Only Five Days Left

By: Inara | January 25th, 2008

Silly season went by very quickly, and though it doesn’t seem like it, Lyon have been fairly busy during this transfer window. We sold Nadir Belhadj to Lens, loaned Fabio Santos to Sao Paulo for six months, received Marc Crosas on loan from Barca, and bought Cesar Delgado from Cruz Azul.

Lyon haven’t exactly dealt with the problems to their back line (ignoring it actually), but after last Sunday’s humiliating loss to Lens, Aulas finally got his act together and made a deal to sign Juventus reject Jean-Alain Boumsong. Except now the deal might be off. Oops.

garay.jpg

Could Garay be the answer to our defensive nightmares?

Not to be swayed, Lyon then lodged a €15m bid for Racing Santander defender Ezequiel Garay, who at 20 years old would be a great addition to the squad. His buyout clause is €20m, and so far the only other club to bid for him is Tottenham, who bid €10m.

Lyon are also looking at Sébastien Pocognoli of AZ Alkmaar. A talented young left back, Lyon would like him to replace be an understudy to Fabio Grosso. However, his price is estimated to be over €8m.

Their next (and most likely target) is Ederson, whom Lyon have had their eye on for quite some time. A talented Brazilian playmaker, he’s seen as by many as Juninho’s heir apparent. So far Nice have managed to resist bids for their key midfielder, but Lyon are now prepared not just to meet his €12m release clause but offer more if need be. Aulas wants him to arrive this January but concedes that a summer arrival is far more likely. As for Ederson, he said that he wouldn’t mind coming to Lyon in the summer and in fact would rather stay in France for a while because he doesn’t feel ready to leave for another country just yet. One possibility is that Lyon will buy him right now but loan him back to Nice for the remainder of the season (like what they did for Belhadj last year).

In case Ederson doesn’t come, Lyon have their eyes on Tranquillo Barnetta, an attacking midfielder currently plying his trade with Bayer Leverkusen. He’s not cuptied, which is an added attraction. A Swiss international, his fee is estimated to be around €10m.

ederson.jpg

Say hello to Ederson. Even Juninho loves this guy.

Marc Crosas is so enamored with Lyon that he’s already gone back on his earlier statements that he wants to return to Barcelona in June. Now he says that if Lyon want to keep him, he wouldn’t mind staying.

As for those leaving the Gerland this winter…Barcelona have finally jumped on the Karim Benzema bandwagon. They resisted admirably, and while Real Madrid, Chelsea, Milan, and Manchester United were pushing and shoving each other in line, Barca took a step back and said, “Hey, we have the best strike force in the world!” But they’ve now changed their minds, and even tried to put in an option for first refusal on Crosas’s loan deal. Nice try. Karim isn’t going anywhere, ya hear?!?!

And since Barca were in the area ogling Benzema, they’ve also decided that they might be interested in Kim Kallstrom. I don’t know if Barca want to touch this one because Aulas will put them through hell. Lyon refused a €14m offer from Valencia last summer and will only let Kallstrom go for greater value (especially since he’s been playing oh so well this year. Though it’s possible that Crosas could be used to bring down the price if Barca truly are interested (depending on who leaves the Blaugrana this summer).

Lyon and Portsmouth have agreed to a six month loan deal for Milan Baros, who is worried that his lack of playing time will jeopardize his chances of making the Czech Republic squad for Euro 2008. Portsmouth will have the option to buy Baros at the end of the loan for €7m. Even better is that Portsmouth actually want him.

baros.jpg

Baros got totally shafted by Lyon management.

Baros didn’t want to leave, but with Fred having decided to stay (since Tottenham refused to meet his outrageous salary demands), he doesn’t want to be the #3 choice in a team that plays with only one established striker (also, Lyon said that one of their strikers would have to leave this January). I personally think this makes the club look really bad. On one hand, you have Baros who’s dealt with a tough situation with dignity and good spirit, who has yet to complain even once, works hard every time, and was told that he could stay. Then you have Fred, who shows up late to practice, takes vacations whenever he wants, demands a lot of money and attention, bitches in the press every other day, and periodically engages in violent fits of temper on the pitch. And who gets rewarded? Fred of course.

Anyway, feel free to post more news and rumors.

Yer well that takes the Fuckin piss, Boumsong is bollocks(the cheap and easy option)While the other targets are hardly impressive and unlikely to happen, another disappointing transfer window. The summer is not good for Lyon anyway, as u all say basicaly wot it means is key players leaving. This year probly benzema, benarfa and Kallstrom and whoever else is willing to pay for Aulass cigars or summin, with flops arriving. Same old Lyon.

I thought Lyon want to win the champs league? Coz its never ever going to happen while recruiting low lifes like Anderson,Boumsong and Co. While selling key figures, not withy Perrin at the helm either, players like boumsong makes me wonder why lyon want him ? No skill wotsoever and certainly wont help champs lgue ambitions, players like Barzagli,Garay generally will, 4 days left in the marcato and still disapointed i only wish Aulas could here me and how others feel.I think we need a foreign takeover with money now Aulas has taken us as far as he can, he is starting to become a poor, poor presidant in the last couple of seasons.

Guys, I know most of us didn’t want Boumsong, but railing against Aulas isn’t going to do us much. We have to remember that you can’t compare Lyon to the likes of MU and Barca. For us, there is no such thing as expensive short term options. We plan in the long term. So players like Garay, who would be purchased to play for only a handful of weeks, isn’t for us just yet. Anderson and Boumsong are just short term solutions until Cris regains full fitness. It’s obvious that the club’s first choice pairing is Cris and Squillaci, so it doesn’t make sense to buy someone like Garay for 20m. My guess is that the club will bide until summer time to see if Cris regains his form and then make a more permanent bid. We will probably loan out Anderson in that case.

Lyon can’t buy players just for a handful of CL games. We don’t have the clout of Chelsea were great players will willingly sit on the bench. So Lyon have to take baby steps. It’s hard as fans to see this happen, and it does seem like a lack of ambition, but we all know that Aulas does want Lyon to get bigger. It’s foolish to think that he’s content with the way things are now. But he knows that it will take time. Look at Lyon 10, even 5 years ago and compare it to today. And have faith that another 5 years from now, when we have our own stadium, we’ll be even bigger.

Thats a very mature post Inara. The important thing is that Lyon haven’t been left high and dry without a CB. Things could be a lot worse. Now we have a new defender that played for Juventus. Lets not be cry babies about it.

Yer but Inara we dont want players like Anderson and Boumsong especially. If we are ambitious we should be looking for better players all the time, better than squillaci and Cris, why be content with those two ? plus Garay would nick Squillacs place at CB surely, IMO he is and if not can become a lot better than Seb and Cris. Get rid of the im afraid to say scum in the squad like-Delgado,Paillot,Anderson,Boumsong,Santos and maybe reveillere coz there not title winning players IMO. Aulas does lack ambition 2, although i dont agree with this method even if it was unlikely he would bid for massive players like Atletico and Chelsea when they found a fortune, clubs with ambition dont sign mediocre players. Just who is likely to come in during the next few days of the market?

Ronan, Lyon do go after better players. The problem is, as Inara put it, Lyon aren’t on the same level as Madrid, Barca, and Man U. Lyon can look at all the top young or hot at the moment players, but if Barca, Man U, Madrid, Chelsea are interested in them, they won’t even give us a look even though Lyon would probably be the perfect place for said player. That’s just the way football is. Lyon just usually picks up the best players from said team from the previous Ligue 1 season (Kallstrom, Bodmer, Abidal, Squillaci, Toulalan) and lackeys (Anderson, Boumsong, Baros) from big/other clubs and just go with it. That might work when playing in Ligue 1, but fails on the Champions league level. Until Lyon gets in through their head that they are an actual big club (because they are), then it will remain the same.

Ronan, Delgado is new, and he could be great, Santos is a machine, the game against barca showed that he can play DM effectively, and I for one am glad he’s coming back. I agree with Inara on this one, Aulas has good judgment, spending crazy this january would be foolish, especially with our team the way it is, we still have the class to make it through all the competitions and the league, sure boumsong sucks, but until he loses a game for us from his lack of ability I’m going to say he’s the cheaper, but better option. He does have experience, and you tend to learn from your mistakes…seeing as he’s made close to every one…I’ll stay slightly positive.

I completely understand what you’re saying Inara, but Lyon buying players like Boumsong makes French football the laughing stock and scoffing of Europe. Me and a mate in work who is a Man United fan were talking about the upcoming CL game and laughing about Bramble messing up again and he partnership with Boumsong being hillarious. Then I read Lyon has signed him, my mate was laughing and I knew that was that.

Cris and Squillaci, well, do what you’ve always done, and get what you’ve always gotten. If Lyon don’t sign better players than they have, which they haven’t, they are only gonna take steps backwards. They’ve got a substandard coach to boot. Does Aulas REALLY want to take Lyon fowrad, or to line his pockets?

IMO, people should wait to see the results BEFORE laughing.
It’s extraordinary how so much people here are so better managers than those of Lyon !
Why do you guys don’t train and manage a club as big as your talent ?
I absolutely wanna see your results, and such the greaaaat football your players would play !
And I’d wanna see how you can get the money to buy and pay the players you want…

Please, please. Try to stay objective and modest. There are things we cannot understand, simple supporters that we are.

Let Boumsong a chance, and let’s talk about Lyon’s result at the end of the season.

Jo: That’s a fairly benile arguement. Like saying, “oh you say Boumsongs shit but I’d like to see you do any better!”
As fans of the club we have a right to express our opinions. Football is a spectator sport were the participants get alot of money to entertain. Why should we have anything negative to say about Perrin in the first place unless we are expecting more? Fans opinions have a big sway in clubs, look how the Liverpool fans protested to keep Benitez.

    Ush,

I didn’t write this. I don’t blame your opinion, I blame the way some guy here give their opinion, and who wrote WHAT AULAS HAS TO DO BECAUSE THEM AND ONLY THEM know how to rule a club. I’m looking at you, Ronan.
I’m completely all right, we are here to give our opinions, and I give mine very often. I just don’t insult aulas whan I don’t agree with him, and I just try to understand what’s the strategy of every action OL does.
Some people here cannot hear other’s writers arguments.

I think I probably can tell you a hundred exemples of players who became “indispensable” to a team, after being “indesirable” in another.
I just try to explain that football isn’t just “YOU are good, Come on !” and “You are SHIT, get out !”
There are thousands of details that make or not a good player in a club. So I’d just like some people to be more open, more aware with that.

And I think that we will not help Boumsong to help the team if every website or newspaper write that he’s a joke on the pitch. He will feel it, he will know that. I’d like him to arrive here with confident. We know he can be good, or Juve would never have paid for him, even in Serie B.
I’m not a fan of him, but I’m sure he can do something right. Maybe I will be wrong, but at least I’ll be sure that it would have not be my fault if he’s not. I’ll try to help him, because I’m a supporter of his NEW club.

Yer but Boumsong is a proven crap player Jo i can factually say he IS and WILL be crap for Lyon- dont believe me watch 95% of his games in the last few seasons. Aulas deserves to be insulted, the transfers hes let go are a joke !!!!!!!!! Fair enough if our best players want to leave(usually its on fallings out with JMA) But the idea is to replace them with better ones, not ones half as good and half the price as there formers, thats not acceptable- I could do better than that, thats IMO.

I have to agree with Jo - a player who might not be great in one team can be good in another. Look at David Bellion. Also, remember how no one wanted Fabio Santos? And Cris failed at Bayer Leverkusen. Tiago is not doing well at Juve and didn’t shine at Chelsea, yet he was immense for us. Etc.

Yer but Boumsongs been terrible almost everyware hes been and playing for a big team like Lyon i dont see that changing, plus the difference is with Boumsong is we have never seen glimpses of talent from him unlike the players u mensioned. But any way untill he makes his first mistake for us, ill give him a chance.

Wouldn’t you love if we got Diego from Bremen as a successor to Juninho? That would just be dream material but Lyon wouldn’t put up the cash, not sure if any club could! Haven’t seen much of this Ederson but if he plays in France already Lyon might have a good shout to sign him.
