???? Pointless ??? In my opinion, he could be considered as the best player of the last year in ligue 1. If as i remember(i could be wrong) he is able to play at the wings, he will be the perfect solution, i mean in an eventually weakness at the future offensive wings (just keita now( malouda will probably left, govou no importance, wiltord ibid Govou)and in a “we have three AC in case of injuries but don’t say it to Fred” solution. The difference between Toulouse 16th(2005 2006) and toulouse (2006 2007)3rd= Elmander. Moreover, his price in a few years, when he will play against Europeans club could easilly increase by 3, and englishmen will”discover him”.

Elmander is a talented player, no doubt, but I don’t see him as an upgrade over Benzema or Fred. Over Baros probably. But unless Elmander is much better than what we already have, or if Lyon offload someone, it’ll be crowded once again. I’ll all for lightening manpower unless it’s to accommodate someone like Trezeguet.
If you take a closer look at his stats, you’ll notice that he was nearly invisible the first half of the year (he scored three goals in two games out of 19 in the league). The second half of the season was when he really blossomed, but if you look at when he scored his goals, he scored in only five games out of 19, two of those which featured a hat trick (v. Bordeaux) and a brace (v. Marseille).
Fred scored just as many league goals but was spread out through the year, which means they were more influential in terms of winning a particular game. And don’t forget Fred was suspended/injured for a third of the year).
The thing with Elmander is that he’s a very dramatic player - when he plays well, he plays REALLY well. So everyone notices. But he doesn’t seem like the kind of player you can depend on week in and week out, which is what Lyon really need. Someone whose goal output may not be flashy but is reliable.
But what I do like about Elmander is that he has a high number of assists for a striker, with six (which is more than Fred, Baros, and Benzema combined).

In my opinion Diarra is one of those who destroy a team’s inner solidarity.
How can you tell the medias during the week-end that you think you deserve to play more than another player, and then come to shake your teammate’s hand at the training?

it’s clear diarra hurt himself a lot with his mouth. he is a talented player and when on the pitch was usually a valuable asset, but his grumbling ruined it… hey, he got hurt, his competition for the spot shone, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. and GH DID give him pitch time. in fact just after he shot off his mouth the first time he got a league start and made a dog’s breakfast of it… and still got the next cup start and did well. he could have fit in very nicely if he’d been a bit more mature… until then he’s of little use to any club or the NT.

Paillot and Remy need to be in the first team, Beynie too if Diarra does leave (cross your fingers i guess) between Squillaci, Cacapa and Muller we can afford Paillot as our 4th, while Remy will get playing time if Perrin uses 4-4-2 because Keita and Ben Arfa will be shadow strikers most likely and we all know Govou and Keita are streaky. Elmander did not really have an impressive year, striker needs quantity as well as quality, and he really didnt have any quantity to speak of. He would not be a step up for Lyon. Bettiol will start the year as the #4 striker, and even though he scores goals in the reserves, he will have to be compared to benzema which means he will follow the julien viale route to Bastia or some club like that and fade away completely. I personally have never seen him play so i cant rate him, but lyons staff is split on him from what i see.
As for Brazil, Marcelo Dijon and Bernard do well, as well as Sonny Anderson chipping in even though he is a coach now. Renato Augusto would be a good signing but id rather have Ederson, we are more in need of that position the Augustos attacking midfield position which would see him as a winger eventually, which brazilians are not notorious for.Posted from

Salieri, it’s interesting you should mention that, because shortly after the CdL failure, Cacapa gave an interview where he let slip that things weren’t as peachy as the club was making it out to be, that it was hard to see yourself replaced by a player and then shake his hand the next day (I’m assuming he meant Baros-Fred and Diarra-Toulalan, though he also could have meant between him and Squillaci). I’ll try to find that interview.
Guingol, I think another reason that has Diarra thinking he’s been unfairly shafted is because he was out for two months with an injury, so he didn’t rack up the minutes. If he hadn’t been injured, then Lyon would never have bought Fabio Santos. And then his attitude cost him what time he could have had too.
Corey: Paillot and Remy will be on the first team next year. I’m not sure about Beynie though. About Bettiol, he might be loaned out next year to an L2 club for experience (Grenoble or Dijon). That will give him competitive experience, and perhaps then Lyon will know what kind of player they have on their hands.
Ederson’s move to Lazio doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, which means he’s available again. I know Lyon were interested, but Nice is asking for 12 million, and I don’t see the club paying that.

its a good move for Bettiol. As for Ederson, Lazio are “engaging” as Italian translations have it (I check this stuff all the time now because Chris and his Roma blog are great) Meghni as well as Maduro, while Jimenez was tied up earlier in the summer althoug theres conflicting reports about him wanting out all the sudden… anyways, Ederson is one for the future still, while Meghni and Maduro are closer to their prime, which is what Lazio needs if they make it to the group stage, so i feel like ederson isnt gonna make the move. his price is turning lazio off too. Lyon wont pay 12, but you know Auluas can knock that down, and we have an EU spot and Ederson has been in France for three years now, he isnt far off getting french citizenship, then again neither is Juninho, or does he have it already? i know Cacapa got his this year. Non EU spots are exclusively for Brazilians at Lyon…

Well, apparently Juni doesn’t have his passport yet. Don’t know what’s taking so long, but obviously the club expects it soon or they wouldn’t bother looking in Brazil at the moment.
I would LOVE Ederson.

Ederson would be a better edition, Renato Augusto would take time to adapt to Europe and a new position because we dont play with a attacking midfielder like they do in Brazil. If he was bought im sure he would end up on loan somewhere, which would be suitable for me, but in the short term id go for Ederson.
