Valencia Throw in Morientes for Kallstrom while Lyon Eye Reyes
By: Inara | July 23rd, 2007
I have a sneaking suspicion that Valencia coach Quique Sánchez Flores read my testimonial to Kim Kallstrom because I think of no other explanation for Valencia’s sudden and excessively heavy interest in him.
Unable to sign Lucho Gonzales from Porto and Wesley Sneijder from Ajax, they are seriously considering Kallstrom as a good alternative – and worse, they aren’t even denying it! In fact, they are fanning the fires by saying things like “Kallstrom is more of an organizer than Lucho and suited to Valencia’s playing philosophy.”
They really really want Kallstrom, who doesn’t command the same fees as Lucho and Sneijder and also fits within their salary structure. Lyon have already rejected a €12m bid, and since everyone knows how desperate Lyon are for a striker, Valencia may throw in unwanted Fernando Morientes into the deal.
I feel very conflicted about this. Lyon have lost so many players – particularly midfielders – this summer. With Tiago, Malouda, and now Diarra gone, Lyon’s attacking midfield is super light and will need reinforcements for sure. And we’ve recently been starting to see how much Kallstrom has to offer on the pitch. He’s a player with a bright future, and I think Lyon would be foolish to let go of him.

Would Morientes trade the Mestalla for the Gerland?
But it is a good move for Kallstrom, which is what’s scaring me. Valencia would offer Kallstrom more in terms of a sporting prospect and perhaps a slight wage increase with the benefit of lower taxation. He may not be guaranteed a starting spot there, but he doesn’t really have one at Lyon either. And unlike Lyon, Valencia have been CL finalists. In fact, if I were Kallstrom, I’d be very tempted.
About Morientes – he’s experienced, seasoned, and has prior experience in L1 (he spent a year on loan at Monaco). And as Jo pointed out, his 31 years of age aren’t as much of a handicap when you consider that it would give Karim Benzema more playing time. The problem is, Morientes wasn’t that great in L1 – he scored only ten goals (though he really shined in the CL, which is probably what Aulas is interested in).
But the most troubling part is that Lyon didn’t even fight Valencia off. This attitude is really troubling and is showing a lack of ambition in their recruitment policies. I don’t mind having Morientes but not at the expense of Kallstrom. So let’s hope that Morientes does what most foreign players do – turn down Lyon (I can’t believe I’m saying that, but I like Kallstrom too much).
In even more bad news, Lyon have been checking out Jose Antonio Reyes of ArsenalReal Madrid. Is Aulas that desperate to bring in a “name” that he will choose one like Reyes?
I’m not bashing Reyes here, as I think he was a good player, but he’s even moodier than Fred! I seriously doubt Lyon have what it takes to keep him happy. In fact, Lyon’s weather might not suit him. And despite the city being the gastroeconomic capital of the world, he might not like the food either.
Jean-mimi, it’s too risky! Lyon can’t afford any more locker room shenanigans.
If I close my eyes, I can almost pretend the Jerome Rothen and Guirane N’Daw rumors aren’t real but a figment of my imagination.

Lyon has managed to get absolute top money for their players in the recent years, and I´d imagine if they didn´t like the idea of Moro they´d hold out for big money with Kallstrom aswell. However, 12 Million Euro AND an experienced striker? That might be a good enough deal.

Joep: I’m not worried about the price, as I trust Aulas to do a good job, but the club isn’t even posturing. It’s like Lyon put a huge for sale sign in their front yard, letting the world know that it’s okay to poach players from them.
Corey: Agreed. It’s important that Aulas makes a stand. It also sends a bad impression to the players – they think they can leave whenever they feel like it.Salieri: Well, transfer rumors are just that – rumors. But it’s all over Spanish media, and it has to have some substance to it. Anyway, I don’t trust Lyon – they deny things that have already happened.

Quique Sanchez Flores wants Kallstrom, the words came out of his mouth, and he is an idiot because he has a shit load of players in the squad and they will never challenge Real and Barca effectively with a rotation system. Kallstrom beware.

I don’t want Kallstrom to go, and I really don’t think Aulas wants to let him go.Also, Kallstrom is very professionnal and he will not go to the Clash. I think he is happy in France and I can’t see him leave Lyon for Valencia.
Have you ever heard Kallstrom complain? He is simply a nice player, and exactly the kind of person Lyon need.
Aulas is not a fool. He knows he needs Kallstrom, otherwise he will need to buy another midfielder which will probably won’t be as good as Kallstrom. Also, he knows that in 2 years time, clubs like Chelsea, Real and Barca will offer 24 millions for him, so it wouldn’t be a clever move now. And when it comes to money, Aulas is the bill gates of football.I actually think Kallstrom will end up his career in Lyon a bit like Juninho.

I am not sure that Lyon really wants Morientos, he is 32 years old and the want a FW youg who plays all the last year and not a sub.
Willian (Sao Polo) is going to sign for Lyon like Rothen (Paris)Posted from

I have just read an article from a Brazilian newspaper that seems to confirm that Willian is coming to make up for the money that Corinthians never paid Lyon for the whole Nilmar mess. I think OL agrees to pay back 15% of the transfer (or the profit) they make when they sell Willian.
I am not fluent in Portuguese, so if anyone is, below is the link

Damnit, Willian sucks. But keeping Kallstrom is a definite must.

Inara, Shazback has raised an interesting question about Lyon’s youth system and reserve squad that i was hoping you could look into and maybe post on. its in the lyon beats river post, and I am not entirely sure how France’s reserves and youth structure is compared to say england or spain. thanks.

Morientes has stated that he wants to see out his contract at Valencia, though he is flattered at Lyon’s interest. This is like the third time that Lyon have tried to sign Morientes. Valencia seems to have dropped the Lucho track, which means they are willing to raise the bid for Kallstrom.
How does Willian play for corinthians? I heard he was good.

The club website have just announced an offered extension of Kallstrom’s contract (doesn’t say for how long), plus a few comments about the importance of Kallstrom to Lyon. I guess this is a good thing (obviously it is if it keeps Kallstrom), but the downside is that it probably means he’s weighing his options? Let’s hope not.
The same article also that they are officially in negotiation re Reyes but are expecting strong competition from several other Spanish clubs.

Kallstrom has only been at Lyon for one year. OTher than Diarra, the other departures were around for a while longer. I would like to think Kallstrom would stay at Lyon until forever, but he might be tempted with a big money move (because we know that will happen) after Euro 2008.
Aulas needs to stay firm because Lyon didn’t plan for Kallstrom’s departure. They knew in advance about Tiago, Malouda, and Abidal. If Kallstrom were to leave, we wouldn’t just be light in the midfield department. We’d be butt naked.
