Toulalan…WTF???

By: Inara | November 2nd, 2008

I know I can be annoying with my constant idolization of Jeremy Toulalan, but this time he’s actually done something that has me so horrified and terrified that I had to make a new category just for this post.

Recently, the club had a photo shoot for their 2009 calendar, which naturally features the players. I foolishly thought it’d be something like the Dolce & Gabbana photos for AC Milan. But it turns out that whoever is in charge of creative marketing at Lyon has a very different idea on appealing to the masses.

I’ve seen some previews, and some of the pics look interesting. There is one of Francois Clerc gambling, another of John Mensah posing as a gladiator (he really should have been posing as a hospital patient), and one of Hugo Lloris on top of several cars. But I don’t get the idea behind Toulalan’s. In fact, I don’t even have the words to describe it, so you can see for yourself instead:

A FARMER? Seriously?

And not even a hot farmer! Is “Little House on the Prairie” the best Lyon could come up with? Surely a player like him deserves a scenario a bit more fitting, something that even a person as uncreative as myself can see. God, I don’t know whether to laugh or die in embarrassment.

And to top off the WTFness, in the final third of the video, they do a “portrait” of Toulalan, where they ask him several questions. I’m not at all surprised by the answers, he’s pretty easy to predict (read: he’s a total dork, but a lovable one nonetheless).

Translations (kindly provided by Jo):

- If you were a Stuff ?
- A ball

- A season ?
- Summer, because it’s cool… Making barbecues… cool !

- A dish ?
- Pasta. Because I eat some a lot… and every time.

- An Animal ?
- A dog, a labrador. I like these dogs, they are nice.

- A song ?
- That would a be an old style ! Which ?.. Let’s say Michel Sardou “Rouge”

- A color ?
- Blue because that reminds me the sea

- A noise ?
- The sounds of birds.

- You’re favorite word ?
- When do we eat ??? (laugh) No I don’t know

- Your favorite swear word ?
- “Fais chier” (”that sucks”)

- If tomorrow you could invite to dinner 2 persons on this earth, dead or alive, star or not ?
- My mum and dad. I would also say Fabrice Briand and my godfather

Towards the end of the video, the OLTV staff are speechless as to Toulalan’s taste in music. In case you are curious, here is his favorite song:

Oh Toule, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but maybe you should borrow one of Karim Benzema’s Rohff CDs. Or better yet, just lie the next time someone asks you about your musical choices.

For a guy that’s such a badass on the field, I’m not quite sure what to say about his off pitch personality, but I think we can all agree that he needs a makeover ASAP. And maybe a new publicist as well.

Totally unrelated, but I just downloaded yesterday’s game, and once I watch it, hopefully I will have some of my own comments to share.

what do you want from Toule? He’s not a flashy guy trying to impress people with his coolness. The farmer pics are very him in a way, down to earth, salt of the earth…a real person.

    But his taste in music…omg.

football PR is priceless. in toronto we have a weekly blog on the Toronto FC website by midfielder Rohan Ricketts that is one of the funniest things in the world. the best was his season wrap-up, when he talked about his high and low points of the season. his worst moment was attending a blue jays baseball game, talking about how boring it was, so slow and completely alien to him. classic.

Jo, please, keep posting your reviews of the live games and references to local things in lyon (don’t throw yourself in the saone though, that’s disgusting) – they take me back to my vacation there last year.

were you at gerland for Lyon 3-0 Lens last september? that was a classic, with comical refereeing decisions (baros getting absolutely clattered in the box and no penalty, plenty of poor offside calls), and santos getting a yellow for taking off his shirt when he scored. and of course, benzema’s backheel panna (search for it on youtube, it’s there) that had lens defenders falling over themselves before he sauntered in and rifled a shot home. it was magic.

what amazed me was that i was able to get tickets. i arrived a week before the match and went straight to the stade from St. Exupery, walked up to the ticket booth and got 4 seats together at field level, near the corner. the price of tickets was almost identical to those at BMO field for MLS games here. when you consider the VAST difference in quality of play, not to mention the fact that Toronto FC is completely sold out from the moment tickets go on sale, god i wish i lived in lyon. i’ll repeat my plea for job openings in europe. especially if my neighbours to the south elect the wrong guy again, tomorrow… eek.

lyon want to sign Matias Delgado, another offensive midfielder but an exciting one can you imagine the flowing football we could produce with Ederson,Juninho and Delgado in the same team we would be like Arsenal or Zenit Saint Petersburg.

    Thank you Will.
Yes, of course I was at Gerland for Lyon 3 – 0 Lens last year… just because I go to every game at Gerland, and hum… Okay, I’m a Lens fan since… ever.
All my family live there, that’s a duty to me :)
But I live in Lyon so… you’ll understand I also support OL.
By the way I am watching the crucial Strasbourg / Lens game right now and Lens play with 10 guys since the 30th because of a referee mistake.
So… like Lyon last year, Lens sometimes suffers from these problems of Refereeing :)

But sorry for the Off Topic.

lefutur: It’s not that I mind his totally down to earth, uncomplicated personality (actually, I love it), but I don’t understand why Lyon marketing picked it. If Toulalan had, I would have been like, okay, that’s him, but surely OL stylists could have done something more exciting.

Jean Pierre: Apparently he eats the most on the team, both for Lyon and Les Bleus.

Jo: Nothing is ever off topic here! And yes, please please keep posting your post-game reactions, I also look forward to them.

In my continuing adventures of being a foreign fan, I decided to buy the new OL calendar, and since the official Lyon store offers international shipping, I thought, why not? But despite 10 attempts at registering, it’s not letting me create an account at OL Boutique. I’m not sure if the site is being weird or if it’s secretly discriminating me because I’m from the US. I have my suspicions though. I’ve sent several complaints to their customer service, so we’ll see what happens.

Ronan: No more midfeilders thank you. Unless their names are Essien, Ribery or Gourcuff. Let me know when you find info on a left back or center back; even a striker, which Lyon should start looking for since both Fred and Benzema will be gone this year.

John-Trouble is who do you replace Benzema with ? Someone pretty special and expensive, and most probably wouldnt consider joining Lyon,Fred is pretty simple to replace, and yes we are in desperate need for a Quality CB because im not convinced by Mensah and certainly not by Boumsong, plus Cris is getting any younger at the age of 31,and the left back goes with out saying-maybe Bastos of Lille ?

Ronan: Benz is irreplaceable. You are right: no striker worth anything will come to L1. The best we can do is buy young talent from withing L1 or other smaller leagues. I love Hourau, but I’m sure the EPL is already calling. The defensive line is a shambles: Cris will never recover his old form, Boumsong is a back-up, I doubt Bodmer will develop into a top-flight back, and Mensah will continue sustaining cronic injuries and won’t be able to establish himself with any consistency. I like Bastos, and I also like Mathieu, although I’ve only seen him play a couple of times. We also need to recruit players who can play more than one postion on defense e.g., sideback and centerback or both sideback positions like Reveillere.
