Transfer Window Merry-Go-Round
By: Inara | January 9th, 2008A lot has been happening in the last few days. I’ve been putting off writing about it like the lazy blogger (I’ve been watching a lot of CNN in the past couple of days because of the primaries), but I finally sat down at a computer long enough to whip out today’s post.
Lyon have certainly been active this January transfer window. Normally, the club don’t like buying and selling in the middle of the year and only do so because of injuries. But this year, it seems Lyon are eager to cut the fat from the squad, so to speak. Most of us disagree with the moves the club are making, but I’ve decided to trust Lacombe and Aulas. They didn’t spend the last 20 years doing nothing. If they think a player doesn’t belong at Lyon, no matter his talent, then they must have some justification.
Confirmed and Rumored Departures:
First, Nadir Belhadj has officially departed Lyon for Lens. This is not a loan but a permanent deal. I regret this because Belhadj was a player with a lot of potential, but he couldn’t break into the starting XI and dislodge Fabio Grosso. Thankfully, Belhadj isn’t angry with Lyon and hasn’t discounted the possibility of playing for them in the future.
Jay over at the Lens Offside is covering things down at his end, so you can read more here. But I will say one thing: it’s a shame that Belhadj didn’t have more patience because if we’ve learned anything in the past year, it’s that patience and hard work do get rewarded. We know he’s a talented player, but he failed to win the confidence of Alain Perrin.
That’s not unsurprising when you consider that last year was his first year in the top flight. He eventually would have broken into the side though. But Belhadj wanted to play right now, and Lyon realized that they should let him go instead of letting him rot on their bench (a la Benoit Pedretti).
There has been another unexpected departure – that of Fabio Santos to Sao Paulo. Thankfully, this is just a six month loan, and he’ll be back by the end of June. It’s also good to know that he didn’t want to leave – in fact, he regrets leaving just as he’s starting to show us what he’s capable of. But his wife is having complications with her pregnancy, and so he had to go to Brazil to be with her. Lyon are being very helpful – I think they’ve learned from the Fred situation that it’s important to help accommodate a player when their families are in distress.
Lyon didn’t want Fabio Santos to leave either. Honestly, I’m devastated by his departure. He’s been fitting into the squad and offering a different set of abilities that complement Jeremy Toulalan’s. I was dreaming of a Toulalan-Fabio Santos-Juninho midfield. Oh well. It’ll have to wait I guess.
Tottenham are certainly feeling ambitious this season. Their new manager Juande Ramos has Karim Benzema on his radar. Unfortunately for Spurs, they have zero chance of landing Benzema. Manchester United, AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, all of whom have been willing to put down over €30m+ for a cuptied teenage striker, have already been turned down. And before some of you scoff in disbelief, guess what? Money isn’t everything.
Martha has more on the comments made by Benzema of Milan being a dream destination, but it’s just an old recycled interview. We’ll have to get used to constant speculation involving Benzema from now on.
Fred is also on the verge of departure. More on that here.
Confirmed and Rumored Arrivals:
Cesar Delgado has arrived! He’s at Lyon today to take his medical, and if all goes well, he should be an OL player by the end of the week. The value of his transfer is €10m. Read his interview.
He’s cover for Kader Keita, who is away with the Ivory Coast in African Nations Cup duty, and for Sidney Govou, who is currently injured. The club is also hoping that Delgado will add another dimension to Lyon’s attack. He’s 26, so he has the emotional maturity to successfully adapt to another country. He’ll be the first Argentine at Lyon since the late 1980’s, and it’ll be interesting to see how he settles into such a Brazilian club.
The untimely departure of Fabio Santos means that Lyon need another defensive midfielder. The biggest name being bandied about is that of Lassana Diarra, ex-Chelsea and soon to be ex-Arsenal player.
I do NOT want Diarra. Not only is he cuptied (AKA USELESS – what if Toulalan is injured/suspended in the CL?), but Diarra’s ego is as fragile as Fred’s. Lyon play with only on DM at a time, and for me, Toulalan>Diarra eight days a week. He also has high wages, and Arsenal will command a hefty transfer fee. Thankfully, Lyon think that they have little chance at landing Diarra, which is only a good thing. In fact, I think Diarra is a smokescreen for…
…Marc Crosas. Now, I’ll be honest here. I just don’t get this one. Crosas is also cuptied, and furthermore, he’s a 20 year old Barca youth academy graduate who has made only a handful of appearances for the senior side. According to L’Equipe, he too will be having his medical today, and if all goes well, he’ll also be in an OL jersey by the end of the week.
But Crosas is not a solution to our problems. We need a backup for ALL competitions, a physical, technical, and experienced player who will balance Kim Kallstrom, Juninho, and the back four. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen Crosas play, so perhaps Isaiah or Linda could tell us more. Pretty please?
Apparently, Eric Abidal sang praises of OL to Crosas, who decided to head to France rather than Real Sociedad. Mind you, he’s considered to be the “next best young Spanish thing,” but with Xavi, Deco, and Iniesta in his way, he needs playing time. And Crosas is very talented. But though I’m normally all for young players, but this is really not the time for Lyon to be helping out Barca, their new BFF. For all of Crosas’s talent, he’s too young to scare a flock of pigeons.
Additionally, Barcelona are only offering Crosas on loan for six months (it’s unclear if Lyon will have the option to buy). While the loan option is handy since we’ll be getting back Fabio Santos in the summer, I would hate to see Crosas develop into an amazing player only to have him leave again.
YESSSSSSSSS. Lyon are still interested in Hugo Lloris, Nice’s goalkeeper. Lloris is a terrific player and my pick to become the #1 goalkeeper for the France NT. His contact will end in 2009, so Nice will be looking to cash out. His transfer value is estimated at around €7m. Get him, I say!
Unfortunately, Milan seem to be the front runners for his signature, and frankly, Lloris would be dumb to pick Lyon over Milan (well, maybe not – French players in Italy can’t seem to cement their spots in the national team). So let’s hope Milan pick someone else so that Lloris can come to Lyon and eventually take over for Gregory Coupet.
Lyon haven’t said anything about getting another defender, though I’m sure they plan too. They will probably want someone who can play both as a CB and an LB. Of course, Lyon is denying that they need to replace Belhadj, but I think they will. Lyon’s defense has been a problem all season, and though Coupet has returned, we are still shaky in the back. I would hope that Lyon will also look into getting another striker. While Benzema is a superstar, Milan Baros isn’t, and I don’t feel comfortable with just the two of them. Delgado is a winger, so he can’t fill that position either.
I’m sure we’ll hear more in the coming days…am I missing anyone?

Crosas played only 20 minutes as a professional player this season. And of course, this was in Champions League.
So no backup for Toulalan in this competition. Blah
Please Manchester don’t be too tough with Jeremy!Posted from

Okay, so here is some more info on Crosas. The loan is without an option to buy, which basically makes no sense whatsover. I take back what I said about trusting Aulas and Lacombe. What is the point of getting Crosas? Yeah, I get it, he’s a “prospect,” but we have enough of those dammit. And attacking midfield is the one position that we don’t need any more depth.
He’s cuptied. He’s a kid. All his experience is from Spain Secunda. And we can’t buy him in six months. Well, apparently Lyon could have had the option to buy, but his price was too expensive for Lyon’s tastes. I just don’t get it.
I’m starting to think that the only reason we’re getting Crosas is so that Delgado has someone to talk in Spanish with as he settles in Lyon.

To me, recruiting Crosas means that Lyon doesn’t believe in their chance to beat Manchester United in Champion’s league.
They know that Toulalan use to have yellows cards. He’s so everywhere, we cannot blame him for that. If we beat Man U, I’m pretty sure Toulalan won’t be at least in one match of the next rounds.
I think that OL want to win Le Championnat + la coupe de france + la coupe de la ligue, with this team. And I think they can do that. But If they really wanted the Champion’s league, they would have buy a great DM who can play in this competition.

I never thought about that Inara, the spanish speaker thing between Crosas and Delgado.
I think Aulas and Lacombe are just taking Crosas in case of multiple injuries. I think he will play in the cup games to rest Toulalan. It’s obvious for me they took Crosas to replace Santos, so as I said in a previous post, that is good news as it means Santos will come back.
Also, makes me think Lyon will deal more with Barcelona in the summer mercato, they are keeping good relations with them… I can see a big transfer to Lyon from Barca in the summer (a defender).Of course, Crosas is cup tied for CL, but I really think Perrin will use a lot of rotation in the second part of the seaaon. after all, Lyon will play 2 games per week, and I see him rest Toulalan quit a bit in the “smaller games”.
As you said Inara, we have to trust Aulas and Lacombe, they always see further than anyone, so there must be a big plan behind all this.

The big plan is buying people in the summer Pride, but that never really pans out, and with the EURO, transfer prices will be inflated to the max, so unless we get quality to replace what we are missing now, I dont forsee it happening this summer. Aulas wont spend to much on any one player for defensive midfield or center back because they are not stars. Strikers are stars, they sell jerseys. Caution may in the long term work, but the fact is Aulas needs some revenue from investments with the stadium build, so spending big is not in the budget. I dont expect a CL win this year anyways, but why not bring in the two or three players that we could integrate to have the type of competitive squad we have had for the past 4 years. Because this year I dont think its up to par. And Crosas and Delgado are no Nilmar and Pedretti.

Perhaps we’ll be signing a defender than can also double as a DM? Edmilson was able to do that. I just can’t believe the club would willingly allow themselves to be content with having only one true DM on the roster. It’s just not Lyon’s style.
Anyway, if Lyon write off the CL now, they can kiss Benzema goodbye. Benzema has made it clear that he wants Lyon to act like the big team he believes them to be. But Lyon selling themselves short is something that will drive him a way more than big money offers from other clubs.

the truth is that I don’t care about those transfers. We haven’t used Belhadj not Fred this season, so we don’t lose a lot unless Grosso gets injured.
As for Santos, he has now a debt towards Lyon so he will be faithful to the club after that (not that he wasn’t until now).
I don’t think Lyon ever go in a game thinking they are going to lose. And I’m sure they will put up their best team against Manchester in the CL. If we have no injuries until then, we will all be happy with the team. But I prefer to take the risk of being short on players than have to many players who don’t play.Anyway before thinking about the CL, let’s win our games in France.

Crosas is a good player. He will be a good future investment for Lyon if they end up keeping him.

Each mercato the same thing : we managed to have a good team and good players or key players leave. Apparently Fabio Santos wanted to return to Brazil because he want his woman to have his baby in Brazil. Strange reason, i think for a man who difficultly find his mark in the team.
Personnaly, i would want Crosas for a buy, and Lassana Diara he is really good the next Makelele i think, may be better, moreover he could play in a lot of position, i think he could be a good opportunity for Lyon. I understand why he was in a bad mood : he want to play in order to progress and to be selected for Euro2008. For me it’s evident he could be very useful, he ’s not only a DM, despite he is a good DM. He is very courageous on the pitch and had a lot of energy.Posted from

I don’t understand the Crosas signing really. Seems like it benefiting Barca more than actually benefiting us. Lyon seriously need a centre back and holding midfielder. Lucas Biglia would be an amazing signing, however he is cup-tied as well and may go over the EU qouta.

Inara, here’s my theory on Crosas. I think Barcelona knew Lyon was in a pickle with their midfield and are still playing in four different competitions and they decided to help them out to keep the momentum going. Since every big club in Europe wants to befriend Aulas right now because of Benzema next summer, Barcelona rubs his back now hoping to get to the negociation table first when it comes to Karim.
On another note, I heard from a reliable source that Lacombe called back Thiago and that he refused the option of coming back to Lyon.Posted from

Unsurprising, Crosas also doesn’t get why Lyon wanted him. In his own words, he’s “barely played all season.” Gotta love that honesty!
Anyway, Crosas has said that as honored as he is by Lyon picking him, he wants to prove he has a place at Barca and plans to return there. I don’t know if he’s just being political or honest since all loaned players say they want to go back. Anyway, I keep reading two different things – either Lyon has the option to buy or they don’t. No word yet from the clubs though.

Lyon are interested in Sparta Prague’s defender Michael Kadlec, ANOTHER cup-tied player (Sparta played against Arsenal in the third qualifying round).
I feel like I’m in an episode of the Twilight Zone.

Maybe Crosas is the next Fabregas. That sounds like the hype that Aulas would buy into.

yer but even if he becomes as good as kaka, fabregas and sneijder, we only keep him for a short while and plus he wont. Wot about the strikers anyway- who is coming in?

Delgado has signed, they list him as a left winger though. As for Crosas, he simply sees lyon as a stepping stone into the Barca full squad. He should give his all for us, but its a short sided signing that wont benefit us except domestically. And Lacombe talked to Tiago and they discussed a move, Lacombe say Tiago is welcome and if Juve contact Lyon, they would be happy to do business. I loved Tiago, but he isnt what we need anymore unfortunately.

Why is it that fred has been forced to leave ? I really hope he stays i think that if hes happy and in hot form he has the potential to be in the top three strikers in the worldb why doesnt perrin play this-
COUPET
CLERC-CRIS-SQUILLACI-GROSSO
DEMICHELLIS-TOULALAN
GOVOU-JUNINHO-BENZEMA
FREDWITH ANY ADDITIONAL SIGNINGS LEFT I

It seems to me that Lyon are putting a lot of faith in Delgado to score goals for Lyon. Delgado describes himself as a “striker who can also play on the wings”. He is fred’s replacement and he will let Benzema play as the main striker but also be able to link up with him if the need arises or come on as a substitute rather than Baros. I think he’s a good signing. His goal tally is impressive and the man has incredible poise on the ball.
As for the midfield I think Kallstrom and Bodmer will start playing a greater role and Toulalan is the going to be the lynchpin DM going forward. Of course that makes OL vulnerable in the CL since he doesnt have a backup if Lyon sign Crosas or L. Diarra. I hope the staff knows what its doing.
And yes, OL need a new defender.

Hmm, apart from the DM thing we ain’t too bad as long as we sign a quality CB. Just day dreaming here but 2 signings I think could be good:
Obafemi Martins from Newcastle – his buy-out clause is only 12 million. He’s an absolutely fantastic player for me. He’s playing 2nd fiddle to Owen and Viduka and the whole club is in disarray. Not cup tied and France is always a good destination for African players.
Richard Dunne from Man. City – this won’t happen but I’d love to see it. He wouldn’t be sold and it would be too much money I’d say anyway but he’s from where I live and a quality CB. Really dominates. Not cup tied either.

Ha Ha not sure about the authenticity of this, but it seems Barca are trying to take advantage of the Crosas loan.
Apparently, they ask to have an agreement to be able to discuss Benzema’s transfert first whenever he wants to leave the club.If that’s true Crosas can stay home.

I hope Crosas gets some play time…I don’t really understand the move either and would have rather see him loaned to either a top tier Segunda side like Sociedad or even another La Liga team, as right now he needs game time more than anything else.
He’s not really an attacking midfielder though, the Xavi comparison was pretty accurate although I’ve seen him play pretty deep in a more balanced “Pirlo” role. He can be used as a DM when you don’t need muscle but Fabio Santos he is not. I still think he could be useful and I wish both Crosas and Lyon the best of luck.

As far as DM, does anyone know what Sidi Keita of Lens’ status is now? That would be a nice pick-up if, we could forgive him for what he did to Cacapa.

What really pisses me off about lyon is the fact that they are happy to add are midfielders to the defence to cover (most of are defenders are shit anyway-bar clerc, cris and squillaci)the defence when they should just buy decent defenders instead of guys like Anderson ! Plus it sounds to me as though if fred leaves he wont be replaced– wow lyon will be brilliant- 2 stikers when most bclubs have 4 or 5- and a defence with really only three players and a midfield covering a defencive position lik left back-god, how good are we gonna be !
Aulas and Lacombe spend money on the squad before lyon fc look pathetic !Posted from

John, Sidi Keita is talking with Murcie, a spanish club.
And I REALLLLY don’t want him. He really cannot play in a team like OL.Posted from
