Lyon manages one goal in France’s drought
By: Inara | April 16th, 2007As I predicted, yesterday’s score sheet was a drab 1-0. But it’s a win, so I’m happy.
Unfortunately, Toulouse won their match on Saturday, so Lyon has to win against Rennes on Wednesday to formally clinch the title. It’s okay, because it’s still a home match, and given the defensive injuries Rennes has at the moment, I think Lyon can manage a victory.

Nadir Belhadj and Hatem Ben Arfa
About the game itself: due to injuries, suspensions, and temperamental players, Lyon’s attacking lineup was different than normal. Wiltord was centre forward, Malouda on the left, and Hatem Ben Arfa on the right. Yes, you read that right. Ben Arfa. I was so happy at seeing him start that I almost forgave Ged for the gazillions of things he’s pissed me off about.
The first half of the game was pretty stressful as Sedan surprisingly dominated the match, once forcing Coupet to make a world class save. Wiltord, Juninho, Ben Arfa, Toulalan, and Kallstrom missed some good chances to put Lyon ahead. Poor finishing yet again. However, right before the first half ended, Ben Arfa rewarded us with a really cool strike (video below). This is Ben Arfa’s first goal in the Championnat, and considering the fact that he hasn’t played for Lyon’s first team since early February, it was very special for him.
Lyon dominated the second half, but nothing happened in it except more instances of poor finishing. Tiago came closest to making it 2-0, but his lob hit the crossbar.
Overall, I was impressed with Ben Arfa. Anytime I see him play, it’s always exciting, and he’s very fast, often outrunning those around him. Unfortunately, he’s poor at ball possession and gave it away on several occasions. It’s something that he still needs to work on. Also, there were still traces of the selfish play he’s been accused of in the past, but there’s definitely an overall improvement. I simply can’t wait to see him get even better!
Here is a video of Ben Arfa’s goal, probably the best one out of the measly eight scored this weekend in France.
The other interesting thing about yesterday’s game was Nadir Belhadj’s premiere at the Gerland. He started on the bench, probably to respect the fact that he’s technically a Lyon player. But there were some signs being waved around the pitch welcoming him. With about 20 minutes left to play, Belhadj was subbed into the game - and he received an ovation from the crowd! That was nice of them, and he certainly rewarded the Lyon faithful with a good display (albeit for Sedan). He was busy running back and forth, taking his offensive and defensive duties seriously. He even took down Juninho in the 18-yard box! Though there were some appeals for a penalty, everyone was very good natured. Belhadj even joked about it in his interview after the match.
By the time the game was over, I was saying, “Abidal who?”
For the results of Ligue 1’s other weekend fixtures, Sam has more on the France Offside.
Off topic but not really: Am I the only one who thinks that Juninho has been looking like a ragamuffin recently? He hasn’t been shaving, his eyes seem bloodshot…and his hair!!!!
Is he trying to grow out a mane like Coupet? If that’s the case, someone should tell Juni that the surfer boy look won’t look as good on him. And once his head is a little lighter, he might have an easier time with those free kicks.

I am so happy for Ben Arfa. The goal (it had me with a bit of a surprise; a right-footed volley!) just shows he has grown up and I think it’s about time he starts delivering goods.
Bettiol too showed promise. I really appreciated his enthusiasm.

Ja, he’s a real good young buck. Otherwise, I still can’t get over the six 0-0 draws.

Isn’t it funny how we just discussed how Ben Arfa needed to start more games, and there he goes and scores his first goal. He has more to learn but he looks incredible, some talnet. Bettiol looked great to, not as technically gifted as Ben Arfa but he gives his all and I could see him getting 10-15 goals a season in the next year or two. Then again, Benzema should be getting 30 if his thigh stops tearing and Houillier plays them more often. Ben Arfa may be the best solution to Malouda leaving this summer, or Govou’s party boy antics, cause he will play on either side. No Remy? Oh well, 2 out of 3 aint bad Gerarad.

Allez Lyonnais: I really hope he doesn’t leave this summer. When I saw him at the U-18s, I remember thinking at the time that he was more promising than Benzema and Nasri. He has so much potential, and I want him to be Lyonnais. As for Bettiol, now that the season is winding down, I hope Houllier plays him more often.
Sam: All the scoreless draws were so embarrassing for French footballers. It basically confirmed everyone’s belief that our beloved league is crap. Which is so not true. But it’s hard to prove otherwise right now.
Corey: Lyon is so fortunate that they so many talented youngsters coming up through the ranks. It’s getting to the point where the academy graduates will soon be serious threats to players purchased from outside. And the cool thing about having players who grew up playing together is that they’ll have that same chemistry on the pitch. So I would love to see a game where Benzema, Bettiol, Ben Arfa, Clerc, and Remy are on the pitch at the same time - just for emotional reasons, mind you, but still, that would be really cool! Why pilfer Ligue 1 when you can pilfer your own academy?

I completely agree Inara. Transfer fee’s are becoming overly inflated, mainly because Auluas wont sell his players for less then 30 mill, and that means other Ligue 1 teams want to get as much as they can out of them. The only problem area’s of the academy are right down the middle. Now central/defensive midfielders or centre backs coming up into the first team. That is ok though because you cant have a team comprissed completely of youth team players, a few buys is tolerable, especially if they are quality youth players from other teams. Look at Lens’ academy, they are hemoraging talent right now and they are all going to the EPL (think Taarabat).

Corey: I don’t think Ben Arfa will leave, especially with Malouda looking more likely to go abroad. I think that Lyon’s youth setup is pretty good, but the problem is that some of them are so talented that they might not feel the need to stay at Lyon. So far that hasn’t turned out to be the case, with Clerc, Benzema, and Ben Arfa staying loyal. But that depends on what happens this summer too. If Lyon buys another attacker, benzema might change his mind.

If another striker is bought, then one has to leave, and I think we both agree that we dont want to loss Benzema. Baros, I dont rate him, but he will probably be around. Fred may very well leave because he is really having problems with Houllier as is Diarra. They are two great players, and if they leave we will be forced to buy a striker and a defensive midfielder again!!! Its a constant cycle it seems, and this summer is gonna be full of upheavel because I cant guarentee any one player will stay with Lyon. Something is not right in the dressing room and it is not looking good.
